Hey gang I just wanted to provide a quick update for anyone that is trying to track the shipping windows of the new MBP. I ordered at night on the 20th with a projected date of Aug 1st. I received a tracking number on the 24th with a new target date for delivery on the 27th. It arrived a day early (exciting, but frustrating because I arranged to be home to sign for it on the 27th). Regardless, I was lucky enough that the Fedex driver stopped by when my was home on her lunch break so at least someone was home.
The configuration I ordered is: 13" i5 with TB, 16gb, 1tb hd. Nothing too flashy, but it is replacing my 2013 11" MacBook Air so it was a welcome upgrade. Basically after playing around with my wife's 2017 MBP with retina screen and my 2017 iMac I realized my eyestrain has been because I go back and forth between my iMac and my old MacBook Air with non-retina screen. Yup, after playing with the new MBP for about an hour I realized how much that screen makes a difference.

Anyways thanks for reading this long nonsensical post, but have a great day and I hope you all get your orders early too!!!

Observations:

- Logitech MX Anywhere 2S uses a Logitech Unified USB-A adapter; FUDGE! Gotta think of something or a hub for home is required as I wish to connect the MBP to my TV for home use; this way I can eat and drink on the coffee table without worry of spilling liquids or getting crumbs on this slick puppy.

I have the first generation of this mouse and had no problems at all to connect it to my MBP via Bluetooth. No adapter needed.

Ordered a 15” 2.6/32gig/512 on July 27th. I paid for expedited shipping and got a delivery window between July 31- Aug 2. I was hoping Apple would beat those estimates. But that doesn’t seem to be the case. Order is still in processing stage. Unless Apple ships it today (Saturday) I can get it a day early.. but doubt it.

I ordered my MacBook Pro 15", with an i7 2,6Ghz, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD and Radeon Pro 560X with the help of Apple Store on phone to pay with two different cards, since my limit wasn't high enough on my main card this monday at 4pm, delivered by DHL in Norway at thursday before 12pm with express shipping.

I have the same timing as Mortis360 for on order placed Monday too (15"BTO) and delivered in France. No option though for an expedited shipping.

Why did you opted for the 2017 over 2018? Is it the bugs
Cost. It was $550 less than a 2018. As a college student soon to be medical student, every dollar counts and the extra capability is not needed for me. This is a purchase for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, internet, and other school related programs. I opted to stay with another Apple computer even though costs are higher than comparably spec’d PCs due to the longevity of Apple products and I’m so integrated in the Apple ecosystem.

Seeing as I’ve ordered the same spec...can you check what the exact temp it’s running at please using iStat or something along those lines?

I could try tonight ... yet my results will be skewed. Like I said my apartment is VERY hot. Example ... if it’s 30 celcius outside this summer and almost has every day this July (humidity or not) my apartment is about 5-7 celcius hotter without AC. With 10K BTU AC in 900 sq ft is only 25 celcius after an hour running.

And you know what? Your 2017 will run Office just as well as the 2018 will. I just installed Office 365 on my 2017 nTB MBP and it boots up and runs lightning quick. A second or two and it's loaded. For a $550 savings, I'll take fast over faster any day.

I just ordered the below 2018 13" to replace my maxed out 2016 15".
  • 2.3GHz quad-core 8th‑generation Intel Core i5 processor, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz
  • Retina display with True Tone
  • Touch Bar and Touch ID
  • Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655
  • 16GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory
  • 512GB SSD storage

I plan on getting a desk and an external 4k monitor, which I've never had before. I've missed having a smaller laptop. While the 15" isn't heavy, it's heavy enough for me to think twice whether to take it with me when I leave the house, unlike the 13" which I used to just throw in my bag whether I'd need it or not.

It's been an expensive month. :p

Dispatched: 2-4 business days Delivery: 9 Aug - 13 Aug by Standard Shipping

I’ve got the exact same spec arriving on Tuesday. I feel like a kid at Christmas!

Wow....my Macbook Pro is out for delivery! It was in Shanghai late Saturday night and is in Corpus Christi, Texas this morning out for delivery. That is pretty incredible!
I'm in the same boat today, still in china. What was your original delivery date? if you remember that is....

Good news! Laptop is on the delivery truck and making its way to the UPS Store that I chose. I am going have to this baby tonight for sure! Awesome.

For some weird reason, the laptop had to be transported from SJ > South SF > Sunnyvale, before finally being put on a truck bound to the UPS store that I selected. I don't understand why they didn't just cut out South SF from the route and go directly SJ > Sunnyvale, a lot simpler.

I would love to know the answer to this question just for curiosity's sake.

Anyway, the basically arrived on time so I can't fault either UPS/Apple. It was an interesting experience for this last week or so waiting for my 1st MBP! Thanks for helping me pass the time and stay tuned for additional posts with benchmarks from my new MBP, Gaming PC (X99 build), and my older laptop that I am replacing with this new MBP.

These are the results from Geekbench and Cinebench on my new MBP. I also tried running Blackmagic's disk speed test, but it wouldn't open when I launched it from the Mac App Store. Weird.
Config: Macbook Pro 13"
  • Core i5 8259U - 2.3 Ghz
  • 16 GB LPDDR3 RAM
  • 256 GB SSD

Just received my new MBP i9 today... I know I was doing a lot at the same time trying to get it all set up... But I've never seen the beachball so many times in my life! It was so frustrating... We'll see how things go from here... "Upgraded" from the 2016 2.9GHz.

Anyone get a 13" and regret it and switch to a 15" or vise versa? Cost of my 13 with 16gb and 512 is almost the same as the base model 15. Only difference is the smaller SSD but you get the discrete graphixs, i7 and larger screen .

In France, the 13" speced as you said is 2489€ vs 2799€ for the 15" base model. Wouldn't call this "almost the same" :)

Price aside, the real question is your need. I used to have a 13" when I had also an iMac. Since the MBP is my only computer I went to 15" and never looked back. If I had the money and space, would definitely add an iMac Pro but I don't need it.

So never had regrets but could definitely not use a 13" only at least because of the screen size and graphic card power I need.

First you should define your needs I'd say :)

I’ve just returned a base 15 and just ordered a 13 with 16GB of RAM. I really wanted the extra screen size, but the screen isn’t big enough that I would be fine without an external monitor at my desk. I don’t need the extra performance of the 15 or a DGPU and as much as I wanted to convince myself otherwise, the footprint and weight of the 15 would be limiting for me.

I really, really wanted to like the 15 but it’s just not for me. So I’m going back to the 13 and have picked up a Caldigit TB dock in the meantime to use in the office with peripherals and will dig out an old monitor I have here.

Thanks for tb

Thanks for the replies. I do edit 4k video shot on my phantom 4 pro and do that on a late 2014 iMac 5k currently. This new MacBook pro will be my only computer and figured the 15 would last a bit longer because of the discrete graphics and provide a smoother experience while editing. Yes it's nice to have a smaller footprint device but I would probably not be moving with it unless I travel in vacation twice a year. Also isn't the 15 lighter and smaller than many 15" laptops out there? Doesn't seem like the extra pound would be such an inconvenience.

I've been leaving 2018 13 inch on charge most of the time, but when I'm not the battery is draining fast. About 65% brightness it went down 20% in an hour with one Chrome window open with a video.

This seems like a popular configuration. Not sure why they didn't make it standard as the higher level 13". Just an increase in SSD between the 2 models...

Agree. I can only assume Apple thinks that 1) the price jump between 8/256 and 12/512 would be too much and no one would buy it, and 2) that 16/256 wouldn't be a popular config.

This is just a general question about the new macbook pro line up. I understand that the battery is soldered to the case, so it is not user replaceable. In your experience, how long can you use the battery before replacing it? I understand it must be replaced by apple; Is this expensive? Paying over 2k for machine i want it to last for long years, but don't want to be stuck with a dead battery. I appreciate your feedback on this.

I have been using my MBP 15" 2015 for 3 years now, daily, charging and on battery. So far, didn't notice any difference. Maybe there is, but nothing O can tell from my daily usage.

Same one I’ve ordered and have a couple of weeks wait which is fine, but I thought this would be a popular config, especially now there’s the quad core chip in the 13”. Weird there’s not one 16GB option available off the shelf in the smaller size.

That does seem like a very popular choice, is there not much difference between the i5 and i7? Maybe most people can’t justify the cost to up the processor to the top configuration.
