Going full stupid May have paid off! My laptop shipped and should arrive on June 6th! Now, if they announce the M2 MBP, I guess I can sell this one still in box. But I’m hoping any announcement of an M2 16” MacBook Pro will be for delivery next year.Yeah, you might as well go full. Let's see, current M1 Pro/Max MacBooks were already delayed months before because of the logistical issues dealing with covid related component shortages, in addition to China's Zero Covid policy preventing factories from operating at full capacity. So now I guess Apple can magically spin up new factories with all new manufacturing processes at-will, to produce an entirely new MacBook when they currently lack the manufacturing output to meet the demand of the current MacBook /s . Make it make sense.

Shanghai is under COVID lockdown, but TSMC is still running. It’s possible they can just toss the new SoC into the same shell.
Thanks for being a sounding board.
Mostly lockdowns if you haven’t caught up with the news lately. It seems that the supply of base model Macbook Pros, both 14 and 16 inch are dwindling. BTO delivery times are worse. I got my BTO 16” with 32 GB of RAM in November last yearI have 16" MBP in Space Gray that I want to exchange for Silver. I've been checking Best Buy's website regularly. I noticed that for past week, they're Sold Out of their various 16" MBP configurations. I just checked Apple - 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD model, delivery shows Jul 18 - Aug 1.
Is the limited inventory of 'stock configurations' a result of the lockdowns, or is it possible there could be a new 16" released next month?
Thanks for info. I thought most of the delays were for BTO/custom configs. I didn't realize the full extent of the delays. I'm surprised Costco has most of the base configs in stock. I missed the Costco offer from a week ago when the 16" 512 GB was $200 off.Mostly lockdowns if you haven’t caught up with the news lately. If you’ve decided not to wait and are looking for a new MacBook Pro, you might need to wait some time. Consumer reports are pointing towards lower stock levels in the supply chain, with many Apple fans being asked to wait until August before picking up their new macOS-powered laptop.
While there is no single report or detail that confirms the issue, there are a growing number of Apple fans looking to buy a new MacBook Pro that are reporting long lead times to have their machines shipped. Add up all those data points, and the story becomes much clearer, as Michael Potuck explains:
"We started seeing more reports of the same and even the stock 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models were pushed into mid-July. It’s now a few weeks later and the supply issues are continuing. The stock 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro notebooks are shipping as late as July 28. And direct from Apple, if you upgrade any component, like the M1 Pro/Max chip, RAM, or storage, the shipping time slips to as late as August 8."
On one hand, this has been expected. The consumer electronics industry has suffered from a shortage of supply to customers for some time now; with factors including the worldwide silicon chip shortage, the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, and the general slowing down of various economies all coming into play.
Apple has weathered this far more than other manufacturers - no doubt due to Apple’s size in the marketplace that demands more attention is paid to it compared to much smaller manufacturers chasing the same components.
On the other hand, Apple can’t change the fundamental laws of supply and demand. Once any backlog or goodwill has been used up, Tim Cook and his team will return to a level playing field and face the same challenges as other manufacturers. Which I suspect is what is happening here.
A mix of a new design of laptops (the first big change to the MacBook Pro platform since 2016) and the move to the ARM-based Apple Silicon offering better performance and endurance compared to the direct Intel equivalent, has increased the demand for the MacBook. With more demand on one side and reduced supply on the other, the delay from purchase to delivery for the average consumer can be measured in months.
Neither is it just the MacBook Pro affected, although its popularity means it is the most noticeable. The new Mac Studio and Studio Display are showing similar months-long delays, and while the standard iMac models can be picked up almost immediately, any upgrades to RAM or Storage will push delivery back to, you guessed it, August.
Maybe it’s better to wait till August… after all, Apple is set to announce new plans for the whole Mac family - including the MacBook Pro - at next month’s WWDC with the potential for new hardware before the end of the year.
I finally received my 16'' M1 Max/64GB/1TB on Tuesday May 31st. Ordered on March 16th. 76 days or 2 months and 15 days. I am glad I waited. I almost cancelled thinking I should wait on M2 but the world is so insane lately who knows if M2 will be delayed or similarly next to impossible to find like the M1. Either way the wait was completely worth it. This machine is amazing.
I run multiple windows VMs at a time. Each has VSCode, VS2022, IIS, multiple custom windows services, implementing and debugging WPF apps, web apps, a giant no-code platform I architect plus have a million things happening on macOS too. Multiple monitors plugged in. It's only been a few days but I haven't heard the fan or had this thing stutter for a second. So impressed and excited to really get to work on this thing and see what it can handle.
I haven't met a machine that really handles my workload without stuttering, loud fans, crashes and issues. So far this machine has handled everything without an issue.
My only complaint so far is I cannot get SQL Server 2019 running. Right now I am just pointing to remote Azure Dbs but would really like to have everything local if I can just to handle any scenario. Excited about MS announcing all the ARM support coming to VS and other tools but have not heard a word about SQLServer in any of that. Oh well, life will find a way... just wish it was the way I wanted it! =] OK, apologies for the long post.
Technically my laptop arrived on May 31st, but FedEx was playing delivery shenanigans. Manufacture date is May 23rd.My 16” MBP is sitting in Memphis, TN according to FedEx for arrival on June 1st. It looks like the M2 MacBook Pro has been delayed until mid-2023, and may be a slightly modified M1 anyhow. Even the iPhone 14 is getting a stopgap processor instead of what Apple intended to ship.
soooo glad I didn’t cancel my order. The true m2 16” MBP is likely slipping to early 2024, and may be called an M3.
Exactly why I still have my 2019 i9 16"I just received and set up my new M1 MacBook Pro this evening. Only to be disappointed that I cannot install VirtualBox on my new M1 Mac. This sucks so much! I purchased a Mac because I have been a professional Graphic Designer since 2004 and it's pretty much the standard. But I like to install and run both Windows and Linux systems in VirtualBox for fun, to run games and other misc. software. Now I find out that I cannot do so. Very disappointing! I guess I don't have much choice nowadays. Either I purchase a Mac for the work that I do, or I purchase a PC for fun. I hate this switch away from Intel processors.
Are your windows VMs x86 or ARM?I finally received my 16'' M1 Max/64GB/1TB on Tuesday May 31st. Ordered on March 16th. 76 days or 2 months and 15 days. I am glad I waited. Well my old VMs were x86 cause they were running on intel. Now with the M1 all you can run as far as windows goes is the ARM version so I have windows 11 ARM now.Are your windows VMs x86 or ARM?
SQL is available as a container.... I run it on macOS using docker, and in Linux as a container. Can it run on M1 via docker, or in a Linux VM/Container?
Ah OK, I'm not too "up" on the x86 emulations options on M1.Well my old VMs were x86 cause they were running on intel. Now with the M1 all you can run as far as windows goes is the ARM version so I have windows 11 ARM now.
I have heard of the docker thing, would need to research it. You run SQL Server in a docker container on ARM?
