Warning: Venting Below!
It's so disheartening to see that people who ordered hours after the nMP went on sale, almost 2 months ago, have not received their nMPs yet.
Apple first promised 2013, then Fall, then December, for mere hours it was January, and then February. We saw in late January that supply had made no progress on meeting demand, and just today, as new orders now ship in April, it suggests that supply/demand projections were probably worse than they originally thought. That photo Tim Cook tweeted in December of Mac Pros flying off the assembly lines was definitely misleading, as are nearly all of their estimates. Whenever I read "late 2013" nMP, I laugh.
Couldn't they have been more transparent and realistic about the process and kept us updated on their internal estimates/figures? What exactly do they have to lose by giving us this information? We already know that supply is not meeting demand and suspect they occasionally run out of certain configuration parts which creates the "lottery" process we have now. This last part gives some people the sense that Apple is letting people "cut in line." Isn't it just plain old good customer service to keep your waiting buyers as informed as possible?
This is not the iPhone, and it's not Apple's most lucrative product category, which is why it is that much more important. This is their most "boutique" item, and their customers are primarily professionals and semi-professionals. This nMP is for businesses that count on the promise from companies that when they say things will be delivered at a certain time, they are done at a certain time.
Sure, there are companies like Blackmagic Design that I absolutely do not trust because of past experiences where they blow past estimates. That Blackmagic Production Camera that was promised (yes, promised) to be released last Fall? I didn't swallow that for a moment, as they have never been within months of meeting any shipping estimates (even as they once promised "within weeks" and it still is on pre-order at B&H!). With that information, rather than waiting, I bought another camera.
But this is Apple. They have higher expectations and they should know it. If I had known that 2013 or Fall really meant February 2014, I think I would have gone ahead and purchased a maxed out iMac long ago.
Right now I am too invested in the waiting game to back out now. Reading this thread has been therapeutic, but why hasn't Apple been trying to connect with waiting buyers (especially those that have seen others "cut in line") and foster greater transparency? The argument that it's not the Apple's bread and butter doesn't make sense. This company, if it were a country, would have a higher GDP than Sweden, Argentina, Poland, Belgium and many other countries. They can afford better customer service.
Even if it doesn't necessarily make the Texans work faster, it at least would create the sense that buyer, seller, and manufacturer are on the same page (especially as the seller and manufacturer are the same). I would understand better every single one of these issues that Apple is having if they were more explicit about them. I have resigned myself to the wait (and need it more than ever now!), but I think they've botched this launch.
