Not sure exactly where -- just a parking garage in Boston somewhere. Also said the woman from the Acura dealership indicated they're planning to ship in June or July. Seems a little ballsy to leave that thing in a garage.

Nah, the NSX will blend into the sea of luxury cars around here. Pretty much every exotic short of a 918/Enzo/P1/Veyron/etc are dime a dozen.

The amount of McLarens I see on a regular basis is shocking

Very true. I've seen more McLarens on Comm Ave than anywhere else in the world. Quite a number of Maserati Gran Sports around here too, though not exactly in the same level of prestige.

Can a major dealership sell you a brand new car with an active recall? Thank you

Here in Ontario, a dealer or any private-seller can legally sell a car with a recall. With a new car, I highly doubt dealers would be negligent and would try to hide a recall - it wouldn't be in their interest to lie. At the very least, they would inform you and/or provide you with a plan to have the recall fixed if it's not deemed to be an immediate or serious recall.

Depends on the extent of the recall. If it is a Takata airbag car, then probably not.

BMW has put a stop sale on all E70 X5s. Dealers can't sell them or even take them in as trade-ins. It's done wonders to my resale :(

From what I have read, the dealer can take them on trade, they just would not be able to sell the car(s) and they would be stacked up like cordwood at dealers. So I think the dealers are just choosing not to take them as trades. There is a LONG thread over on Bimmerfest forums on this. Really sucks if you have a model on this list as you do.

Here is the thread. Lots of good info in there that may help you.

Is this true? Dealers in the States must have a few brand new E90 3-Series remaining and probably still sell them. I know dealers here in Toronto are still selling new and used E90 3-Series, and all are pretty much are affected by the airbag issue.

Here is the list from that Bimmerfest thread I linked. BMW has issued a stop sale order on every BMW on the list. I'd be surprised if anybody had a new E90 left though since the F30 replaced it over four years ago now.

The thread is mostly discussing BMW/NA, so I don't know what they are doing in Canada.

Affected BMW Models
  • E82 1 Series Coupe incl M - 2008 - 2013
  • E88 1 Series Convertible - 2008 - 2013
  • E90 3 Series Sedan incl M - 2006 - 2011
  • E91 3 Series Sport wagon - 2006 - 2012
  • E92 3 Series Coupe incl M - 2007 - 2013
  • E93 3 Series Convertible, incl M - 2017 - 2013
  • E84 X1 - 2013 - 2015
  • E83 X3 - 2007 - 2010
  • E70 X5 incl M - 2007 - 2013
  • E70 X5 Diesel - 2008 - 2013
  • E71 X6 incl M - 2018 - 2014
  • E72 X6 ActiveHybrid - 2010 - 2011

Thanks! I asked the car sales person about the recall and he told me that they would not sell a car with an active recall.

I think I'm going to get into a new SUV/family ride sooner than I expected.

The 4Runner just is not holding up, to be honest, I'm a bit disappointed, and this is even one with a build out of Japan. Going to lease this time around, since the car stays stock (vs. my ride), and I like to have a warranty/no-surprise family car, it makes more sense (we're also low on miles since our operational range is about 12 miles). So even with my comments about the Toyota, I'd still, maybe consider another one. We're currently thinking along these lines:

- Toyota 4Runner, maybe the TRD Sport variant
- Jeep, which of course means a Wrangler, probably the Unlimited (i.e., 4-door), Sahara
- Ford Explorer, with this option, I'd only consider the Sport model, 365HP TT would be fun, it's nicely finished, and we'd have matching features/functions/electronics

In case it wasn't clear from my selection, we want mid-to-full sized, with AWD, lots of convenience features, combined with something fun. Probably no Euro options either, cost, usage, dealers (see below).

The other thing is those brands all have decent dealers within 5-7 miles, that's important, I don't want to deal with service that's a 45 minute trip into Jax (which I like to avoid in general ...)

My wife kind of digs on the Jeep, I mean, they are *fun*, removable top, it really works out here at the beach, super competent off road capabilities, etc.

At least I've been told that dealers for a particular brand love doing recall work since the dealership gets it fully reimbursed and a healthy pay rate for the mechanics doing the work.

My mom's Cadillac Catera went into the dealership for some warranty work a number of years ago, and the dealership ended up keeping it for a week due to there also being a recall. If I remember correctly, it was related to the original "Dexcool" coolant, and involved a pretty extensive amount of work-a new radiator, water pump, headgaskets and of course the various assorted related parts. At the time, the service manager told us that his mechanics would be eating steak for a little while due to all the work on that car :)

BTW, gratuitous photo since it truly is driving season for convertibles

When will the new models
Come out for 2017 for most cars? Isn't August or September ? TIA
Depends on the brand.

Audi already has the 2017 Q7, R8, and A4 out. Hyundai/Kia and Mazda are usually pretty early to swap MYs.

Brands like Toyota/Lexus take much longer. Usually early fall because they like to clear out inventory around July 4th.

Because my loan person was trying to telling me that a new cars will come out in January! I was trying to tell her that 2016 Toyota Camry had been out since about aug or sept of 2015. Oh well. It's no big deal. Thank you !

ETA: Maybe the reason why my loan person thinks that the new cars come out in January because here in Houston is when The auto show takes place in Houston.

It's Ben! Good to finally put a face with a name. Looking sexy in that MG. Where are those wire wheels? You need to get those puppies mounted.

Only problem with the Jeep right now is they are being replaced with the new JL chassis at the end of next year. Word is Toledo is going to build the new one right alongside the old one for a while too. I too am interested in a Wrangler Unlimited, probably Sahara, maybe Rubicon as a potential next car. Right now is good if you can stand shelling out like $40k for a car with halogen headlights, which I personally refuse to do. The JL will have a xenon/LED factory option finally. I typically like to buy at the end of a body style, but halogens on something that expensive is an automatic fail, especially considering how close to sticker you have to pay for a Wrangler.

Your loan officer is an idiot, how can a loan officer of all people who loans on cars all day not know this? And as AutoUnion said, it depends on the manufacturer as far as when new models are released. Ford tends to be early too, the '17 Escapes are en route, and when I bought my Mustang 2013 and 2014 Mustangs were waaay ahead of the calendar year. Other models follow more traditional fall schedules though...but no manufacturer waits until January, lol.

Good info, I wasn't aware of the platform change. I'm kind of just getting back into research mode, when I read your post I did a few searches, yeah, I see the MY18 (debuting in '17) with some nice changes. The old automatic tranny is especially dated, looks like maybe an 8-speed for the new model (that's also a big hit on the 4Runner, I can't believe they released the 5th gen, massive redesign, but still with a 5-speed).

Dang, a new 8-speed, new design, maybe a HP bump, much better lighting. Hahaha, that'd drive me nuts.

Thanks Ari :) . I know my ugly mug detracts from the car.

The wire wheels aren't going to work out for the time being. I actually drove two hours to look at them and had the cash in my pocket but both the hubs and splines were shot. All I really would have gotten out of the deal was a wire wheel rear axle(which is narrower than the disk wheel axle) and a set of knock-offs but honestly didn't feel like hauling the 300lb lump of cast iron and steel home when none of the other parts were usable. It would have cost me another $1K+-for five new wheels and four new hubs.

All four wheels and all three hubs(it was missing one rear one) were worn so badly that I could turn the wheels on the hubs by hand-imagine trying to accelerate or brake with them that loose! I'm hoping the MG show this summer will turn up a usable set.

I know this is heresy, but I have come around to liking the Rostyles. They don't have the class of wires, but there's a lot to be said about the fact tubeless tires are inherently safer. Tubeless radials tend to develop a slow leak absent traumatic damage, while any damage to the integrity of an inner tube will almost always result in a blowout.

I also decided that I was tired of the nice, reliable American made fuel pump and replace it with a British made one :) . Most British cars were fitted with SU fuel pumps from the factory. These are diaphragm type pumps that only run when they can actually physically pump fuel(i.e. when the carb float bowls are less than full). They make a distinctive "tick tick tick" when pumping, but stop when the float bowls are full. By contrast, the Facet branded pump installed(which is specifically sold as an aftermarket replacement for the SU) ticks constantly and just opens a bypass valve when line pressure goes above the fuel line pressure reaches ~3.5psi(which is about the same point where an SU stops pumping).

SU pumps got a bad reputation because most of the original ones ONLY lasted about 30 years. The original design uses a set of points(electrical contacts) to activate the electromagnet that operates the pump. The points get pitted and corroded over time, although the originals can easily be rebuilt. The new one I bought over the counter at NAPA(brand new, made in England, SU branded) is electronic, meaning it uses a rare earth magnet and hall effect sensor in place of points. So, aside from the diaphragms, it should be maintenance free.

Unfortunately, someone butchered the original fuel line plumbing to install the aftermarket pump. The SU fuel pump master(who restores originals) hunted down some fittings that would work for me with my current set-up and sold them to me for a very reasonable price. The nice thing too is that I stuck the still working Facet pump in the trunk(it's not very big) and can pop it in on the side of the road if the SU fails me.

It's been so nice here lately that I haven't even started my Lincoln in a couple of days.
