So, I had my first few days with my new 15'' MBP, 2.2 GHZ, small SSD. My previous mac is/was a 2008 pre-unibody model. Of course the new one is faster and stuff, and I'm very happy with it. A few comparisons besides the obvious speed increase:
- screen: Both have hi-res antiglare screens. The new one seems to have a warmer color spectrum and seems to be a little bit brighter. Anyways, not much to win here for apple, the screens have always been great.
- keyboard: The black chiclet thingy is not bad, but is a little louder than the old one. Also the old one had an almost smooth surface that matched the aluminum body, which was kinda nice. Typing is good on both.
- the unibody feels a lot more solid than the old aluminum case. No bending of the screen case, no squeaking when picking it up one handed... nice!
- temperature: Cooling seems better than in the old model. Been playing SC2 for a while. The CPU gets hot of course (80s), also the area between keyboard and screen. But still touchable, while with the old model, I couldn't let my fingers there. The palm rests stayed comfortably cool, the keyboard and the speaker areas were comfortable too. The HD and battery seemed to stay at a very low temperature, probably below 40C most of the time. The fans are more efficient at actually getting the heat out. One minute after quitting the game the temperatures were back to 40s. Now idling in high 30s, but it's also not too warm in my room right now.
The battery life is great, and I will finally have to learn how to write parallelizable code.
Lion eats up all the ram. I'm happy I didn't upgrade the old machine, since it only has 2GB. On the other hand, right now I don't feel the urgent need to upgrade to 8GB. The reason is that with the SSD, swapping doesn't slow down your system that much.
Not sure what to do with the old system. I will probably keep it as a backup machine, but it feels like wasting a still very good laptop.
edit: Also, screw optibay, screw storage... with the SSD, the laptop is completely inaudible!
Also, I don't get the iCloud thing. Since I don't have any iOS devices, and the other macs run SL, there is nothing I can do with the cloud...
