In the UK they get classified as such, and it stays on the log book of the car. So you can have minior damage like mine had (cat D) or more severe structural damage.
He bought a structural damaged BMW to do up but the chassis was twisted so it was going to cost too much to fix.
He sold it for spares. The Polish guys that bought it said they were going to straighten it out using a couple of walls and a trolley jack.
Scary. To make it worse, they were going to export it to Poland, then bring it back as an import. So a new log book and nobody will know it’s history.
