Wow....my Macbook Pro is out for delivery! It was in Shanghai late Saturday night and is in Corpus Christi, Texas this morning out for delivery. That is pretty incredible!
What makes you say this? They will extend an extended warranty. Please see the following from the "Your Guide to Protection Benefits" document (I think this is example 4 except that there's a 24 month extended warranty in there as AppleCare):

Man, everyone getting their laptops and here I am getting jealous. Laptop seems to have disappeared into the ether. Still showing clearing customs in Shanghai! What's going on?
Just got the notification from Adorama that it was drop shipped via Apple. Anyone else order from Adorama - curious what the lead time between "drop shipped" and "actually delivered" is?
Just picked up my 2018 15" MBP, base model! My first Mac ever and it seems great so far.
Picked up today my 2.6 i7 at the Apple Store, just the standard version that they also have on the site but I am enjoying it a lot. I come from a late 2011 base MacBook Pro 15 so for me personally it is a huge improvement. Loving the screen, the speed, even the keyboard (though it takes some getting used to it).
The screen and the snappy speed were immediately apparent to me. Really an impressive machine!
Does anyone else 2018 MacBook Pro 15 have a sound when the fans aren't spinning max. Sounds almost like dial up coming from the centre of the laptop.
Is this a worthy enough excuse to just return my laptop within the 14 day time period and potentially exchange it for another?

Shanghai customs will ALWAYS slow down any shipments even a tiny smartphone from there to Canada took me 40 days!
Weird. When I ordered my iPhone X last fall, customs didn't take that long. Here is proof.
Edit: Upon re-reading your post, I think I misunderstood you. Looks like you meant Shanghai customs specifically, not Chinese customs in general. If so, please disregard my comment about my iPhone X clearing customs quickly.
Do I need a specific reason to return the product within the 14 day window, and will they only exchange it for the exact same model or could I say change it from 16 to 32gb ram, at my expense of course?

I think you can return it for a full refund for any reason (unless you damaged it yourself), and then just buy the 32GB ram one. What specs does yours have?
There have been a few reports of this. Some have returned a few times and still get the same noise. Others don't get it. Search around here and you'll see a few threads about it.

My 15inch i9 is out for delivery today.
Felt a little bummed out by the throttling and thermals controversy, but it hopefully shouldn't affect me because of my needs. Excited now

Loving it so far, a world of difference coming from my 2011 MBP.
I don't see why everyone hates the touchbar though. I'm finding it quite useful so far, and the fingerprint sign in is a nice touch too (if you can excuse the pun).
Not noticing a huge difference in the butterfly keyboard compared to my work 2017 13' MBP, but I never really had any issues with it tbh.
I'm a happy camper, a poorer one, but happy nonetheless

Finally got that departure scan!! Out of Shanghai!! Yes! And here is the plane it is on. I was right about the flight number, just incorrect day. UPS 81. Man, I'm good! Also, I'm happy that it is out of the dreaded Shanghai customs! That took forever!
Coming back to the 15", last one was the 2015 rMBP. Went to a Mac Pro and MacBook setup last year but the MacBook is simply not powerful enough for me and the Mac Pro was unreliable (multiple GPU failures). Went with 2.6 i7/32GB/1TB, super excited.
