Just opened up a MBP 15" that I purchased over Black Friday. Kinda of miss the portability of a 13" to be honest.

I am very much enjoying the extra screen real estate compared to the 13.3" rMBP. That's one reason I wanted the 15.5" machine. I also wanted to get one now before Apple completely changes the looks and functionality of it as I really like the ports on here and the discrete graphics.

Sold my mid 2014 15" base and bought a 13" rmbp.

specs:

3.1 i7
16gb ram
512gb ssd

Just saw the price of a refurb model with 1tb and wondering if I should return and get that.

Alright, so I'm ready to replace my dinosaur of a laptop. I'm looking at a 13" rMBP, and asking myself whether 8GB is good enough, or if 16GB is worth springing for. Any recommendations?
  • I'm replacing a 2007 MBP with 4GB of RAM. Opening a single Win7 virtual machine makes it run like a dog. Is this more likely due to the RAM, or due to the Hard Disk (not being SSD)? I.e., will 8GB be enough?
  • I plan to use this for web development and as a Photoshop/art studio machine.
  • I can nab a refurb for about $1300, which is acceptable to me. I can also nab a 16GB model for about $1600 on an edu discount, which bypasses what I want to pay for one. I have been bitten in the past for not splurging enough, but do you think it's worth it?

@wallaby
16GB is worth it. Especially when u run VM. I had 8GB rMBP, and after only 3 months sold it and bought 16GB rMBP. Huge difference, especially when you run VM (I do as well). Get 16GB coz of that, and to be future proof (I see you hold on to your comp for a long time, and this can't be upgraded anymore, so...)

I agree that if you are running virtual machines, 16 GB might be a good idea.

On my iMac, I run OS X, a version of secure Linux, and Windows 7. I also pre-load applications so that they're available instantly. I wasn't happy until I went to 32 GB, to be honest.

On the MacBook Pro that I bought a couple of weeks ago, things seem to run well with Parallels + Windows 7.

It would probably perform tolerably with 8 GB, but the problem is that I will have to switch back and forth because of a proprietary Windows application that polls multiple locations. I use the polled information for reporting and accounting in OS X applications, and I will normally only want to use OS X applications.

The problem is that when I want to have Windows 7 and OS X open at the same time and switching back and forth, it helps to have the extra RAM there, with everything already pre-loaded.

Loving the PCI-E flash drive on the MacBook, too. It's not quite enough to make me buy a new iMac...but...almost!!

Is it necessary to do a clean install on new rMBPs? I do it with any new Windows PCs I get.

After researching forever, I finally bought my new MBP. I'm upgrading from a 2009 13 inch MBP to a 2014 15 inch MBP (the one for $1799 on B&H). After I ordered it, I had a lot of buyer's remorse for spending that amount of money. When these machines were more upgradable, I used to order the base model and upgrade the hard drive and RAM over time, and am not used to paying for everything up front. However, once I got it, I love this new machine. I've only scratched the surface of what it's capable of, but the screen and the speed of this thing are incredible.

After the 5th time I had brought my rMBP 15" (early 2013, entry model) back for repairs, the manager at the Apple store decided to swap it for a brand new rMBP 15" (Mid 2015, 512ssd/370x) model. All I can say is that I am really pleased with the service.

A little demon inside me wanted to sell the new Macbook right away and wait for the Skylake version. However, after much consideration and, more importantly, research on the differences between the Haswell/Skylake chips, I've decided to keep it. And I'm not regretting it! Man this thing is fast, way faster than the 2013 model. I notice this especially in Final Cut Pro X, insane transfer rates! Also, this model doesn't seem to be affected by the issues I had with the 2013 version (graphics glitches, dead pixels).

Now all I need to get is a good cover. My previous one did have some dents in it after a while.

This 2015 15" will be my companion for many years to come!

Hey, just got my first MBP -- 13-inch early-2015 MBP w/Retina.

This is a really, really ignorant question. But I swear, I swearched the thread and I searched the web but couldn't find an answer...

Is there no longer a power indicator anywhere on the unit, or am I just blind?? My 2007 MacBook has one. My wife's 2011 MBP has one...but it would be nice to know if my MBP is indeed fully shut down before I close it and put it in the case...is there a definitive way to know without having to spin the thing around and watch the little cut-out apple?

Just got my rMBP today as well and I'm wondering the same thing

buying a late-2011 17" MBP tonight for $700 - and it's got two drives which i'm very excited about:

Processor 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
Software OS X 10.9.5 (13F1507)
Primary Hard Drive: 128GB Solid State SATA Drive for Applications
Secondary 750GB SATA Disk for Storage

i plan on maxing out the RAM to 16GB @ 1600MHz via Corsair Vengeance.

$700 sure beats $1700/2000 for basic recording/demo-quality recordings !
i might try to use a Wacom tablet one day to get into digital drawing, but i just need a newer machine to outspeed my 2007 iMac.

Are you sure thats Late 2011? Late 2011 has 1GB vram, not just 512mb.

Press any key besides the power button or tap the trackpad. If it's powered off nothing will happen. If it's in sleep mode it will wake up.

What if it's in the middle of shut down though?? Sometimes it's hard to tell whether the screen is off or just dark.

Do you have the force-touch trackpad? If so, it will only vibrate when the system isn't fully shutdown I think?

Is itnormal a brand new rmbp 15" base to have pin wheel thing going on for 3 secs when the app is not responsive. Is it even normal for an app to be unresponsive when the laptop is brand new? Its happening to me. I bought it yesterday.

Good afternoon, where am I supposed to look for a refurbished and/or used macbook pro at a really attractive price ?

Looking in eBay/amazon, the prices of refurbished or used laptops are very close to the brand new ones.

In my opinion, the price of a used (second-hand) or a refurbished laptop, should be significantly lower than a brand new one, in order this lower price to push me overcome any "risk related with the buying of a used or refurbished machine".
Do I make any basic mistake?

Regards, George, Greece.
