Here it is, anyway. These are recorded with a pretty good mic (AKG C414 XLII), through a crappy preamp (in a MOTU 896).

Really appreciate that, cbm. I've attached a recording of mine at about half a foot. I know it's close but I'm not confident that my gear is up to an accurate recording from a distance! The whine is obvious but the chatter is more difficult to hear. What do you think?

Have been on the phone to Apple to arrange a replacement this morning. Pretty disappointed to have to spend more than an hour going through software steps when it's so obviously not a software issue. Will be sent to an engineer to look at.

Almost feel embarrassed to post this with the disappointing news from Scissors - hoping Apple can get his machine sorted out in double quick time.

But anyway, I'll still post this. (Am secretly quiet pleased, of course…):

No need to feel embarrassed at all. I'm still very happy for everyone else!

Apple weren't able to give any comment on the priority of my replacement. I just got the "we've had a lot of orders" line which doesn't inspire confidence. In any event, my replacement order won't start until Apple receives the machine from me on Tuesday. Oh well!

I listened to your recording, but it's difficult to judge the volume without hearing the computer in person. It has the same basic tone that mine does, but I have to put my ear up close to the top of the machine to hear it. It's too bad Apple can't ship a new fan to your nearest Apple Store so they can just swap it out...

Shame on you. If you had an ounce of decency, you would forward the shipment to Scissors immediately...

As yours has the same basic tone, I'm wondering if I'm just being too sensitive about the whole thing. Would be interested to get cbm's view (and anyone else's) on my recording. Sorry to have hijacked this thread to discuss this.

Edit: I was given the option to take to a store for testing but assumed their testing area wouldn't be quiet enough and they'd tell me it was performing normally, which would make it harder to get a replacement. Feels really good to be back on the rMBP again now and hear nothing at all.

Upon further review (and now that my furnace has cycled off) I actually can hear my fan from about 16 inches away. It's very quiet, though. I personally would rather hear it than not, as it lets me rest assured that it's running. :)

My QC/12/256/D300 nMP now on its way via TNT Express, presently in Houston TX, promised delivery 6 Feb. The actual "Shipped" notice came at 1:45AM CET, so did Apple meet their "Ships January" promise?

yes. i think we go by pacific time for all things apple (we did so for the time orders were placed, and the store comes back up on pacific time).

Hello Razer. I'm going to brave the tourists at Covent Garden and Regents Street next week and hold my ear up to the machines they have there. Hope yours get shipped soon!

Anyone heard of any Apple store in the UK with stock apart from demo models?

The two in Bristol appear to have no idea if or when they will ever get any in
stock. They both say 'order online only for March delivery'!

Yours does seem to have some high frequency content that mine does not.

If you get a chance, could you do a new recording that has some normal noises, like mouse / trackpad clicking in it? It would help me gage the amplitude of the fan. At the risk of being completely gear-head, what did you use to record this?

Good morning. Gaming PC meet Mac Pro. Mac Pro meet Gaming PC.

Gaming PC: "Vrrrrrrmmmmm"

Mac Pro: "....................."

I packed up the Mac Pro yesterday ready for shipping back to Apple in Ireland. After cbm suggested I do another recording, I figured why not take it out of its box this morning and do that. So how nice it was to find that the chatter noise and whine are now barely audible. Shifting it in and out of the box has somehow sorted the sound out. I'm going to put the return on hold!

Great photo :) and even better news! Worth nothing for anyone else - if your machine displays any characteristics that you're not at all happy with, threaten to send it back to Apple and shut it away in its dark box for a bit until it sees the errors of its way. ;)

My delivery has now reverted to the original estimate (Tuesday) however it's in the UK - Barking, for some reason (that's the place, not the noise my dogs make when they want me to feed them). I'm still quietly hopeful it'll arrive tomorrow, but if it's Tuesday then I'm sure I can survive another day!

You're tantalisingly close now, either way. You'd have thought UPS would mobilise on Sunday night ready for deliveries on Monday, so there is still hope! In my case, my parcel stayed at Stansted from 4am Thursday to 5.30am Friday, so clearly an early delivery was technically possible, even though it didn't happen.

Great news scissors, i was coming on here to ask if you had removed the case and re-seated it in case it was a little 'off' and could be causing the problem.

Maybe you had a yellow sticky note caught in the fan, and it fell out when you put the computer back in the box...

Hmmm... yes, there were some shreds of yellow paper in the box. One had an "A" on, another had a "J". I just thought these were standard issue...

Thanks Razer! Still so far so good. :)

So I'm still scheduled to receive mine here in NYC tomorrow -- the UPS tracking site shows it as on time for scheduled delivery. However, the site also curiously still shows its location as Mesquite, Texas. It's been there since Thursday. Maybe it stopped for some barbecue.
