I'm a few days late, but I think refurb's are definitely the way to go if you want to save some money on basically brand new MBP's. I bought mine from MacMall, complete with warranty, and so far everything is great.

Thanks , my rMBP is comming on Thursday, I'm looking forward hahaha

I'm sure you'll love it! I would've got the rMBP but I wanted to perform my own upgrades so I went with the classic. I couldn't afford the fully upgraded rMBP lol

I got my refurb 15" with matte screen and DAMMMMN that thing pisses me off.
It makes this POP sound like you eating rice krispies once in a while but it's LOUD. Not that little buzz/pop/noise sound but a loud POP.

I read that it's the battery wrapping or something like that.
I'll see how long I can stand this. Screen is perfect so don;t want to risk getting another one with some other issues.

In all honesty....I wouldn't. These things cost a good bit of money. Don't settle.

Last month I bought the base model 15'' rMBP from Best Buy for $1,199.99. I got it for such a good price because it was open box and I was able to talk them down to 40% off. That's one of the perks of working for BBY. It was awesome too because the box had been open, but it was like the person just bought it and immediately returned it. It was still wrapped up and untouched inside the box. I examined it and there isn't a single scratch, ding, mark, or anything on it. I have always been a diehard Windows fan, but when they released 8, I just hated everything about it. I decided to give Mac OS a chance when I got an awesome deal on a 27'' iMac, open-box from best buy again, for $1,079.99. I fell in love with the operating system, and after installing Windows 7 using Parallels, I have no reason to ever go back to a PC again. I love my iMac but I found that I needed something a little bit more portable, thats why I picked up the Macbook. Now to be completely honest, I don't think I would have ever shelled out retail price on either one of these because I think Apple way overprices the hardware you actually get, but for the price I paid, I have been completely satisfied with the new ecosystem. I posted a picture of my receipt below. Sorry for the bad quality, its those damn thermal printers. I only had a receipt for the Macbook, I seemed to have misplaced my iMac's receipt.

So I just ordered a Mid 2010 MBP

As the title says,

just purchased a used 13" MBP(MC374LL/A) for the wife. She didn't want to spend a lot of money as she just needs this for basic data entry.

2.4GHz
4GB
250GB HDD

this will be the first Apple laptop I have ever bought. My first Mac was a used G4 Sawtooth, that never gave me any trouble. I have read some threads here about MBPs and will continue to read up on how to troubleshoot and issue that may arise(though I hope not).

Refurbished rMBP came with 16 GB RAM instead of 8 GB

Just got my base model 15", 2012, refurbished for 1.599. It came with free upgrade to 16GB RAM! Couldn't be happier!

Same thing here. Ordered my refurbished mid-2012 rMBP last Wednesday evening. I had thought about waiting till Monday (Sept. 30) just to weigh my options a little more but decided that $600 off new was too good to pass up.

It's a good thing I didn't wait--they showed "out of stock" online at the Apple Store on Saturday, with evidently a few models scattered around at stores throughout the U.S.

My rMBP arrived yesterday afternoon (Monday) and I started the set up last night, letting it migrate files from my Lenovo ThinkPad 500 overnight via WiFi.

Everything has gone well and I really like it so far. I had to check on two things: who made the screen and how much RAM it has.

Screen maker: LG. Oh, well, it's a good-looking screen. We'll have to see how the image retention thing goes. Hopefully Mavericks will help.

Memory: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Well . . . super! I was a little concerned about being locked in at 8 GB but figured it would be okay for the next four or five years. Having 16 GB, though, is a real bonus in memory, not to mention a nice $200 upgrade for free.

I have to say that this has turned out to be a really good $1599 spent (plus the requisite state tax, of course). I've owned PC's for the past 25 years. Maybe I'll give Macs a run for the next 25 years.

Haswell? What Haswell? ;)

all rumors and indications for the past several months have pointed to an announcement of new rMBP this month, the 15" hasn't been updated in 1.5 years.

It's just crazy at this point to not have the patience to wait for the new generation

It all depends on whether you can wait or if you are willing to pay full price versus buying refurbished or new at deep discounts

If I needed or wanted the latest thing Apple has coming out, I agree that it would be foolish not to wait a couple more weeks.

I need an acceptable processor, an SSD drive, a decent amount of RAM, and the retina screen. The new rMBP about to come out would do what I need probably negligibly better than what I bought.

Right. I don't need the latest thing out, but my budget needs the deep discount, which amounts to about $800 thanks to Apple sending my refurb with 16GB SDRAM instead of 8GB. I keep my notebooks for 4 or 5 years, so buying refurbished works for me.

Money lesson:

Its not savings to get something you didn't expect unless you plan to sell it... ;)

And in 4-5 years that FREE upgrade that you did not expect will not be worth more then $25 added to the price of your old machine that you do not even have the original box for.

So I say enjoy your machine. Don't worry about the $$ now that you spent it.

The end.

Those are good points were I worrying "about the $$ now that spent" them. :)

But I'm not worrying about it now. I'm merely showing that, budget-wise, this is a good move for many of us. The unanticipated but appreciated 8GB SDRAM helps to future-proof a bit. That wasn't as much about the money as it was a little gravy on the meat.

However, were I to stretch my budget to buy an about-to-be-released machine for $2200 or $2400, then I would be in some angst. I would then have a computer that would not really do what I need any better than the refurb I could have gotten, and my other financial priorities would have taken a hit.

Other folks have different budgets and needs and wants. I'm only responding to the idea that it is foolish to buy a deeply-discounted refurb rMBP now with Haswell evidently about to be released.

What I would agree with is that it would be hard to justify buying a new, February 2013 rMBP at the starting point of $2199 now. I would limp along with whatever I had or could use for a few weeks.

My point is not to knock those who are waiting to get the Haswell rMBP. For those who are away from AC a good bit of time, Haswell is going to be a positive thing, not to mention other points that have been made. I hope it's everything many are anticipating. Everyone's needs and desires are different.

Despite what current owners say, READ PRO REVIEWS, the current rMBP are fundamentally flawed in that they just don't have the power to maintain that retina resolution

My friend bought one in January and I was SHOCKED to see lag when swiping from screen to screen, it still does that on his laptop today after all the updates apple released. You can't fix weak hardware with a software update.

And you keep you laptops for 4-5 years, so it makes even less sense to buy old technology, spend the extra couple hundred and be happy in the long run

I disagree on the lag. I own a 13 in rMBP and see no lag that u describe.

You seem to be a self appointed expert, stating owners such as myself are delusional when we see no lag

I have no idea what you are doing to see this lag but maybe he has too May apps opened hogging ram.

Show me a so called Pro review that states the issue exists today.

I just swiped my from screen to screen and saw no lag. My physics professor friend had shown me his, same model but with 8GB memory, and he's had it for a year and there is no screen lag.

The only thing that bothers me about mine, and maybe it shouldn't, is that I just got curious about the battery cycle count and discovered where to find it. The count is 23 after having the computer for a week. It's been on the battery maybe four or five times since I received it. I read somewhere that Apple replaces the battery for refurbished computers only if there is a defect in the original battery. Everything else about the computer seems "like new."

Stop reading "PRO REVIEWS" and read what people actually say about the current rMBP's running Mavericks. For the most part it is LAG FREE, if you were even seeing lag before. It has been said time and time again, it is a software issue.
