From iBook to MacBook Pro

I started my first year of college in August of 2009. At this time, I hadn't put any thought into getting a laptop for college. A few months in, my grandma suggested that I should save up for one and with this, the Mac or Windows debate began.
At first, I figured I'd get a decent Windows laptop. It's cheap (didn't have a job in August) and I've grown up using Windows. While I was beginning to save some money (got a job in September) my grandma lent me her old iBook G4. That's right, it's September of 2009 and I'm using a computer from December of 2003. The iBook G4 had a blazing fast processor clocked at an amazing 933MHz  couple that with the 640MB (odd, I know) of RAM and I had myself a great main computer to start college with. MS Word and iTunes only took 20-30 seconds to open and you wanna run a flash video... it wasn't happening. However, I was very grateful for the laptop I was given to use temporarily.
The iBook could only run 10.5.X but this was my first extended use of OS X. I used it a little in high school and various other places for limited amounts of time, but this was the first time it was my main OS. Just a few weeks in, I realized that this was a far superior user experience and I just fell in love and I knew my first laptop/computer that I'd buy would be a Mac. I started following the rumors and began waiting for the new MacBook Pro's. The summer 2009 revisions had been out for a few months and some rumors pegged the new Pro's to be released as early as late December or early January. Well as we all know, the MBP's weren't refreshed until mid-April. Every Tuesday from February to April 6th I would eagerly check MacRumors and Apple's website only to be let down. However, the morning of April 13th, there they were, the new MBP's. I spent my entire morning surfing the internet, reading early reviews and stats. (Didn't pay much attention in Chem Lab @ 7:30am ) I was a little hesitant to order as $2100 is a lot for a college student to spend on one purchase. I had to sleep on it. Finally, Wednesday morning I decided to go for it; I ordered my MBP. 15" HR-Glossy screen with the 2.66GHz i7 & 4 GB of RAM. After spending a week tracking it from China to Alaska to Indiana then back to Arizona, it finally arrived on April 21st. It's the fastest and nicest computer I've ever used and should last me some good years. That old iBook G4 got me hooked on OS X and I don't think I can ever go back. So thank you grandma for bringing me over the good side.

TL;DR iBook G4 slow, got me hooked on OS X, now own a MBP. Awesomeness!

Middle right picture: Why yes, that is a watermelon on the desk. Why? I really don't know... It isn't mine.

One more picture.

All photos taken with my iPhone. So they aren't uber 50,000,000 Megapixel quality.

Not to sound rude, but I really dont see the point to this post. Grats on your MBP I guess.

Congrats and welcome to the fam! I started my mac experience with an iBook G3 many years ago. It shipped with os9 and an install disc for osx.

I am now also running a umbp :)

Nice pics by the way.

My conversion to mac story was similar to yours. When i returned from overseas in 2006 I told my wife she could buy any laptop she wanted under a $1000. She ended up picking out a shiny iBook, which really freaked me out because I was such a hardcore windows geek. After only a few hours messing with the iBook i realized I had been missing out and only a couple months later I had pre-ordered one of the first Intel based Macbook Pros for myself.

Haven't looked back and I eagerly await Apple's next innovation in personal computing.

Nice!! Did you go for glossy or matte? I ordered the 15" i5 with Hi-Res glossy but I called Apple and I'm exchanging it and upgrading to the matte. :)

I got the glossy screen, but I'm not sure whether I made the right choice.

It's beautiful but... well.. ugh... i don't know. :-(

Figured, I'd just put an anti-glare film on it. :-D

Congrats OP for your MacBook Pro purchase...I purchased my first MBP on Friday and it's killing having to wait! lol

has anyone else been getting this all day when trying to track their macbook?

So, I ordered a 15" i7 Macbook Pro, my first Mac Ever :D.

I ordered it on the 6th, Sunday, and FedEx estimates it's arrival as the 15th, Tuesday. Although, it's already in my city, at the "At dest sort facility" stage. Is it safe to assume that I'll get it Tomorrow, instead of Tuesday?

Check Fedex tracking tomorrow morning. It will show "Out for delivery" if you will get it tomorrow. Otherwise, the original Tuesday estimate will probably turn out to have been right.

yea, in the UK. it has been showing that error page since saturday's night

I think I'll wait until tomorrow afternoon and then give them a call. My delivery date was the 18th, but I don't want to miss it if it's moved forward a couple of days. I had expected more from apple and their delivery tracking, it's pretty shocking how few details I've had. All I know is that it was shipped on the 7th, no details of where from or where it is now or anything like that.

Just got my new i5 17inch uMBP

Hello all, just got my new i5 17 inch uMBP. Wanted to let people know that I purchased it at BestBuy. They honored my student pricing, and back to school promotional. Regular price was 2299.99 less 200 for student pricing and 199.00 for an ipod touch (they cannot give away a touch, so they just took it off the price).

They did not give me that price up front, I had to talk to a manager. I wasn't a ass about it, I was very polite, and they ended up being very easy to deal with. The price match policy from Bestbuy states they will not match any free promotional items, but they did it anyways. Anyhoo, just thought I'd share my experience.

*Edit*

BTW it runs perfectly. So far played about 10 hours of WoW, used handbrake to get 2 movies on the computer. Fusion/Window 7 runs perfectly. No screen, freezing issues.

I just got one at best buy.... should've done that sneaky price cutting. At least I have even user-damage warranty from best buy

Just to clarify, you got the 17inch MBP and 8GB iPod Touch for $1900? That's fantastic. You did not even have to go through the rebate process. I am really surprised Best Buy honored the Back to School promotion for you. Consider yourself very lucky. Enjoy your new Mac.

Mine just arrived of Friday past after a convuluted delivery. I have been waiting since Feb to get a new laptop and make the switch to apple. Already im in love with it, mostly becuase of the old classic, 'it just works'. Im still in shock that i havent rebooted it and managed to use it for 6 hours on Sunday on the battery. These are well engineered bits of kit!

I'm in the process of purchasing a second hand MPB (2007 model, 2.33Ghz C2D) for my on-the-go work, does anyone have any recommendations what defects to look for when I'm picking it up?

I ordered 17" UMBP today, stock except for 2.66ghz i7. I was going to get anti-glare but then I searched the threads and found out you don't get the glass overlay with anti-glare, so it is like I would be paying more but getting less. And I bet the glass overlay forms part of the structural integrity of the unibody housing, so I would never pay for them to remove it (I am also a clumsy oaf so need all the screen protection I can get).

I separately ordered the 1 terabyte WD hard drive for data, 8gigs of ram, the dual-drive from PowerBookMedic (so I can have 2 hard drives), and the Intel X25-E Extreme SSDSA2SH032G1. So when I'm done setting it up this thing will be a powerhouse.

It would have been even better if I had the money I would have just bought 2 500 gig SSD drives and did a RAID0 but alas I am not Mr MoneyBags over here (I'm already pushing $3k with my current setup). I had ADC select membership so I got a 20% discount on the 17" UMBP and the processor upgrade option.
