Sooooooo I bought a 2019 13" Macbook Pro base model. It's coming today. Hear me out. Thanks to teleworking, I was in desperate need of a new laptop. My 2012 MBP got destroyed in an accident two weeks ago and I was stuck. I took the plunge and bought the base 13" for a little under $1000 thanks to a gift card and my education discount. I've had good experience with the butterfly keyboard in the past, and honestly I kind of like it. I have 14 days to return the thing if I hate it. Well, what if I don't? The base model is more than powerful enough for what I do: basic video/photo editing, normal everyday computer things. I don't need too much power, but want the ability to do more if I need to. I was doing everything just fine on my 2012 until two weeks ago. Compared to the 2020 cpu's, how will this thing run in 4-5 years? If the keyboard works out for me (let's just assume that it will and that I won't have problems with it for the sake of this message), will I be ok using this for a few years? Storage isn't an issue...I put everything in the cloud or on external SSD's. I should be happy with this right?

I'm posting this knowing full well that the new 2020 model is right around the corner.

I’m thinking of doing the same, I know the new one is around the corner but everything I’ve read and seen on the 10thGen processors seems to show they run very hot, the air is an example. I don’t want to hear the fan spinning constantly, which I find annoying. Most reports on the current 13 inch pro is the fan rarely spins up. Let me know how it goes. Congrats.

I bought a refurbished 16" MacBook Pro base model from the Apple store online. (Almost bought it from Amazon, but they have a 15% restocking fee, even on damaged returns! Shame on them.)

The box came last night. My first impressions are very positive. It appears to be brand new, no visible flaws. The keyboard, trackpad and screen are all great. Even the touch bar is surprisingly handy. The speakers give a much better sound than one might expect in a laptop, fills the whole room.

The unit arrived with 10.15.3, asking to be updated. Many people here have reported serious problems after updating to 10.15.4, so I will wait for the next release. Let Apple work the bugs out first.

Many people here have also reported issues with overheating, slow-downs, kernal panics, fan noise, etc. I have experienced none of these. Perhaps they are related to 10.15.4. I think some people are pushing multiple external 4K monitors, on machines with maxed out RAM and SSD. Some common programs (like Chrome, Photos, Quicktime) apparently invoke the AMD dGPU, even without an external monitor. That doesn't help. I read that the left USB-C ports generate more internal heat than the right ports. Several people appeared to have seriously overheated and possible damaged their units by running geekbench5? I will not do so.

It looks like a nice machine, I hope to use it for many years.

What box did yours come in?

I updated to 10.15.4 and have experienced no issues. I've been running VMs in both Fusion and Parallels, running some benchmarks, using external devices for restoring content and it's been a breeze. Only initial issue was a scare as the battery had 1 cycle but 89% health. A few discharge/recharge cycles later (key seems to be keep it charging for at least an hour after it's hit 100%) and it's up to 98/99% health.

I was holding out for news on the new 13/14" in May, but I decided to bite the bullet. Working from home for the last 7 weeks has exposed the limitations of my late 2013 13" MBP. Two cores, limited hardware acceleration and 8GB RAM/256 SSD are stopping me from doing some things. And now I need to start using MS Project, which will require me to use Parallels desktop. It's all just too much.

I wanted to get an 8-core, 32GB, 2TB 16". But I found a refurb with 64GB, 2TB and a GPU upgrade to 8GB for €150 less. So a couple of clicks and lots of Euros later, it'll be on my doorstep on Monday. Very much looking forward to most everything about this machine: larger screen, double the single-core performance, quadruple the number of cores, 8x the RAM and SSD :D

My next order will be for a pile of USB-A-to-C converters and a Displayport-to-USB-C adapter...

Nicely done. I came from a 2014 13" and felt the same, hence the upgrade. I got the i9 2.4/32GB/2TB/8GB GPU. My dream config would have been to lower to the 2.3 and take the 64GB RAM, but didn't have one of those on refurb in the UK.

That's precisely it, isn't it? I was hoping for a 2.3GHz-32GB-2TB-4GB GPU, but I ended up with a 64GB + 8GB GPU upgrade just because it was available. Still ended up paying less than my "dream config" new. I was in doubt before about the 64GB, so I'm not complaining. As for the 8GB GPU, meh, whatever. Seen my track record, I might end up in AI or something else outlandish that may require it one day

Let us know how it feels to be using 16inch laptop after having 13inch for a long time.

I waited and waited for the new 13 inch but every month they say next month. So I just purchased the current 13 inch pro with 256gb.

I have till the 18th of may to change my mind, so if the new one comes out by then I might return it. But seeing the way the 10th gen reacts in the Air running hot on small tasks, I’ll probably pass.

Why the hell are the refurbs/education discounted 16"s in canada so much cheaper than the US? I just bought the i7 32gb 1TB 5500m model for 3200 CAD ($2200 USD) from the refurb store... jesus the base i7 is $1700 USD

Well unfortunately my 2.4/32GB/2TB/8GB GPU 16" refurb is going to have to go back......

Because I just bought my dream config of 2.3/64GB/2TB/8GB GPU that appeared on the UK refurb site this morning.

Happy to trade 0.1GHZ of CPU for an extra 32GB of RAM for a £130 extra.

There's been some good configurations on the refurb store today, a fully maxed out 2.4/64/8TB/8GB 5500M appeared this evening but didn't hang around long. Was just under £5k so a saving of over £1k

I'm currently waiting for my spec to come up, it did this morning but only in space grey and I want silver! Looking for a 2.3/32/1TB/8GB 5500M

Yeah they seem to appear at different times as my “new” one only appeared this morning whereas many of the others appeared at about 2am. Silver seem to be in very short supply. I saved £730 with my new config. Fingers crossed no issues when it arrives as the one I currently have is flawless in every way.

Yeah, it keeps popping up, although I've recently come across the 16 inch problems with external displays thread so I'm reconsidering, think keeping the iMac and then picking up a 13 inch pro refurb as my portable option would be better

It's strange how the refurb shop works. I watched it for some time the last week. Sometimes, a whole batch comes up, only to "disappear" within an hour or so. I can't believe batches that include a fully maxed out 16" ("only" 4TB, rest all max) go as quickly as that in a small country like Belgium. On the other hand, the one I ordered (64/2TB/8GB 5500) kept hanging around together with 3 other configs for half a day. When I ordered mine, it did disappear from the shop. It should re-appear on my doorstep tomorrow :p

The most interesting with a new machine is going through what's installed on my current machine and finding stuff I didn't realise I ever installed ("Yeah, I knew I had plans to start music before lockdown took my free time away, but all that stuff installed and never used!?")

We had a similarly high spec one on the UK site, which went quite quickly. Not seen many of the spec of the "replacement" one I ordered either before or since.

I just cancelled my i5 MBA order and placed the 2020 Base MBP 13" adding 16GB of ram. I know its 8th generation but its the new keyboard and looking forward to it. My 2016 13" MBP was one of my favorites for a few years of use.

I think you'll be very happy with the upgrade. I'm typing this on my brand new refurb 16" and the keyboard is great. Just a bit stiffer than my late 2013 13" I used up to this morning. The setup with the separate ESC and finger print recognition keys is great.

I got a few base level 2018-2019 13" MBPs for people in my office and nobody's complaining about performance. The 2019 version, they benchmark as fast as the top level 13" ones because the boost frequencies are about the same. So when you've got a quick thing to do, they perform the same. Cooling is a bit less, so you could get slowdowns when doing sustained loads. But seeing that you were going for an MBA before, this new MBP should not disappoint you at all.

I think im going to order the same exact model over the expensive base 16. Right now im using 2015 12inch, so I should be quiet happy with the upgade.

I bought the new 13" today with the new i7 and 16MB/1TB. I wish it had a 14" display and the nice speakers from the bigger pro, but the product they announced today is still a huge upgrade from my 2015 MBP. The fixed keyboard and an escape key were the only true "must haves" for me. Otherwise I'm fine just getting boring/normal upgrades to the specs of my 5-year-old machine.

I read through many pages of complaints here but most of them don't feel relevant to me. I'll be using the computer docked at my desk to write code, edit photos and play (older) video games, and enjoying the small size & weight when I browse the internet on the couch. I feel like it will be good at all those things.
