One of the first things I did on the new MBP was fire up World of Warcraft. I'm using macOS & Metal API. Specs are 1TB, 2.7, 460. At first I was a little disappointed when I bumped up to mid settings and was getting low frame-rates. Then I changed my resolution to just above the 1920x1080 that I used on my Dell XPS 1647 and I was able to crank up the rest of the settings. I was used to playing on the lowest settings and the fans screaming like banshees on my Dell.
Parameters
I've slowly been increasing parameters individually and I'm blown away. I'm generally on mid-high settings. The most noticeable changes have been increasing my liquid quality and increasing the environmental/view/ground clutter sliders (all at 10 and still at 60FPS in questing zones).
The colors in general are super vibrant (almost over-saturated). Spells and effects make it like I'm playing an entirely different game. It's like going from Xbox to Xbox 360 back in the day.
Temperature and Fans
I did realize that Apple prefers a quiet machine to a cool machine, as it gets pretty hot before the fans kick on. The fans are much quieter than I'm used to, so I'm fine with it. The game sound drowns them out anyway. I do use a
cooling pad because putting the laptop directly on my lap is uncomfortable because of the heat. The cooling pad does a great job at mitigating this (even if it's not plugged in) and I notice the laptop is cooler when the pad is on.
Bugs
I have noticed a few minor bugs. When switching resolutions, I get a crazy red and black checker board, but restarting the game fixes this. Also, a few times parts of the ground textures have become transparent, so I'm walking on thin air. I'll have to take some screenshots. This never happened on Windows.
Mouse Acceleration
The most frustrating thing is that the two gaming mice I have are so wonky with this whole mouse acceleration thing. It's very hard to be as precise as I was on Windows. It's so bad that I've started learning how to play with just the trackpad, which actually hasn't been too bad.
I've tried the whole
Code:
defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.scaling -1
thing but it's not the same as on Windows. I either have to get used to it, learn to use the trackpad, or install Boot Camp I suppose. It seems the one solution,
SmoothMouse has no replacement.
TL;DR: Coming from a 2010 Dell XPS, the 15" MBP handles WoW like a champ. The macOS mouse acceleration sucks compared to Windows when using a gaming mouse, however.
