I got an M1 MBA but now I need an external monitor for it. Anyone know how much of a drain a 4k monitor would be for an M1 MBA? Should I shoot for a 1440p or 1080p instead or is it not much of an issue for it on resources? (I will be video editing with the external monitor as well)

Considering the M1 powers a 4.5k display in the iMac 24" I'm sure a 4K be fine for the Macbook. I suggest something like the LG 27UN850 which has a good quality/price ratio and gives you a single USB-C for display+charging.

I'll second what @ryanmillercg posted.

I have the older LG 27UL850-W (2019 vs 2020 model N) and my MBA M1 (8/8/8) has no issues driving it at 1440p. No heat, no lags, no stuttering.

Well it's been a little over 2 months since I bought my 16" MBP and I have never looked back since. I had a 2020 13"MBP(Intel) and buying that I made the mistake thinking that 8GB of RAM would be enough for what I wanted to do. Well I traded my 13" in for a 16" with 16GB of RAM and the i9 processor and I have not had a single issue running into not having enough RAM to do my photo retouching and working in Photoshop and the rest of the Adobe Creative Suite while multi-tasking. While there will be those of you that feel that I should have held out for a MBP with Apple Silicon and in time you might be proven correct, but I as of right now am extremely happy with my decision to purchase this.

Got a refurb M1 MBP 13 16gb 512gb and I'm loving it so far! Great battery life, never seems to get hot, and I never hear the fan.

I'm a little confused about external displays. It officially supports one, but what if you don't use the built in screen, then is it more? What's the best hub to use with M1 and external displays?

Here's my old one if anyone needs a lightly used Intel machine.

Just recently got M1 MacBook Pro, probably the only M1 MacBook Pro that has the dying touch bar.
16GB RAM and 1TB SSD should be able to keep it running for years to come, and by then, whatever coming next would be much much better in almost every way.
Only two USB-C ports is tight, but for now I think I should be able to manage it somewhat.
Keyboard itself is amazing, better than iPad Pro Magic Keyboard I might argue.

Just got a "new" 2012 MBP-NON-RETINA , I had one of these a few years ago but got rid of it for a new MacBook, decided to get another one now that I found one for cheap and plan on putting 16gb of ram and a new SSD in it...previous owner was able to get a new battery in it a few months ago.

pog, i have one of those too but mine has a bad battery and is a bit faulty in some areas... i've since replaced it, but if yours is working fine still then it's a really nice system.

pro-tip, be very careful when installing the new ram. these models have a defect of the ram slots and as they age they become very fragile, your new ram might appear to work at first, but if you bump the computer or put it down on a desk it could crash due to the ram slots losing contact, so be very careful.

BTO MBP16 (needed Intel for some Win10-only work programs) - ordered on the 16th August - just received a delay update - delivery ~29th Sept :/

Looks like there are some supply chain issues...

thanks for posting this. I canceled my order from Apple and got a new one with the same specs (32gb/5500/8) for $200 less from an eBay seller. will arrive Saturday.

Yeah, I noticed that today - even the standard MBP 16” isn’t available online for a couple of weeks.

glad to hear this. mine will arive today. we may be the last two. :)
I guess so - I also ordered AppleCare for the first time as this extremely expensive machine (5600M to avoid the external screen overheating issue) may be my last MacBook after a decade of Apple due to the M1 transition.

I need reliable Win10-x86 VM for work - and this does not bode well:

Still cheaper (after inflation) than the IBM PC Portable (1984) that my father bought back in the day.

I am loving mine. After dealing with the weakness of no Boot Camp on M1 for nearly a year, I am happy to put the M1 back into the box and embrace the last of the v8 Interceptors.

Hazel, Omnifocus, TextExpander, and 1Password all run just as fast. :D

I had a 2015 MacBook Pro which I was happy with, but was starting to think about getting a new one in the next couple of years. The screen broke, and I was kind of forced to get a new one early since the cost of repair was not worth it. Bummer I couldn't hold out for the design refresh, but I'm happy with it!
