Since we are talking cars we are considering buying. Here is the first modern car that I've seriously considered purchasing, which is, I think, a brilliantly modernized version of my dream-car, the Alpine A110 (Yeah, I like the old model better of course, but I couldn't possibly afford one of the classic ones. Or at least, not one that didn't need a complete restore, and they are vanishingly rare in NA). I started planning for that possibility as soon as I saw they were going to resurrect the brand and model. Not a small thing, as it is an extremely expensive car (in my world anyway) that would require me to sell both my current machines. Then I found out that, in what will certainly go down as one of the all-time greatest crimes against humanity, they aren't bringing it to the NA market!!! Bastards!!! :(:(:(:(

Just look at that original. And such a legacy in motorsports as well.

Nice balanced review is here. It sounds exactly like what I want out of a new car in every way (expect no stick available, but I could bend on that one in this case).

Also, Captain Slow gives a great review of it on one of the episodes of this season's Grand Tour.

That is a seriously nice-looking car; both the new and the old versions.

So how about that new Tesla Model Y?

I can’t say I’m a big fan of the styling. It’s not far off from what I imagined but I guess I was expecting a little more of an SUV look and less of a BMW 3-Series GT. The third row looks pretty useless, as is the case with many small SUVs, but I’m not sure how it works with that roofline. Pricing seems fairly reasonable, I suppose, I’ve never found quality of Teslas to reflect the price but understand that’s not really what you’re paying for.

It will be interesting to see how this affects Model 3 sales, as well as the other models. If Tesla buyers like it, it may cannibalize Model 3 sales (as well as X and S). With its Fall 2020 release date (and we all know how Tesla’s trackrecord with predictions and production), I see the potential for some problems for Tesla if buyers put off 3/S/X sales and wait for the Y. At the same time, impressions on the internet seem very mixed.

SUV? I thought it was supposed to be a four door hatch. I wonder what it looks like rear-ended or t-boned.

Interesting to read the GT500 allegedly governed to a top Speed of a -180MPH-. I’m sure Ford has logical reasoning behind it, but I am surprised to see it's ‘limited’ , but then again, 180 MPH is far more power than most would ever utilize anyways. And I think the misconception about a car like this, is that it ‘needs to be fast with-out limitations’, when the reality is, I imagine anyone interested in a car like this, probably wants the handling dynamics to be more of a priority, given it already _is_ a fast car regardless of the top speed. There so much more potential to a car like this, than just the top speed.

As you can probably tell from what I own and drive, I care very little about top speed. Unless you routinely track-race or live in a handful of places where you can actually let it all hang loose (I have to admit, were I would fabulously wealthy my dream would be to go and live near the Green Hell), it's basically just a marketing number. For me it's all about the enjoyment of the experience. Plus, it's more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow.

I have rented current (base level) Mustangs a couple of times, and the driving experience was excellent and enjoyable. A nice, sporty feel and a generally lot of fun. There was a time when only the most highly-modified Mustangs had anything that could be called "good" handling. But the new model looks just brilliant out there hanging with the best sports-sedans that Europe has to offer. I agree that it has a LOT to offer besides top speed. I have to admit, however, that I was very disappointed with the interior and trim quality. Then again, it's a great sports-car for the price, so maybe I'm just expecting too much. Also, these were base-level rentals, and I suppose it's possible that Ford makes a special low-end interior for base models. I really wouldn't know.

I can only think of a handful of cars that still have CD players standard. Most companies abandoned them years ago and a few offer them as ridiculously overpriced add-ons that take up your glove box or center console. I don’t think Tesla ever offered a CD player.
Most did not abandon them years ago.

Now I am seeing many brands following this misguided trend. It's the same people making crossovers and SUVs, of course.

Where’s my cassette player? And my 8-track?!

I stopped using CDs in cars almost a decade ago when Alpine came out with their X305S digital media receiver that was ‘Made for iPhone’.

So it looks like the number of CD’s that will be sold this year will be about the same as in 1986. And of course there are about 75 million more people in the US now as well.

Well with the first CD players in cars you could only play CDs and once they began being able to read MP3 and FLAC files, then everything got interesting. However, the limited size of a disc which is about 750 MB, I want to say, had you hit a wall unless you splurged for a multi-disc change capable of reading MP3 files. There was no logical progression from CDs apart from DVD and BluRay and those aren't meant for vehicles. Bluetooth or connecting via a USB cable or outlet/inlet is the current preferred method, but I'm sure we'll see this change in the future.

Most of the cars I bought in the 90s were outfitted with a factory changer with 6 disc sleeves. And I'd carry a small album of assorted music on discs. Sounds so strange nowadays but so normal then.

I own a 14’ GT and have experience with the newer S550 Mustangs, they’re great cars (I’m fond of the 18’ changes), the 5.0 Coyote is a very robust engine and has matured nicely aside from some current issues, and the best thing about the Mustangs, is the customization to your liking, which I had an absolute blast with mine changing the exterior and performance mods’.

One of the areas that you mentioned was the interiors, which they really have improved from what they used to be years ago with the Mustangs. In general, Ford is using higher quality ‘soft touch’ materials v.s. Hard plastic, stitching throughout, etc.

I mentioned this car consideration prior in this thread, but I’m anticipating flying out to the East Coast next week to look at a 2017 GT 350 as a car purchase contender. Which leads me back to the whole ‘Top Speed comment’. To me, a car like the GT500 Or even a GT350 for that matter, you’re not just purchasing just the brand or because it’s ‘a fast car’, you’re purchasing a car for the experience all the way around what makes it unique to the driver, especially a car like the GT350 [i.e the interior, handling dynamics, braking, exhaust notes, exterior appeal, even rarity is a strong consideration].

As for the people complaining about the top speed being ‘limited’ for the GT500, truly don’t have an understanding of what else this car has to offer in its own unique standing and the heritage behind *that* specific model of a car.

There are cars with Blu Ray and even inexpensive ones with DVD.

There were even SACD players for cars, which is usually more interesting.

For passenger entertainment. Not exclusively for playing music.
Isn't music entertainment?

I will look for Blu Ray. I would not buy a car without DVD and digital TV at least.

But I would take a car with SACD and no DVD.
