FYI you can only buy AppleCare now for a MacBook Pro up to 60 days after your purchase. They changed this when they introduced AppleCare Plus for MacBooks.

Are you in the US? That’s not the case for the UK. However, in the UK it’s just regular AppleCare, not AppleCare+.

Had a 2012 MBP for about 4-5 yrs then a 2015 MBP for just over a year. I have more apps and tabs open for work so decided to take the next step up. Never bought apple care, never had any issues and I carry mine around a lot.

Ordered the 15" 2nd base version (2.6GHz) online, can't wait. Manage to use unidays from a family member so got 10% discount and the free beats (which I'll probably sell)

Looks like there is no third party usb c > lightning so I need to get the official one right? (got iPhone 7)

Isn't it called Apple Care Protection Plan now for MBP ?

I’m not sure exactly what it’s called, but in the UK buying AppleCare simply means extending the warranty. No accidental damage coverage sadly.

I guess this is why they have different names. The Apple person I had on the phone was cautiously telling me this is not the same Apple Care as iPhones :)

Not true. Your Costco Visa card only extends the warranty on computers purchased AT Costco. The Visa card basically doubles the warranty on any computer you purchased from Costco and only Costco. Costco does not sell MacBooks, so I'm going to assume you bought your computer from some other retailer, thus rendering your "two-year warranty extension" void. Better get AppleCare!
That’s totally incorrect (it’s by Citi, not Costco), but it looks like if you buy AppleCare you can go farther!

Finally ordered a 13 inch with i5 16gb and 512gb. A month of travelling with my old 2011 MacBook convinced me that lighter is better for me. My major complain is the price. With exchange rates and taxes in Canada I’m at 3000.

I was going to do Apple care but I couldn’t handle the thought of going over three grand. I have a credit card extension for a year, might stick with that.

In generally, I think the price needs a reduction of 250 to 400 dollars to be more competitive. Or keep the price the same and make 16gb ram standard for the 13 inch too.

Thanks for the tip! I just ordered the Macbook Pro 15", i7 2.6Gz, 560X, 32gb, 1TB SSD. I ordered from Adorama to avoid the taxes, and used the appleinsider.com discount link to save another $50. Using the COSTCO Visa to purchase, means if I add Applecare+ when it gets here, it'll be covered for 5 years!

Anyone here bought the new 13” touch bar model who does dev work?

I remember reading a detailed balanced review of an app dev who had the 2016 model and one of his main criticism was that when he was doing his dev work - the battery would sometime last only 2-3 hours. It ended up making him paranoid of running out of battery and caused him to be concious of how he is using it and even changing how he’s using it which affected his productivity.

We are now on coffeelake and a slightly higher battery capacity - how do you rate your battery life?

Just surprised. I thought for sure that my MBP would be in the USA by now. Still sitting on clearing customs in Shanghai since Saturday. Hopefully, it shows it as being in Louisville (at least) by tomorrow!

Thank you :) i was worried about all the i9 talk but i think it just blew out of control im gonna do my own tests :)

I agree. As long as your own workload doesn't cause the thermal throttling issues seen, then you are ok. Most of the issues are caused by intense, long duration workloads that are more suited to desktops with liquid coolers that are able to handle the long duration workloads that many have ascribed to causing the thermal throttling.

In a very comprehensive video by Jonathan Morrison, he has shown in a variety and diverse set of real-life workloads that the thermal throttling doesn't really cause issues with performance. If you are interested, here is the video.

Those thinking that the Costco Citi card will extend the warranty from an Applecare plus warranty should contact Citi first. They extend the manufacturer's warranty. They won't extend an extended warranty, which is what AppleCare is. The manufacturers warranty as provided by Apple is one year.
