Just got my MacBook Pro today... so far it is taking some getting used to but I actually like the experience. I am sure it will be even better once my RAM comes and I get everything set up to my liking.

When buying one of the refurb MBP's from the Applestore, does it come in "like new" condition or will it have scratches, dents or other cosmetic issues?

I just got my second refurbished MacBook Pro today, and neither refurbs had any cosmetic issues at all.

A question: Is it just me, or is the LED backlighting on (at least) the antiglare early 2011s a little uneven? The top corners seem to have less light hitting them at settings once you drop below ~75% of max brightness. Perhaps this is just a flaw in my unit and I'll end up needing to get a replacement?

I'm happy to hear that most people are receiving their refurbished products in "like new" conditions! This sounds like a great way to save some money.

Just a couple more questions regarding the refurbs.....

1) When buying a refurbed MBP, if you end up not liking it for one reason or another, are you able to return it (just as you are when buying a new one), and if so, are there any fees for doing so (restocking fee or otherwise)?

2) When buying a refurbed MBP, is the shipping always free? Or is this just a "holiday special" going on right now?

3) When due you think we'll start seeing the current "late 2011" model MBP's start being listed on the website?

Thank you!

1. It has the same one–year warranty as other Macs. You can also buy AppleCare. You can return it. There is no restock fee. I have heard you cannot return it at retail, and have to do so by mail, but I have no personal experience with this, and usually only bother with retail for stuff they can immediately turn–over anyhow. They will, however, service refurbished Macs in–store. I had a number of faulty batteries replaced (and well outside of warranty) at three different Apple stores over the three year life of my past MBP.

2. Shipping is free for all computers on Apple.com, I believe. It's a very large purchase, so they can afford to eat the shipping cost. On my new MBP, they actually overnighted it to me, even though I only got the free "express" shipping. My first refurb had free shipping, but not "express", and took about a week to arrive.

3. Probably in a few months. I needed a new laptop immediately, so I couldn't have waited, anyhow, but the differences are very marginal: slightly faster processor and the Raedon 6770m rather than 6750m in the high–end model. Even in Windows games, the FPS and other improvements are largely marginal, even on higher end games, for those cards. There is some real improvement, but if you need a laptop, you're probably not going to regret just ordering now. The real thing to wait for would be Ivybridge and integrated USB 3.0, but you may not see refurb prices on those for a year or more.

Thank you Plethon for taking the time to answer all my questions! I found it very helpful!

I hope you are able to get your screen brightness straightened out.

Suppose I should introduce myself. Long time Windows/Dos user. User I guess would be an understatement, extreme power user maybe? And unlike some, I actually like Windows a lot (7 is a pretty dang good operating system).

I have tinkered around with Mac's throughout my IT/Computer life (20 years, and I am 30 years old). But after my last ordeal with a new Dell laptop recently, I needed something more. I just opened my own business, and I don't have time to be dealing with idiots that call themselves order support.

After going to the local apple store to pick up some items for a client, looking around at the staff, the customers, and the excellent customer service. I knew what my next step was.

Ordered a late 2011 15" MBP (I think you guys call it "base"), with the HiRes AG screen. And after spending about a week on it, I have fallen in love. The build quality is insane! Absolutely am digging OSX. So much so, that the wife has a 13" MBA all wrapped up under the tree.

I am a forum junkie, so I hope my stay is welcome and will try to help out where I can :)

Is B&H Photo a reliable place to get a computer? I see they're running a free copy of Parallels + free shipping + 1/2 AppleCare if I go that route. Thinking of pulling the trigger with them on this experiment rather than Amazon.

Well, last night Amazon posted a "Like New" model of the low-end current 13.3" MBP and I bit. Got the computer, 8GB of RAM (and the properly sized screwdriver to put it in), wired Apple keyboard, and a neoprene sleeve for under $1130. Not too shabby! I should have it Thursday.

I just order my refurb MBP (early 2011) 2.2GHz quadcore with the 1GB 6750M, 4GB/500GB(7200rpm). Total out the door, $1,957.03.

I'm going to wait and see if I get any sort of free upgrades before ordering ram but expect to order 16GB shortly after it arrives. I also need to get a copy of parallels and windows7 to run on it.. good times.

:D

ordered a 15", 2.4ghz, hi-res macbook pro.
my first mac :D
hope its worth the money and the next revision doesn't come out anytime soon lol.

is macsales a good place to buy more RAM?

Do these free "silent upgrades" people talk about on refurbished models happen often?
I heard of somebody getting a silent upgrade from dual core i5 to quad core i7 recently...

O_O

I'm looking at getting a refurbished macbook pro sometime next week.

I was planning on upgrading the hard drive to a Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid right away. So do refurbished macs include the osx disk? If so will I be able to just pop in the new hard drive and put the osx disk in and install osx?

Thanks for any help,
Chris

My recent 15" refurb came installed with OSX but did not include the OSX disk.

I just got a 2nd hand Macbook Pro, it´s the 13" + i7 model with only 2 months and barely used.

I swapped it for my mac mini 2011 base model + TB Display (can´t justify such a screen). I keep my 120gb SATA 3 SSD and the guy throws a 8GB DDR3 Hyperx pack as well (apart from the 4gb already installed)

We´ll see how it goes.

Just upgraded from my early 2009 MacBook with an MC721ll/a- 2.0 i7 15 inch from Amazon warehouse deals for only $1203 with next day shipping (Prime member)! I think I did alright. I was looking for the 2.2 models, but ultimately decided I didn't need the better discrete graphics for anything in particular as I don't do any gaming, editing or rendering really- regular student user. I plan on throwing a Crucial M4 in it, as per the suggestions of the board.

Should receive it by Tuesday the absolute latest, can't wait!

Received my "Like New" Late 2011 13" MBP today from Amazon Warehouse Deals.

"Like New" is a bit of a misnomer. It is new. Like, it was sealed in its shipping box from apple and then sealed in its retail box inside that. I was going to do a fresh install of Lion when I got it figuring someone had done something to it, but I guess not.

Loving it so far. It's going to be quite an adjustment from Windows, but I can't wait for my SSD to arrive to slap that thing in with its 8GB of RAM and watch it fly!

Just opened my refurbished MBP 15" (i5, 330M)...absolutely PRISTINE!

I have examined every inch of it for scratches, scuffs, discoloration, dead pixels, backlight bleed, loose keyboard keys, overtightened screws, dust behind screen, trackpad stains, chips, off-centre lid, uneven base, etc.

Not a single flaw. This purchase (and that of an earlier refurb iPad 1) restored my faith in the refurb line after a string of terrible 2009 Air and C2D MBP 13"s refurbs that were scratched and dented to all hell.

Going from a 2010 Air 11" to the 15" screen is an investment in my eyes that I just had to make. Plus I love going back to the wide gamut display - the Air screens were mediocre in that regard.

Not bad for $1229

This is my first post here but I've been a lurker on these forums for a while.

I've just ordered the base 13" MacBook Pro after a lifetime of being a Windows user. :) I'm a web design/development student and it seems using a Mac system is now industry standard so I thought I better learn how to use one before I graduate!

I'm very excited! I'm going to upgrade the RAM to 8GB and install an SSD and hopefully the MacBook will last me years and allow me to work more efficiently.

It's due to be delivered on the 4th of January but I sent it to my student halls so I won't receive it until I go back on the 8th. *WANT NOW!*

finally!

D'oh...

black screens, insane page outs and uber beach balls on my new MBP... I returned it today. I am a slight bit disappointed, but it's par for the course so I am fine with it.

Still have my iMac and iPhone and Nano army so it's all good :)

I've joined the Apple Family!!!!

All this time I've had an iPhone and an iPad I just couldn't let go of my Windows machine, even mocking some MAc users on the gaming forums about their silly Macs. Well after Alienware have send me two lemons in a row, I've decided to pull the trigger and get a 15 inch MAcbook Pro!!!! Just felt like sharing!!!!!! Can't believe I've been w/o MAc OS for this long!!!!!!
