Cliff notes version - Reported a problem with the LCD backlight and keyboard on April 22nd. Applecare expires on May 15th. It's a 2006 17" MBP. Applecare asked me to go in for service, I was in Kuwait and the local store was a joke. Came back to the States last month. Machine went in and they replaced a BUNCH of stuff. When it came back, there was still a mooing from the logic board. I was very persistent, polite, annoying
, slightly demanding and escalated all the way to the top.
I probably got lucky and since I was stationed in Kuwait and returning next week, they probably felt sorry for me. Anyway, I'm getting a new one and can't wait.
I'm glad I 'downgraded' to the 5400. Performance shouldn't take a big hit and there's a lot of threads on problems with the 7400 drives popping up. Not to mention, I can walk into a store and exchange it if there's a problem. The BTO tag for a 50 dollar drive upgrade wasn't worth it. If it's too slow I'll buy a WD Scorpio Blue for 80 bucks and use the internal as a portable in an enclosure.

So ... they approved the replacement yesterday, put the order in today (Wednesday) and gave me overnight shipping. I checked the tracker and its supposed to be here Monday.
