Here we are...

Taken from my phone so not ideal colours. Brought my regular camera in and took pics on that took but can't upload from here.

Will open and play when I get home tonight... all to look forward to :)

No prizes for guessing where in London I am.

Edit: Yes, I have to get to London Waterloo then out to Surrey. The box is slightly larger than I was expecting but I'll survive. Subdiv had a great idea for a carry case but I think with one of those I'd be even more likely to get mugged :)

Congrats! Hope you enjoy the new Mac Pro;) Mine still need to wait one more month(In the worst case)... I'm just being too bored so I did some researches... Is that 3 More London Riverside? :D

Ha! AJ's day would probably not be complete without someone picking on him...and you're probably right about the Scotch cooler. You're better off putting it back in the plain brown shipping box and writing "Not a Mac Pro" on the outside. Glad you got it! :D

Cheers Subdiv (and also Razer). I was tempted to do exactly this except with the message "nick AJ's instead".

Well, I've only just started it up but one thing has surprised me... I can hear the fan. My rMBP was completely silent. It's not loud by any measure but it's got a bit of whine/chatter to it which I wasn't expecting. I'm sure I could live with it if it's normal... just I'd got it in my head I wouldn't hear anything. How would others describe the fan noise from their nMPs?!

I can hear it if I put my head right over it, but sitting towards the back of my desk I find myself reaching to feel the air to make sure it's really on. The noise from a couple pretty quiet hard drives is way louder. My laptop is also much louder, FWIW (17" MBP)

The last 43 days kind of reminds me of waiting outside Best Buy all night for the Playstation 2, 13+ years ago. We've laughed, cried and argued with perfect strangers; sleep-deprived and bonded by a single obsession. This one cost at least a few thousand more than that old console, however.

Thanks to Scissors for getting the spreadsheet together and everyone's banter for helping pass the time-- and also for helping me to know that refreshing the order status and/or UPS tracking pages multiple times, even just a couple days after ordering, is perfectly normal.

The world looks forward to all you create with this beast. Good luck!

Thanks for that. What ambient noise do you have there? If you out your ear right up to it can you hear anything other than a whoosh of air? Really appreciate this.

When my nMP is not working on anything, I have to hold my ear up to the top of the computer to hear the quiet whirr of the fan. Tonight is the first time I have heard the fan speed up to a more audible whirr...I was doing a Maya Mental Ray render of a human head with hair that I am working on...I'm running iStat menus and could see that all cores were max'd out. (Render time of about 24 minutes.)
I would never describe the sounds I get as a whine or a chatter...you should definitely consult Apple on that...

I'll do a recording of it in a few hours, when it gets quieter here.

I'd appreciate that a lot. On mine, there's a constant high-ish frequency coming from the fan and I can very clearly hear each rotation of it when it's on the desk (the "chatter"). With a bit of background noise or music, it's harder to detect but I can still hear it if I try. If I put the rMBP on the floor it becomes much harder to detect but again I can focus in and hear it still. I can hear the constant whoosh only when I put my ear right up to it.

I am very sensitive to sound, but I've had a hackintosh run quieter than this!

Never had this sort of noise with any of my MacBooks but unfortunately I have in a badly manufactured brushless motor in a PSU which sounded similar.

Will give Apple a call tomorrow but it's not looking good!

----------

My experience matches Subdiv. At most I just hear the airflow, never anything mechanical. At idle I have to really warm my ear to hear anything at all.

Thanks Nugget. If you can hear the airflow only, that concludes it. I can hear the mechanical sound much easier than the airflow.

CBM - no need to do a recording now.

Edit: The fan is rotating at 770rpm and I know 120mm PC case fans made by Noctua etc don't make any noise at all at this speed.

Into the box it goes. Sheesh!

I suggest just using it for now and waiting until the delivery channel clears out before getting a replacement. It won't be any easier or harder to get it serviced/replaced in two months and if you do it today you'll probably end up near the back of the line for the new unit.

SHIPPED!!! First February order!

actually, BarryP's order (albeit from B&H) was delivered on 1/31 and was originally schedule for February delivery.

my "ships February" order from 1/2 has been charged & is preparing to ship.

given that you placed your order on 12/19 @ 5am you must have had one of the very first "ships February" orders.

True, though I'm really only looking at orders through Apple since the third-party ones seem to have little consistency in availability

Well, I can't believe it. At 11:45 Jan 31, my status changed to preparing for shipment. Sure Apple failed to "ship" in Jan, but I guess this counts as them staying true to their word. I wonder how long it will take to get here considering the lady told me all CTO's ship from overseas (even though Apple says they're all built in North America). . .
I feel so relieved. I may sleep for once tonight! :)

I ordered mine from B&H to, they email me an order number and charged my credit card and said it would be drop shipped directly to me. My question is, how can I track this order since I don't have an apple tracking number, just a B&H order number. It would be nice to get some idea when I can expect it.

My local reseller has 6 core stock available to ship today. So tempting but I can't justify paying more money for 256gb SSD instead of 512 (I got edu pricing with Apple which this reseller won't match).

I guess it's Feb now though so the wait won't be much too much longer.

My QC/12/256/D300 nMP now on its way via TNT Express, presently in Houston TX, promised delivery 6 Feb. The actual "Shipped" notice came at 1:45AM CET, so did Apple meet their "Ships January" promise?

I like your photo. These have really made me laugh, and I agree with your comments - having this thread and the spreadsheet has been great for passing the time while we wait for our new machines. :)

Incidentally, my patience may pay off, as today UPS have improved their original delivery estimate for my nMP from Tuesday 4th to Monday 3rd. We'll see...

That's really bad news, Mark. Sorry to hear that. Is it worth seeing if Apple will let you keep that machine until the new one turns up? When I had to return my new rMBP because of a keyboard fault they were keen to make sure that my time without the computer was either very small (i.e. just a day or two) or better still overlapped so the new one turned up before the old one was collected.

Here it is, anyway. These are recorded with a pretty good mic (AKG C414 XLII), through a crappy preamp (in a MOTU 896). There are two files, one from one foot, and one from three feet. They each feature some typing, some mouse scraping and clicking, some trackpad clicking, and end with a few beeps using the alert sound "Glass."

My desk is a little funny in that, about a foot above the top of the Mac Pro, there's a shelf, which tends to reflect sound back to me. I had to move the drives down to a shelf below the Mac Pro because the sound of the drives was annoying. (but they were off for this test)
