Ohhhhh, go home stupid storm! :( I hope they'll put them into a plane shortly.

Btw are you sure that UPS flies to London and not to another airport? I have no previous experience and internal informations, but just looking around for info I found that their biggest UK hub is in Tamworth which is basically 15mins from East Midlands Airport. Is there any reason to use one of London's busy airports?

Oh, you may very well be right. I honestly have no clue about such matters. I assumed it would be London, but it could well be somewhere else. :)

You guys need to chill with tracking planes LOL.. the laptop is on its way..

Come on, this is practically a MacRumors tradition. Besides, it's fun. :)

Rate a student's rMBP purchase! Feedback?

I just took a long-awaited plunge on a refurb'd rMBP. Specs below. I'm an engineer so lots of coding will be done on this, might go with a Windows partition or will use Citrix if I desperately need modeling software and can't get to a lab. I'll get a laptop next summer when I intern, so that'll eat up the majority of the big time computing I'll be doing. Then my next computer will be on my future company (hopefully).

Refurbished 15.4-inch MacBook Pro 2.6GHz Quad-core Intel i7 with Retina Display
Originally released June 2012

8GB of 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM

512GB Flash Storage

720p FaceTime HD Camera

NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory

For those of you more familiar with some of the intricacies of Macbook hardware setups, what will be my 'limiting reagent' here (if you can oblige with the chemistry reference)? Any other tips/tricks for a student with this guy?

This is RAM-specific, but you might find it an interesting read. Given your use-case, you may not have one.

If your machine can't handle it, sounds like your Uni. has the infrastructure available so you could just use it as a terminal. That being said, the above seems to suggest that you might be just fine as-is.

Also, this may not answer your intended question, but advice for a student from a former student would be: treat it like your child - always assume that you are the only person that cares about the safety of your laptop.

Anyone have problems with UPS lying that they delivered the package? Yesterday, it said that the customer wasn't available, which I was, and there was no knock or anything like that.

Not sure why they would lie. I don't want the same thing to happen on Monday. :( This will be their "second" attempt too.

I can't pick it up myself either because I have work but my brother will be there to receive the package.

This has happened to me a few times with UPS and Fedex. I think the employee just wants to knock off early and doesn't deliver the packages. Typical for a Friday or a Saturday.

Yeah, I thought so too. I would have enjoyed the free time on the weekend so much if he had just delivered the package yesterday.

Hopefully this doesn't happen tomorrow. Is there any way I can prevent this from happening, other than picking it up myself? If I don't get it tomorrow, I am going to be really pissed off.

I think you can have UPS take it to a local UPS store for pick-up. Pretty sure FedEx offers that, would have to assume that their competitor does similar. It isn't as nice as having it delivered to you, but it makes sure you don't miss it.

Wow, that actually seems like a good idea. I'm not sure they do that but I'll call in the morning and see if I can have them do that. Thanks!

Thanks for the read and the advice! I treat my stuff extremely carefully (almost paranoid if you will), so I definitely will with my new machine. Probably throwing a case on it ASAP to keep it in top shape.

I just ordered a 13", i7/16/512, as a replacement for my 2011 i7/4/128 11" MBA. I'm leaving for vacation on Wednesday, so it's actually going to be nice to get home, as it will wait for me to unbox it.

I have had this problem before and Hope it doesn't happen tomorrow.

I am thinking of putting a sign up saying "UPS: I am home, please ring the doorbell or call"! lol

Yep. Already thought of that haha. But if they just don't want to deliver, they don't even show up to your door. It's so frustrating.

I just ordered :
Available to ship: 1 - 3 business days
Delivers: Nov 1 - Nov 5 by 2-3 Business Days

15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display

$2,299.00

With the following configuration:

• 2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz
• 16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
• 256GB PCIe-based Flash Storage
• Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
• Accessory Kit

Replacing a 17" MBP 4GB (top specs) ... I just replaced it's mechanical hard drive with an SSD. However, that still didn't fix the performance issues I had. Although it is capable of playing 1080p MkV files, it can't even play 480p youtube full-screen. Old MBP will be converted to a full duty linux box.

Ergh, Thursday couldn't come soon enough! Can't wait to get my fully loaded 13" rMBP!

But reading from this thread, I wonder why mine was shipped via Fedex vs everyone else's UPS.

Whenever UPS says "no one home" or anything like that when I was home, I always call. The most common cause of the problem is the package being put on the wrong truck for delivery.

I did call but they said replied that they can't call the driver on Saturdays. Some ******** that is. They told me that they would let the driver know on Monday so I'm hoping that they get the message.

Nobody that I know of pays UPS extra to deliver on Saturday so I expect that you will see it on monday

Didn't pay extra myself. They told me that they upgraded the shipping to Saturday themselves and it was actually out on delivery on a Saturday. So I was pretty happy that I was going to get it. From 8 am to the time I got the notification that the customer wasn't there, I was sitting by the window (yeah yeah ) watching the window. No UPS truck.

You should join ups my choice and setup a 2 hour window for delivery:D or pick it up at the hub

I ordered this today as a birthday present to myself

15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display

$2,599.00

With the following configuration:

• 2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz
• 16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
• 512GB PCIe-based Flash Storage
• Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
• Accessory Kit

To finally upgrade my old and tired blackbook. It still runs fairly well, but is getting a little more obsolete with the applications I want to use.

No regrets yet, it should arrive by Halloween

I just ordered rMBP

Ever since the new rMBP announcement I was debating on whether to get the newest and greatest or last year's 13 inch model.

I went with last year's mode (refurbished) from the Apple store. I can't wait for it to arrive next Monday!

I got it for $1162, which is good imo. The new base model seemed to expensive for what I was getting. only 4GB ram :(

Either way, I cannot wait :D

What specs did you got on the 2012 13 inch rMBP?

What specs did you got on the 2012 13 inch rMBP?

From Apple:

-2.5 GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz)
-3MB shared L3 cache
-8GB of 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
-Intel HD Graphics 4000
-128GB Flash Storage

I'm pretty upset about the storage, but that's fine. I just need something nice and portable for school. I use my iMac for all my storage. :)

Yes, it seams that I was right because mine was landed in East Midlands Airport a couple of hours ago. Can it make it to my house later today? I hope so...
