My first mac arrived a fortnight ago (15" base MBP with hi res glossy screen). As soon as it got hot green lines appeared on the screen.

Apple were very good and replaced it. I had to wait again though for the custom build. This mac seems to be ok thought, and very nice it is too.

Where do these hot green lines appear?

Excited!

So I've just ordered a MacBook Pro 13" Ultimate with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD to replace my MacBook Rev A Core Duo!

I've had the whitebook for over five years and while the battery only lasts 30 minutes and the combo drive isn't working, the laptop feels as quick as it did the first day!

I just bought my 3rd Mac ever. I've mostly been a Windows user "because I have to".

Well, I haven't used a Mac since OS 10.4, so I thought I'd give it a whirl again. I bought a 13" Macbook Pro refurb on the cheap at the Apple store. A sales tax holiday and 5% off with Discover card sweetened the deal.

I have some old PPC apps I would like to use and since it comes with Snow Leopard still, I should be able to use them. Not sure I want to dive into Lion if it means I can't run Rosetta.

I think the current Macbook Pro is going to be a sought after model for a while to come. It will be the last one with a built in DVD drive (yes, I still use them and I like to have one available). It will also be the last Macbook able to run Snow Leopard and thus PPC apps.

Anyway, looking forward to exploring the Mac world again.

went to the Apple store last night and got a 2011MBP13i5.

14 days to try it out.

I know its rare and hasn't been seen by many so here is a pic lol :D

I thought I was the only one that did this! I have all my unboxing pics on my phone and my hubby thought I was crazy. LOL! It's been over a month now (purchased July 6) and for me the newness still hasn't really worn off. I LOVE this thing!

I got my first MBP on Wednesday (already have an iMac and and iPad2). I must say, though it has only had 4 days of use, I am absolutely thrilled with it.

One of my biggest concerns before pulling the trigger was all the complaints about heat issues. Maybe I got lucky with mine, but (in general) this thing is great. It is sitting on my bare legs as I type this and is barely (pun intended) warm, and that's only at the very back left-hand corner. To be fair, when running full out on the discrete 6750 graphics, it does get hot, but so does every other notebook. gfxCardStatus is a must if you want to use Chrome or Firefox without the discrete card taking over. We have watched a lot of Netflix in Chrome with the integrated graphics forced - no playback issues, no heat issues, and the fan stays quiet.

Having had (or extensively used) notebooks from IBM (pre-/post Lenovo), HP, Dell, and Fujitsu, I can also say that this is by far the best built machine of the group. The only keyboards that come close are on some of the ThinkPads, but this is still the best feeling keyboard I've ever used. I like it better than my iMac's wireless keyboard.

Finally - with regard to performance - this little fella smokes. Even with the standard rotational drive, I'm very impressed with how much faster it is than the iMac (a mid-2010 with the 3.06GHz i3).

I can't wait until tomorrow when UPS delivers my RAM upgrade!

Some day, maybe in a year or so, I'll look into getting a 256GB SSD from OWC (or whoever is the reigning king of performance at that time). My last Dell had a SSD and it was nice, both from a performance and a safety aspect.

Best wishes to all of you, and thanks for all the excellent posts on this site - many of you contributed to my decision with your thoughtful responses to other people's questions.

Happy computing! :)

just an fyi, you may be able to fix the combo drive by cleaning it with out with a air duster/cleaning it out with a soft thin cloth, wrapping it around a credit card and inserting it into the combo drive when the computer is off.

In case you plan to sell or use it on the side so you may get a little more out of your mac.

Howdy everyone! I've been using PCs for-EVER - felt like it was time to take the plunge into the Mac world to see what's so great about them, how cool they are and how they interoperate with PCs both file/app-wise and over the network. Plus, I needed something for online chats, and FaceTime is used by my family, so I wanted the 13" with the FaceTime "HD" camera for best results, else I probably would have gotten the 13" Air.

So this past weekend I bought a brand-new 13" :apple: MacBook Pro (which came with Lion installed), and I'm very excited with it! It's a thing of beauty, and it runs so smooth I think I could place a new boxed one in front of my mother and she'd be able to get up and running with it!

I've been treading the boards here for the past few weeks and I just wanted to say thanks for this great community--I've picked up some cool tips here and this seems to be the better of the Mac-related forums on the net.

An update on my purchase of a few days ago. Not the most positive experience overall and if you wanna hear some moaning, read on...

It was not "double boxed" as some here have gotten theirs. It arrived in a single plain white box that was pretty much covered in skid marks and banged all over. I'm amazed how much that box was probably handled in just 2 days of shipping. I wouldn't re-use the box to mail it again if I needed to in the future.

The laptop was in nice condition "except for the small dent/impression on the bottom". I was not happy with that, but alas it was a refurb. The aluminum is not as thick or dent resistant as I thought it would be.

For those ordering now, it looks like the refurbs have made the transition to Lion only and iDVD is not included. Yet the Apple store still lists the 13" model as coming with Snow Leopard and iLife 11. Problem was, I wanted the old software! I called Apple and they are sending me the "missing disks".

The last bit of bad news (the worst news) is a possible hardware issue. On the very first boot up of the computer, the screen flickered several times and then the graphics went into vertical grey and white lines and the computer froze up. When I started the computer up again the second time and got past the welcome screen, the mouse eventually froze and thus the computer froze. After those first couple of boots, the computer seemed to be "cured" as I haven't been able to reproduce the problems. I ran the "hardware test" several times and it shows no issues. Real strange. I wonder if Apple is able to tell why this "refurbed" computer was returned in the first place and whether it has had similar problems before.

A single white box is just the way refubs come unfortunately.
I remember the last one I got was pretty much the same as you described.

Does your refurb also have the new F4 Launchpad key?

Single Heterosexual Catholic Male Has Bought the MBP!

Hi guys, I would firstly like to thank everyone who helped me make the decision on my previous forum. I have made my decision and have bought it early due to move-in-day.

I have decided to go with a 15" MBP!

After settling in and meeting my male roommate for the first time, I also compared his notebook with mine. I'm very glad to say that he has bought a 13" Macbook Air, so I will not be the homosexual when people come in our dorm. I got the high-resolution 15" so I will still be seen as the manly one.

I haven't used this machine a lot, I have only used it for some of the freshman activities. I feel that carrying this laptop will be a pain in my back after a while, but will be well worth it for when lectures begin. I did see the comments about taking notes with pen and paper, but come on guys, I bought this 2K machine to be able to show it to my colleagues, not my cats back at home. After going to NJ, I don't know if there are many Catholic girls my parents will approve of, which is a bummer, but I'm here to study! Not meet a potential wife.

I haven't been satisfied with the 15" MBP, I find that my wrists hurt after an hour of use due to the sharp edges, and the speakers aren't really too good on it. So I decided that I'll continue to use my old HP Envy in my dorm and just take my MBP to local gatherings and lectures.

Hopefully my colleagues won't think I'm not normal for having an anti-glare screen with the silver border.

Anyways, thanks again. Best wishes.

I'm disappointed you went with the 15", but I understand not every man is capable of comfortably toting a 17" laptop. I think you should be worried about your roommate, though...

How does owning a 13" MacBook Air make one a homosexual and how does owning a 15" MBP make one "the manly one?"

So if I own both, does that make me confused?

Just ordered the base 13" pro as my university place is now confirmed so I can use the edu store. Will be my first mac and (as I ordered with a printer) will be coming on Wednesday! CAN'T WAIT. I'm in Dublin for a few days though so that should ease the waiting.

Couldn't resist upgrading to a 2011 base MBP fo $1350. I guess I'm going back to rehab for my upgrading problem. :)

Received my refurbed 15" i7 2.66 Quad MBP 2 days ago. Manufactured in April '11.

The 2.66Ghz i7 isn't a quad core, FYI. I don't know if you typed the specs wrong or what, but just a heads up. That was a 2010 high-end model. The 15" quads only come in 2.0, 2.2, and 2.3 Ghz.

There is a rehab for that? finally :)

Does the base MacBook Pro Intel i5 have a slot where you can install another graphics card in addition to the integrated one? Thanks.

Sorry, there is no option to add a dedicated video card. The integrated HD 3000 will have to make do; it's not bad at all; that's what I use most of the time.

Yes, I should have mentioned that. Mine (refurbed) came with the updated Lion keyboard.
