Today I became a MBP owner

Hi guys!

I wanted to take the chance to say thanks to all who responded to my questions here before my purchase.

Today I received my MBP 17" anti-glare, 3.06GHz, 500GB 7200rpm, 4GB machine.

And with the 20% ADC discount, it was damn good value.

I can not believe how small and light this is for at 17". It even fits in the 15" laptop sleeve I bought at the supermarket.

now I can finally ditch my dual core Opteron 170 workstation. :D

Now I just need to find an external NAS box for my old 250GB Samsung PATA drive, so that it can be used for Time Maachine.

Not sure if this counts but apple is giving me a brand new MBP 17 as a replacement for my 1st gen 2.16. :)

They offered me the 7200 drive option but I downgraded to the standard config to avoid CTO.

Order will be placed tomorrow, hoping it's here in a couple of days

I'm slightly concerned. My MBP is scheduled to arrive tomorrow, according to Fedex. However, the last shipping update reported it was still in Shanghai, China, and hasn't been updated in almost 48 hours. Either they simply forgot to update the status, or F***Ex screwed up big time and lost it along the way. Should I expect my precious to arrive on my doorstep tomorrow, or has something gone horribly wrong? It says shipped on 6/22, and I'm in NY, btw.

Mine has said In Transit for about a day and a half and is scheduled for delivery Friday. I think that maybe they didn't/forgot to scan it. If I don't get it Friday Fedex is going to get an ear full, so I am hoping they just didn't scan it.

Which level membership do you have? I called up Apple thinking that I could just purchase a Student membership while buying my new Mac if the membership price comes out to be equal or lower than my total discount, but the Customer rep said that they cannot disclose this information to non-members.

Just unboxed my 17" MBP

I'm so excited. This is my first mac. Wow, the laptop just seem so sleek. Little bit overwhelmed. The Laptop got here at 9:00 this morning, but we had family in town and a day trip planned for six flags. So i have been away all day and finally just got home to enjoy it. It has been worth the wait. Lot of things to do, like figure out how to use this awesome machine.

Cliff notes version - Reported a problem with the LCD backlight and keyboard on April 22nd. Applecare expires on May 15th. It's a 2006 17" MBP. Applecare asked me to go in for service, I was in Kuwait and the local store was a joke. Came back to the States last month. Machine went in and they replaced a BUNCH of stuff. When it came back, there was still a mooing from the logic board. I was very persistent, polite, annoying :), slightly demanding and escalated all the way to the top.

I probably got lucky and since I was stationed in Kuwait and returning next week, they probably felt sorry for me. Anyway, I'm getting a new one and can't wait.

I'm glad I 'downgraded' to the 5400. Performance shouldn't take a big hit and there's a lot of threads on problems with the 7400 drives popping up. Not to mention, I can walk into a store and exchange it if there's a problem. The BTO tag for a 50 dollar drive upgrade wasn't worth it. If it's too slow I'll buy a WD Scorpio Blue for 80 bucks and use the internal as a portable in an enclosure.

So ... they approved the replacement yesterday, put the order in today (Wednesday) and gave me overnight shipping. I checked the tracker and its supposed to be here Monday.

I have student membership, same as the "standart" membership, but at 99$ instead of 499$.

I just provided them with a scan of my passport and confirmation from my university that I am enrolled.

First time I called Apple store, the lady told me ADC members get 20%, university students 12% and other students 8%.

So this thing about not disclosing to non-members is new to me.

Hey guys,

I've ordered a macbook pro 2.8 from the UK refurb store. Got an even bigger disocunt on it thanks to my companies corporate discount! Was delivered on Tuesday and Wednesday but both times I was at work so couldn't sign for it.

Word of warning - In the UK Apple uses UPS. UPS seem to be the only courier who don't have a local depot so it means I have to drive 30 miles to their nearest depot, glad I got that extra discount now!

It'll really annoying that they won't ship to store. I want to order the LED display but the delivery thing is putting me off.

I don't believe that the ADC discounts are a straight 20%. It depends upon the product and the retail price level. Generally, the more expensive the product the bigger the percent discount. For example, you may only get 10% to 15% off a low-end MacBook because the profit margins are lower on that product.

Probably, I just know that I got 205 on the 17" :D
