I went to the local Apple Store last weekend, not even sure if they had the new MBPs in the store for review. I left 45 minutes later with a new MBP 16". The only modification I wanted from the base model was a 1TB drive. At first they said I'd need to order that online, and deliver would be early December. Then they said they had one in stock, at that store. I wanted Space Grey, but they only had silver, so I bought it anyway. I am going from an early 2018 13" MBP. At the time I bought my 2018 MBP, I opted for the 13" for the much lower cost of the base model at that time, knowing it was a stopgap solution until they came out with a newly designed 15". Prior to that I had a 15" from 2012. Around the time they came out with the 16" in 2019, there were rumors then of a newer design in the works (even before the announcement of Mac chips I think). Anyway, I am very glad to have moved away from the 13". I forgot how much I appreciate the larger screen size, especially for my eyes (I have decent eyesight, but am getting a bit older these days). Also, having multiple windows open on the 13" was always a drag. Speed was not much of an issue for what I do (even when running Logic Pro with several plugins). TBH, I absolutely don't need the crazy speeds of this new laptop, and would gladly have sacrificed it for a 16" with an M1 (standard) chip, but that option is not available (not surprisingly), so I ponied up the extra $$$ for the larger screen. I don't think I would have wanted the other compromises of a MacBook Air anyway, though.
I am hella glad I bought this new laptop, even though I struggled for the first few days about whether I'd been stupid for spending so much money on a laptop. I really hope this laptop is better than the last two I had. My 2012 MBP had three logic boards replaced (I think due to overheating--it was the top of the line laptop at the time due to my more substantial use of Photoshop at that time). My 2018 laptop had the crappy, buggy, awful keyboard, so there was rarely a time when all the normal keys were working simultaneously (I had to blow out dust and debris, and even now, the s, o, p, and a couple of number keys work, but they don't move right). Also, the Touch Bar was cool, and I did use it, but probably one out of every three times I'd reboot, the Touch Bar simply didn't show up, so I'd have to do a cold reboot. And strangely, when I shut down that laptop, it would often reboot on its own when I closed the lid, so if I didn't have it plugged in, I would go to restart, and it would be dead, no battery at all. Charging worked on some but not all the thunderbolt ports. Lots of little glitches, pretty quickly after I bought it. Not cool.
