Hey MR,
I am medical student, and finally have managed to purchase a rMBP after many days of research! I am extremely amped up about it since it is a great investment for my career.
Specs: 15'' 2.6ghz//8gb//512gb.
1) Any recommendations or advice for Apps or any medical related software? Keep in mind, I have not purchased any software from Apple, and my rMBP will be coming stock. What sort of Software should I be looking at for my MB?
2) Ive been browsing the other threads in search of a solid case for it. (Anything like an Otterbox?)
3) I, (obviously like the rest of you of course) would love to keep it in 100% condition throughout. With that being said, are Keyboard//Trackpad//Screen covers good for this? Any recommendations of which ones are great?
4) For those who have already received their rMBPs, please share your thoughts, insights.. pros and cons.
Any advice is GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks and take care.
You guys seem well informed about shipping times, etc. so I would like to know what are my chances of getting a retina from a New York store when I visit from Scotland at the end of August?
I'm waiting on hold trying to figure out when my local store gets them, so I can exchange my old 13inch macbookI WANT THE BACKLIT KEYBOARD!
I'm curious you say the keyboard is worse.
My typing seems significantly faster on it compared to the MBA and ever the Apple Wireless Keyboard.
A few people have been moaning that the distance has been reduced too much for keystrokes, so if anything, you should find it more responsive.
What browser are you using in win7, chrome is unusable at the moment.
This will probably blow your mind. Internet explorer seems to be optimized for retina.![]()

As for the keyboard. I find it much less responsive in comparison to the standard macbook pro. I'm missing the springy feeling.![]()
retina MBP, 2.3, 16GB, 256GB.
Windows 7 in Boot Camp, 192GB
OSX 60GB + permanent 64GB MicroSD (NiftyDrive ordered)
I set the windows partition to be that large so there would be plenty of room for games and mods. OSX partition should be fine with 60gb on the SSD and 64GB for slower storage.
I also followed a guide online to tweak Win7 for performance and size - turned off all visual effects, disabled hibernate, etc.
Some initial observations:
- Windows 7 looks very good @ native res if you turn the DPI to 200%.
- Chrome for Windows 7 is NOT READY. Where is Safari 6 for windows?
- OSX is totally usable when the resolution is turned to the max, even at ~3ft. I was worried i'd have to turn it down.
- this is the best computer i've ever used. no doubt.
- the rMBP keyboard is not as responsive as my 2011 Macbook Air. it's a little disappointing.
About RAM:
I'm coming from a Macbook Air with 2GB that was running like hell. Right now I have a modest amount of stuff open (2 word documents, 4 Safari tabs) and i'm sitting at 4GB in use. It will be nice to be able to open Photoshop & Illustrator and not have the machine explode. I may not need the full 16GB now, but I'm sure i'll be happy when the next version of OSX comes out.
About gaming:
In OSX, I had no trouble playing Half Life 2 at native res. I turned the resolution down just a touch to get a higher framerate.
In Windows, I attached a Microsoft Wireless Receiver and an xbox controller and tried Kindoms of Amalur. The framerate wasn't acceptable at native res, but the game runs beautifully at 1920x1200.
Also, the IPA. I'm very happy with the setup.

Also, what are you thoughts on the running temperature - while gaming, web browsing, editing?
