Taylor Swift is an average pop star with incredible business sensibilities. She will probably end up with 5-10 billion worth. Everything about her music is bland and average but she has slowly and successfully followed a path toward absolute business dominance. And good for her. She has a few fun songs and most pop is trash so it’s not like she is dragging the aesthetic culture down.

You don't have to like her as an artist (to each their own), but you cannot deny the hard work she put into her career. I read she went to Nashville at age 14 to get a record deal. Think of what you were doing at age 14. Probably not thinking about your career and future like that. She definitely earned everything she has.
This kind of hero worship is so weird. Every single kid playing sports, every kid practicing an instrument, every single kid trying to get As were all thinking about their future and hoping it all worked out for them. 14 is a pretty normal age to be working on your future.

More like product of the year. Seriously. One look at her songwriting credits, and the illusion that she's an artist melts like snow in a volcano. Woman is basically Pepsi at this point. Or Visa, if you prefer that, since she's always on TV, selling credit cards lol.

As a KC hater, I have to wonder why she is dating that frat boy Kelce.
Cynical me says it’s a fake romance and is pure cross promotion. The NFL trying to reach more women, Taylor trying to reach more men. Kelce also suddenly appearing on ads at the same time…classic advertising blitz.

Not really a Chiefs fan or Taylor fan but hard to hate on the success of either. Kelce is legit fantastic frat boy or not😂

That’s a lie. She also released Midnights which was an enormous hit and cleaned up awards in 2023 for it like crazy as well as putting on the most lucrative tour in history. Not to mention giving out millions to the roadies as surprise bonuses and a crapton of philanthropy this year.
Midnight is 2022.

And how do you think she was able to move to Nashville at that age? Her family is mega rich, so rich that her dad went on to purchase considerable shares in her record label. There are much harder workers in the industry who’ve had to start off on the ground floor, rather than her, who started off in the executive suite.

How does her family's supposed wealth negate her own hard work? She still had the desire to move to Nashville, performed in clubs and did the work.

People seem to resent her opportunities. They don't work hard enough, and resent anyone who does.

I'm not a fan of hers, but I find the amount of hatred towards her hilarious. I really don't get it.

As if no one on here understands, as a whole, they’re just as annoying and fan girlish over tech as “little girls” who do the same for Taylor. But feel the need to differentiate themselves from anything mainstream out what seems to be a need to be perceived as “alternative.”

Honestly a great analogy: Being a long time Taylor fan was like being an Apple fan in 2000. Those who were there understand the meteoric rise and the feat of accomplishment that was Apple regaining status as the best/most loved tech company, with best products and highest customer satisfaction. They don’t always have the best specs (doesn’t dance, can’t sing), but the entire product is designed, optimized and just works for what people wanted, even when they hadn’t known what that was. And no matter what they do, everyone will have an opinion or something casually cruel to say that minimizes the hard work that they could NEVER do themselves.

As someone who has always seen the value of what Apple, and Taylor provide - I love to see that reflected in the world as a popular product that people love out loud.

Yes she got a development deal with Sony at 14, wrote ~50+ songs many of which were on her debut album that she released at 16, and written as early as 12.

People don’t understand her popularity today is because of her roots in the tradition of writing country music, and her ability to take that and translate it to Pop music. That’s not easy or something everyone does/can do.

People relate, whether or not you do personally. To say she of all people doesn’t deserve to win an Apple Music award this year of all years, a fake award specifically designed to promote apple’s streaming service, seems daft to me.

My one note is her songs can be very self-referential that many find it hard to relate (but many times more DO relate) - but I bet there’s more than one deep cut somewhere in her discography that would make them cry.

Swift is going to win quite a few awards for 2023 just for the Eras Tour sending sales of her albums literally through the roof. Even the Beatles' new song Now and Then barely dented Swift's amazing success in 2023.

My problem with this of-the-year award is, there are 53 days (7½ weeks) left in the year. Yes, I'm aware that lots of other entities and people do something similar. It still doesn't seem right to me.

People often miss that music, especially country music, is 80 percent about sh***y exes.

It's sort of like an election that is called with only 60 percent of the vote in. Basically, Apple is saying that even if released today, no one could catch up to her numbers.

A better title should be “businesswoman of the year in musical industry”.
In this case very literally. I think she is almost a lock for Entertainment Weekly's Entertainer of the Year award because of huge success of the Eras Tour and the fact she made history with the movie release of her Eras Tour concert.

His brother on the Eagles seems more grounded - married with children.

If money were talent, she'd be the greatest singer of all time. If talent were money, she'd be working biker bars for $100 a night.

I use Apple Music to play whatever song just wriggled its way into my consciousness. Really dig that I can play almost any piece of recorded music at a whim.

Yesterday, “Ride Captain Ride” came into my head so I played it. Same with “Green Eyed Lady”, “Magic Carpet Ride”, and “Peaches” in different days. Heck, I think it’s time to play “Low Rider” and maybe some Mahavishnu Orchestra now. :)
Dude, your age is showing! Fire up a doobie and listen to Captain Beyond's "Sufficiently Breathless!" It'll take you back, way back!

And if jealousy were money, you'd be the richest person in the world. She has tremendous talent. You don't have to like her music, but to deny she is talented is just petty.

I'm not a huge fan of a lot of acts, but I still recognize their talent and don't disrespect them.

Yeah there’s nothing commercially palatable about Ed Sheeran and Billie Eilish with their most recent work. 🙄 Good grief.
I don’t believe that’s what I said, but thank you for the straw man. I guess Christmas came early this year.

The poster is saying commercial success is not a reason to trash an artist or disrespect their music.

Because there are hundreds if not thousands of children with several times the amount talent someone like swift had whose families don’t have the means to up and move to another city just to support their child’s music career. It’s a lot easier to take risks, to be ambitious, and to succeed early, when your parents’ pockets are so deep that one can safely take leaps with the knowledge a net will always appear below them. And this is to say nothing of the educational opportunities afforded to people of her economic class.

Swift is not the hardest worker, but her PR team certainly does seem to be putting in overtime — some of them appear to be doing pro bono work in this very thread
