You don't have to like her as an artist (to each their own), but you cannot deny the hard work she put into her career. I read she went to Nashville at age 14 to get a record deal. Think of what you were doing at age 14. Probably not thinking about your career and future like that. She definitely earned everything she has.

And how do you think she was able to move to Nashville at that age? Her family is mega rich, so rich that her dad went on to purchase considerable shares in her record label. There are much harder workers in the industry who’ve had to start off on the ground floor, rather than her, who started off in the executive suite.

Bruh all she did was re-sing old albums this year just so she could own the full rights to them...

Why is she the artist of the year...

Coming from a Swiftie btw.

That’s a lie. She also released Midnights which was an enormous hit and cleaned up awards in 2023 for it like crazy as well as putting on the most lucrative tour in history. Not to mention giving out millions to the roadies as surprise bonuses and a crapton of philanthropy this year.

let me guess, you only listened to her most popular songs, right?
No, actually. Once you look past the empty signifiers and mixed metaphors in even her more lauded songs like All Too Well or the hollow literary references in songs like Cardigan, which are all dressed up to sound more profound than they actually are, you come to realize that her lyricism is mostly artifice designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Her only skill has been finding a way to market herself as so generically beige that practically anyone can see themselves in her. She’s a glorified Hallmark card. Or, more poignantly, a Hallmark movie.

As lyricists, her peers (eg Billie Eilish, SZA, even Ed Sheeran really) all run laps around her, but they’re not so calculatedly palatable so they lack her mass appeal.

A really good song of hers is "The Last Great American Dynasty"
I tried giving that whole album a listen because I was feeling charitable but had to turn it off when I hit that one. The way she says “gauche” is so, well…gauche. There’s barely even a song there.

Yeah there’s nothing commercially palatable about Ed Sheeran and Billie Eilish with their most recent work. 🙄 Good grief.

Even the Simpson's Comic Book Guy thinks that was pretentious.

Yeah, commerically successful artists are always panned. It's like only destitute indie artists are allowed to be considered good.

How was anything I said “pretentious”

I don’t like Swift’s music. I explained why. If you don’t like or agree with my justification that’s fine but there was nothing smug about anything I said.

Taylor Swift - the most overrated artist to ever exist. Still I got to applaud her for being such a big artist while having below average singing and dancing skills.

The criteria: A top pop star that brings in a lot of money and gets a lot of air time and doesn't come with much controversy.

A form of popularity contest. Just like the Grammy, Oscars, Emmys.

Singing is average. Dancing is below average. Lyric writing is average for pop music. Entertainer skills are above average. Business sense (coming from a family of rich bankers) is off the charts.
