I'm a bit conflicted about this new retina display. I love the crisp/sharpness of the display but it does feel lower resolution (text, icons, apps are all really big). There just isn't much screen real estate.

I was under the impression that in addition to the benefits of retina we'd somehow get more screen real estate at the same time without having to have it scaled. Hmmmm...need to keep playing with it a bit more.

The scaling is something new. It's not just running at a non-native resolution like before. On the highest real estate setting you get the equivalent real estate of the 17" Macbook Pro's 1920x1200.

In the Anandtech article it says that the "1680x1050" equivalent mode on the new Macbook Pro looks better than the old Macbook Pro with the 1680x1050 screen option.

No, the "retina" resolution is effectively the normal 1440x900 but at 4x the pixel density (hence the 2880x1800 retina resolution).

Hmmmm...need to keep playing with it a bit more.

Wait... do you have one???

Yeah, I played around with this...but not sure what the 'Best for Retina' is based on...am I actually losing out on anything by scaling up? It seemed to look ok when I did.

Got it -- and yes, I've got one. Typing on it right now :D

When you set it to the highest "More Space" mode, it renders at 3840x2400 (the retina equivalent of 1920x1200) and then downscales it to 2880x1800. Not perfect, but potentially pretty close.

Best For Retina just means it's running at 1440x900 retina mode (2880x1800), with no downscaling.

That screen pic looks familiar

I hope to god it is just me but those pics make it seem that the screen has that same "yellow tint " to them, towards right side of the screen.

I hope i am just seeing things and that is not the case because that would be ********.

My 2008 MBP is feeling very inadequate right now... :p

Do you find the apps/scrolling laggy at all when setting the display to the "More Space" scaled setting?

Look at everything around the screen. The Macbook itself, the background stuff. The yellow is just the lighting, everything is yellow tinted in the picture.

I Know The New Macs Don't Come With Mountain Lion But..

Will They Later Be Upgraded For Free? Or Will We Still Have To Buy It? I Thought I Read Somewhere That It'll Be Free But I Can No Longer Find That Article Anymore.

Thanks.

Mbp 15.4/2.7/16gb/512gb flash-usa

Fedex is showing delivery on June 14th before 10:30 for my Retina MBP/16GB/512GB. It's my first Mac, and I don't think I can wait that long :D

Big thanks to MacRumors! I've been following this site for a few months now waiting for this announcement. I was watching the live blog yesterday and pulled out the credit card after the specs for the Retina Pros came across the wire. This site is awesome.

Thank you so much for posting these! (Although, the last 3 screenshots look sort of out of focus which makes the resolution of the screen seem blurry...but, hey, thanks still!)

One important question, when the display is set to a scaled resolution ("More Space") is the scrolling in Safari and other apps "laggy"?

Some other posters have said the OS feels less snappy in the scaled resolution modes.

I was taking the pics with my iPhone 4S, and my dogs were raising a commotion behind, so the pics being a bit blurry is my fault: the screen is very sharp (and colorful).

I thought that the scrolling might be laggy at first, but I switched the prefs to only use the high performance graphics, and scrolling is great now.

He replied regarding the glare about 4 posts up.

OP: Have you had time to check out the fan noise and temperature under stress?

I haven't checked it out under stress yet, but I will soon. I'm going through the process of installing apps and hunting for license keys. :)

Is it just me or does the bezel, top and bottom, seem larger than the previous MacBook Pro?

I think that the bezel is thinner on the left and right, since the new MBP isn't quite as wide as the old one (by a couple tenths of an inch).
