I think what the S4 shows is that without a role model to copy, Samsung is just another hardware manufacturer. They can't innovate. Just clone and ship.

If you'll see my posts in the other S4 threads, I'm not digging the S4. Hardly at all.

But how can anyone say Samsung isn't innovating? Whether you'll use it personally or not, they are introducing new things. Air Gesture? I mean, gimmicky or not (it is gimmicky) this is one of the first steps toward a gesture-based world.

Eye recognition software getting even better? Have you seen Minority Report? This is where it starts (for better or worse).

This is pushing and shaping the lanscape of technology. And they should be commended for trying, not berated for not making everything immediately useful.

I must have missed all these features when I had the iPhone 5. Could you show me where to get to them in the settings?

Excuse me? the iphone 5 doubled CPU and GPU performance, better battery life, new design,LTE.

the S4 did the same and maintained the design, where is all the rage that it doesn't have a new design so they're not innovating? the S3 had a good design so they kept it,same as Apple, besides the screen and camera, everything else is an incremental update from the S3.

Larger screen, thinner and smaller bezels, with better materials. Sounds like a new design to me.

the iphone 5 did not double the CPU, only GPU.

Yes it did. Look it up. You can also look at iPhone 5 GeekBench results and compare them to the iPhone 4S. Apple also promises twice the CPU performance. The GPU is now also triple-core compared to a dual-core GPU in the 4S.

New design would be like the 3GS to the 4. The S4 still uses plastic, although it does supposedly have polycarbonate on the sides.

Sounds like refinement to me, which is ok. But the design and layout are the same... Which is fine because the S3 design was good, I wish they would move away from plastic though

I think this comparison picture belongs here.

Note the change in screen size, resolution, significantly larger battery size, thinness (no Apple S phone ever got thinner nor offered a larger battery), the addition of an IR blaster, less weight (no Apple S phone ever got lighter), different dimensions (again, no Apple S phone ever was sized differently), new colors, and etc.

Note also the whopping jump up in higher PPI. Not even the iPhone 4S-to-5 improved the PPI count.

Image

That change in ppi is even greater when you factor in the switch from a the pentile matrix in the s3 to the ful rgb matrix in the s4.

you have to keep in mind here, with any phone release from any company, you are dealing with two year contracts in the US for the most part. A lot of people who never had an S3 in the first place will be interested in the S4. Same goes for the iPhone 5S.

Is it really rgb? Thought I read on engadget it was pentile again.

Yes, this is from Engadget: "Samsung's staying the course with the overall design language, though it's expanded the screen size to five inches -- now powered by a Full HD Super AMOLED display with 441 ppi (and yes, it's still PenTile)."

Some are saying pentile and others are saying rgb. The screen with the same specs demoed at ces was rgb and they said they were producing that one in 2013.

I think other sites also claimed it's pentile. My HTC One X is definitely sharper than the S3 screen. I would go for the HTC One if I were to buy a new phone.

This is just laughable. I think what your seeing is one company taking controlled risks (don't like a feature? Turn it off) and another company playing it safe and sticking to what its done since the release of its first phone.

In reality, whether you think Samsung copied Apple with some of their first flagship phones/tablets, in the past two years they have followed their own path. I mean, the Samsung S3/S4 Note I/II looks so much like the iPhone, doesn't it? The fact is Samsung is pushing mobile technology forward (not so much with hardware as we are past that point) with features shows they are doing their own thing.

And here's the best part (again)! If the features don't work for you or are "gimmicky" turn them off. At least Samsung gives you the option to use them or not. I love when companies tell me what features are necessary and what features are not...

Leak from reputable tech news source that Apple is working on a 1080p iPhone screen in 3...2...1...

Of course they are, and when Apple comes out with an iPhone that is 5 inches, has no touch gestures, NFC and wireless charging people will rave about its innovation and how Apple is moving technology forward. If ANYONE else does it, its a gimmick, waste of time, useless, etc.

There are so many new features, it's just insane:

YouTube: video

Exactly. The S4 is quite a bit more than just a larger screen with higher resolution. A way bigger jump in features and specs - and not forgetting software as seen in the video - than any of the 's'-upgrades to iPhone has ever been.

It is a shame that it has to be that way - even in the press to a large extent.

But it is quite typical - just look at the coverage of the panoramic photo options when Apple introduced it as a part of the standard photo app. It was suddenly a big deal even though both 3rd party apps and other phones have had that possibility for more than a year already. Still Apple got all the cred for 'inventing' it...

I hope they keep the polycarbonate plastic. Metal just has too much issues like easily scratch/dent and decolorize/oxidize. If you want metal-look, you'll be hard-press to differentiate faux-metal plastic from metal without touching. It is all in the perception. With plastic you can have curve surfaces rather than sharp edges of metal. Plus you can have glossy finish which some people like (incl. me)

Speaking as the previous owner of a bent iPhone 5 and current owner of a dented MacBook Pro, I agree about the materials. Go polycarbonate or stay with glass...its working fine on my Nexus 4.

This phone is going to be a huge hit. Yes, some of the software is gimmicky. However, some of it is very interesting; once it gets refined, could be great. DOA-what a joke! It will outsell the GS3.

The S4 is gonna be a big seller.
Lots of hardware and software improvements which are innovative and worth trying out.

I was looking at this spec comparison between the S4, iP5, HTC One, BB etc, and the only thing that keeps popping in my head is, Apple is way behind. They are gonna take 2 years to just catch up to what is coming to the market in the next 2 months. No wonder the stock is tanking.
