A bit off-topic but for UK users, John Lewis currently has 14" BTO M1 Max MBPs in stock for next-day delivery. Can't recall seeing BTO models available outside Apple before.

BIG thanks for the heads up. Had this exact spec ordered from apple and it was estimating delivery for early August. Will be collecting it tomorrow now!

Very have a BTO 14", not a bad price. Ive found a few retailers are considerably cheaper than going direct to Apple. I got a great discount on a 14" 10/16 16gb 1tb, should arrive tomorrow.

Was going to wait for the M2 MBA, but got to looking at the 14” M1 MBP and noticed I could get a hold of one at my local BestBuy in the next couple of days, so….. Anyone looking to pick up an M1 8/8 core MBA with 8gb of RAM and 512gb SSD?

Built-to-order: semi-custom, a configuration that differs from the standard Apple catalog offering. Generally this involves processor, disk, or memory options/upgrades beyond whatever Apple marketing thought would be the big revenue producers. They tend to be built in fits and starts when enough orders pile up, which means insanely long lead times. Here lately, it has required a stroke of luck to find a BTSEO that was "built to somebody else's order" that just happens to meet the specs that an actual customer wants. But it can happen. (;-)

I’ll kick myself but what is BTO?

What he said. Got mine today, very happy. One thing that I noticed straight away was the speakers. How a laptop can sound this good with this much bass is just crazy.

The 16" M1 Max I ordered on April 21 to replace the DOA unit they sent me arrived on Jun 9. Not terrible all things considered. I'm pretty pleased with it so far. Dead silent, great performance, great battery life, great screen. The notch is really goofy, but I hate it significantly less than the notch on my iPhone. I'm coming from an i9 MBP, and while that is still a great machine, this one is worth the net cost of upgrade for me.

UK buyer here. Ordered the M2 MacBook Pro 13” - 1TB SSD / 24GB Ram on 17 June.

Expected delivery date - 25 July - 2 Aug.

I was hoping delivery would be sooner.

Anybody in a similar situation for the same spec?

Mine came in 3 days earlier than promised, I saw the UPS guy walking up the driveway, but was not fast enough to get to the door before I heard the cringe-inducing THUD as he unceremoniously tossed it onto the porch. Fortunately, Costco and Apple's more than sufficient packaging kept the big MBP safe.

Listening to Bocelli's Sacred Arias right now and absolutely floating on this utterly intoxicating sound.

From a laptop.

I ordered a base 14.2 inch MBP with 1TB in early June 2022, but the delivery estimate for store pickup was late August! I left the order in Apple's system while I watched other locations to see if I could get my hands on one. Yesterday, I found the mid-level 14.2 inch MBP (more cores) which comes standard with 1TB for not much more than I was about to spend on the base model, so I snapped it up. I canceled my base 14.2 inch MBP order in the Apple store once I got the text from Microcenter telling me my MBP was ready for pickup.

I picked it up in the store today. They offered to sell me one of their warranties but I said I'd pick up Applecare online later. Normally, I'd consider doing a few unboxing photos, but Apple stole that time from me with a convoluted AppleCare+ ordering fiasco. I tried ordering AC+ online BEFORE unboxing my MBP, but no matter how many times I tried, it refused to let me buy AC for the serial number of the machine I just bought.

I called Apple about this and just when it seemed like it would be solved, the call dropped. Finally I found on Apple's support page that I could order AC+ using "About this Mac->Support" on the new machine, so I fired it up and had succeeded in purchasing AC+ in under 5 minutes. Meanwhile I got emails from Apple that they were trying to call me back. Not. gonna. happen. If you ain't in my contacts, I ain't answering... unless you wanna sell me a car warranty. Then I'll answer and tell you I wanna buy an extended warranty for my 1911 Ford Model T.

I was impressed with the speed setting up my new MBP. A faster machine makes everything faster, including logging in to iCloud, installing stuff, initial setup, etc.

This machine replaces my over 10 year old MBP so that now the oldest machine in the house is my 2016 era MBA which can run the latest OS for just a little while longer.

My first foray into Apple computers was a 2005-ish Intel Mac Mini, which I still have lying around somewhere. Over the years, I thought I wanted to keep running Intel so I could multi-boot and virtualize to run other OS's. I've completely lost interest in other OS's.

20 days with my new 16” MBP - 64GB RAM, 8 TB SSD, m1 Max.

Zero regrets. I‘ve mostly forgotten the notch exists. Silly battery life - got just shy of 24 hours run time on one charge doing C++/Objective C development and video editing. Forgot where I had left the power adapter after a week of not even thinking about charging. Feels good to have 2 hours left at 10% charge. Fan only comes on when charging, it seems, and still barely audible. While coding in Sublime Text, my remaining battery actually increased while I was typing.

Ventura is magical, but not quite baked. Black magic SSD speeds are slower than expected...5200 MB/sec read/write. I thought it was supposed to be 7GB/sec…maybe Ventura beta is slower? Stage manager isn’t stable…windows open but aren’t visible.

Only complaint: I traded in a 13” m1 MBP with 8 GB RAM/512GB SSD. This machine doesn’t FEEL faster. Maybe I’m jaded, but i thought I would be more excited. The 13” was always out of memory, but it still did everything I asked it to, quietly and competently. I just couldn’t open multiple VM and Docker containers. The 16” doesn’t seem faster. Compiles don’t feel faster. Renders in FCP aren’t shockingly faster. Laying tracks in Logic Pro feels effortless, but not amazing.

The base M1 felt like a miracle compared to my 2017 Intel i9 with 64 GB RAM. i always build my containers from scratch /source code when there’s a version update. OpenSSL, CMake, Ninja, Boost, LLVM with the fans on the i9 turning into a space heater for an hour. The M1 took that down to a quiet 0 RPM 22 minutes. The 16“ does it in 20 minutes. 10% faster for $5.5K more isn't a great bargain. It would take a 5 minute container rebuild to impress me…maybe the Ultra in a 20” laptop with 128 GB RAM for $10K? Wrap it up!

I couldn’t/wouldn’t want to wait any longer, but a fully loaded M2 MacBook Air with 24 GB RAM/2 TB SSD for $2500 + AppleCare would compare well in most circumstances. The August delivery date is a step too far though.

BTW, I do miss the Touch Bar a great deal. I think the impatient whiners killed a good feature…just like they killed the OG HomePod. This keyboard is top notch, but scrubbing timelines on the Touch Bar was perfect. I wish Apple would offer the Touch Bar as an option, or on a Magic Keyboard.

The laptops are so potent that it’s difficult to justify a desktop.

Apple Silicon is so good, even in base configurations, that it will be a while before a Mac impresses again. The bar is high.

Just ordered a new MBP 16" M1Max/64/4TB 32C GPU, this time not from Apple since the waiting times are insane, and it should be here in a few days. I wonder if it will be able to replace my 10 core 32 gb iMac Pro fot music making.
