I can't believe that person sold their old computer with iwork 09 and office 08, and the mouse and case, but good for you. (unless they didn't want the mouse and case anymore). Put the "old" (but still current version) software on your new shiny toy and you're good to go. :) you lose applecare though, but it will net you more for the machine.

Of course, you have to slick the hard drive and re-install Leopard, or better yet buy another hard drive off newegg and did a fresh install on that. (Given enough time and effort, someone can probably get any data that ever existed on a hard drive off of it.) And at least be fair to them and include the Leopard install disc too. (LOTS of used and older apple computers from 2001+ or so on ebay don't include OS X install discs, but have it pre-installed, disappointing actually)

Many times I wish there was a site for computers like Kelley Blue Book or edmunds.com is for cars. (you put in a bunch of information about the machine you want to buy or sell and it tells you what you can expect to get or pay for it, constantly updated of course)

I lose AppleCare? Why? Apple says you can transfer it if you sell it.
The Orange County Craigslist is full of people selling practically new macs. Not sure what the deal is with that.
I plan to re-install Leopard but the guy has the full Intego suite installed and I am waiting for him to email me the serial number or what ever I need to re-install it on a clean drive. He gave me all the boxes/install disks for everything else though.
Everything was purchased all at once 4/2/09 and the receipt total was nearly $3300 after faculty discounts. I was blown away when I saw that.
I tried twice to buy the same model off CL on the same day but one person decided not to sell and the other one flaked and never called me back, so this guy was the third person I tried to buy off in one day, but he had the best deal so it all worked out.
I will upgrade to an SSD down the road when they cost less than my car :)
I would have never thought that I, Mr. PC, would have ever considered a mac but now that I have it, I will never look back. The Vista partition's days are numbered.

To answer the iPod question first, the iPod Nano, both the 8GB and 16GB models, offer full rebate, $149 for 8GB and $199 for 16GB.

Now, onto the dreadful shipping time of Apple's warehouse in Shanghai. I ordered mine on Tuesday with upgraded HD and iWork pre-installed. It started on it's way yesterday, but I guess FedEx doesn't fly on Sunday's so almost a week after the initial order promising 1-3 business days (Wed-Fri) it's still sitting somewhere in Shanghai. Needless to say I'm a bit irked. But since you ordered it on Thursday, I think you'll definitely get it by the 25th, but it probably won't ship from Shanghai until Monday or Tuesday.

About losing AppleCare, I meant, if you sell yours, you lose it. If you buy it, you gain the other person's. Not a big issue tho since it helps resale value a lot!

Sorry about your CL frustrations but seems you won out in the end... Back before OS X I wouldn't have considered a mac either, but when I found out it was based on UNIX, better than OS 9 in every way, etc. I thought i might at some point. lol.

Glad you're lovin it, I can't wait for mine too!

The past four days have been so slow! Waiting over the weekend has been torture... at least I have my last week of summer class that has me busy. Trying to do as much workload as possible to have lots of time to play with my MBP :D.

Mine is still in transit from China (shipped Friday morning). I'm calling Apple for my refund on the 2-3 day shipping if Fedex doesn't change the arrival date from June 18 to June 16 like Apple said tomorrow.

I just ordered the "low end" 15.4" MBP. I upped the hard drive to the 320/7200.

It replaces my 12" iBook G4 800 (my "lucky" mom inherits that one :D ), and also my first generation 20" Intel iMac. I plan to keep the iMac, as it's still a great machine, and will be good to have around for a back up.

The confirmation gives a delivery date range of June 17-23. Since I'm in Alaska, I'm hoping it comes through customs here, which should cut a day or two off the delivery time.

Notice from Apple said ETA June 17, FedEx says June 18, I'm guessing because the package missed the cutoff time. :(

Looks like our laptops will be on the same plane :

Here's to a safe flight!:D

The 13" $1199 model is now at Best Buy. Picked one up today.

They were not listed on the website yet, but my store received four of them today. Display model wasn't out yet either.

That's where I got mine yesterday. They just put them out. I got one of the first ones in the store.

They pushed me hard to purchase their $299 extended warranty with accidental damage. This time I'm not doing it. Whenever I buy stuff like this I treat it like a baby. Hundreds of useless dollars later I still haven't dropped any of my laptops (knock on wood) so no go on the accidental damage insurance. I still might get AppleCare though through an e-bay retailer at a discounted rate.

be careful about ebay applecare. sometimes they open up the box, email you the code, and after you've left glowing feedback, call apple and cancel the applecare. They claim you don't need the box, so they will email you the code, and you can get the software for free through the apple website. no wonder it's so cheap! Ebay applecare is less likely to be a scam if they will mail you the box.

Good deals can be had on amazon (and other websites). Apple authorized resellers should be a good bet. The academic discount on applecare from apple directly is a steal, though. :)

Parent's just made the final decision to get my younger brother a 13" MBP for him to use Dragonforce next year in school (He is learning disabled). Decided to take the plunge with them and get a MBP aswell, but now I need to wait to set a date to go with my brother to the apple store near our house to actually get them. Parent's don't want him getting it before school is out though since it could become a "distraction" ;) and I would feel like crap if I got mine before he did.

I just got a 13 inch MBP, the 2.53 ghz one. This is my first Apple laptop and it seems really great... Just a couple of questions. My screen is the 9C9F--is this considered bad? Everything looks fine to me, but I don't have as discriminating of an eye as a lot of you guys do, I don't think. I want to be sure I have a good monitor. Secondly, is the top quarter/fifth or so of the trackpack supposed to be difficult to press as a button? I can press everywhere else fine, but clicking towards the top is difficult/impossible.

Also, and this is just a very beginner mac question... I just downloaded Skype. Whenever I open it, a little Skype hard-drive looking icon appears on my desktop. Is this normal? Furthermore, the computer always asks me if I'm sure that I want to open a program downloaded from the internet every time I try to open it. I know I can check off the box saying "Don't say this again" or whatever, but is this normal? Thanks!

you need to go watch a guided tour of OSX, because you have no idea how to work some of it.

1. check the display comparison thread. but if you think it looks good who cares? dont even bother checking the thread if you like how it is now.
2. the top third or so of the trackpad is not part of the button. only the bottom pushes down.
3. the file was probably a .dmg, which is like a Windows ISO. the install file is "mounted" on your HD. after installing the program, drag that hard-drive icon into the trash.
4. yes its normal, why wouldnt it be? just click the box.

Ahhh yea those things can be a little confusing at first. The way that macs work is that the application that you downloaded came in a .dmg file probably. I can't remeber what that stands for but I always just call it a disk image. When you double click on it your mac "loads" it and it becomes a new disk (If you have ever used a linux or unix OS before it is the same thing as using the mount command, just so you know Mac OSX is built off of Unix so it shares that same feature).

Anyways when you load the image and that disk appears just double click to open it and drag and drop the folder inside onto your desktop or applications folder or something. You can then go into that folder and double click the executable file to run the program.

The Mac OS doesn't really treat programs the same way that windows treats programs. With Windows it goes through adding it to a registry and a whole bunch of other things. The Mac OS and alot of other Linux and Unix based OSes don't really use registries for programs like that and thus you can just drag and drop a program in.

Oh and about that "This file is possibly unsafe" dialog. You can disable that if you don't need it or want it. Its just a default so that you know when you are opening a downloaded file. Nothing bad will happen if you disable it. You just wont get the warning.

Hope that helps (Oh and if I am wrong about anything I said above just smack me and correct me.)

that is because you are running Skype from a Disc Image. copy skype into your Application Folder or somewhere on the hard drive and delete the image folder after you are done with it - it is asking you to run it because its a security measure with apple :D

haha damn got beaten to it, now i look slack cauz i didnt write much :(!

Mine missed the cutoff time too on the same night. I'm hoping it comes the 17th, but the 18th is more likely. I have waited for 6 months to buy one, so you wouldn't think 4 more days would seem like such an eternity! :)

I ordered my 15" MBP last tuesday, and I have been tracking my shipment. Apple said around the 16th, and the fedex site still says the 18th. However, I live in Columbus,Ohio, and my packege left Memphis TN today at 3 PM. On the map on the FedEx site it says 2 days from memphis to c-bus, yet the estimated delivery is still set for the 18th? Is there any chance it will come early? I never use FedEx, I'm usually a UPS kind of guy ;). What do ya'll think?? Could I se it tomorrow?? Tuesday?? This is my first Mac, and I have been waiting for several months for WWDC so that I could buy one without having to kick myself for not waiting!
