I received my refurbished MBP 15.4" 2.4GHz two days ago, and it's now the love of my life  I'm so impressed that it's refurbished, it looks brand new and everything was packaged so nicely. It is my first Mac so I'm still getting used to it, but it's been a breeze so far. It took less than 48 hours to get here, too! So impressed.

Now all I'm curious about is Freeware, and what's the best stuff to download, if any. Feeling lost without Photoshop too.

Does anyone use OpenOffice.org? I was going to purchase Microsoft Office '08, but then someone told me about open office

I've been considering the same refurbed MacBook Pro, but I'm a bit leery of the fact that it might be as much as 10-months old. Could you do me a favor and go to the following site and enter your serial number and and see when it was originally built:

http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html

If you check your serial number, could you post back to this thread with how old it is? Thanks.

I got mine 10 days ago; my very first Mac! Thanks to some "peer pressure" from my friends I decided to go take the plunge, and boy has it paid off :)

Meanwhile, that joy has since been replaced by a slowly bubbling frustration thanks to useless customer care calls to Dell...so much for "XPS support"

Placed an order for the :apple: 17" Macbook Pro 2.8 Ghz w/ 500 gb 7200 rpm harddrive and the antiglare screen. :D

It's been stating:

Estimated Delivery Date (Subject to change) 24 Aug 2009 (Subject to change)

Current Delivery Status In Transit to Customer - Shipment on Schedule 20 Aug 2009

Anyone got an idea of when I can expect to have an actual tracking no. ?

It should be delivered monday, but I don't know if I can trust the date since I haven't got an assigned carrier yet.

What do you guys think ?

Finally got an assigned carrier!!!! - TNT it is. It's due to delivery tuesday!!! :D

Well, it is for work. I'm a Systems Architect. I bleed Blue, but I am tired of having to work on my own workstation when I could be billing clients to work on theirs. This is going to be an adventure.

My Telesales rep gave me about 800 bucks off the deal before taxes so I could not resist. Amex is gonna be happy with the finance charges for a coupla months, lol...

I know AIX and Solaris. Am I gonna have any trouble with Darwin?

Wow. When you go new, you go new big, eh?

Congrats.

No. You're going to love it. I used to play on RS6000 AIX boxes, Digital (Compaq) Tru64 boxes, Solaris, you know, Unix. Then wandered off into Linux for several years. Firing up the shell was like coming home. It's Unix. BSD Unix, plus some season and spice.

Hey guys i just bought my MBP 13" 2.53 ghz on Thursday but didnt open it til today..

So far i am very happy with it. It looks great, performs great, and battery life is awesomeee... Coming from a hp tablet laptop 12.1... this was a biggg huge step up. God that laptop was ****** and slow after a month.

Only have 2 questions.

1) is 4gb the max i can get on my macbook? or can i add like another 2-4gbs?

2) With macs will the notebook start slowing down with more harddrive space used? Reason i ask is that i only had like 212 gb when i first started my mac and it says im suppose to have 250.. does the os x take the much gb? I dont wanna delete any of the features either. I prob will have less then 200gb alrdy because im dling wow right now. Im somewhat ocd and having less then 160gb will kinda bother me soo i might upgrade to 500gb if it does come to the worst.

I trust you paid Apple's expedited shipping fee? I detest FedEx Ground, they could foul up a ham sandwich. But paying the $18 (or so) for Air made all the difference in the world.

Nope. No ablity to upgrade shipping on a CTO MBP according to Telesales and Enterprise Sales Support.

Reason being, Apple has a fixed contract with FedEX whereby Apple pays X dollars per unit shipped (based on projections) at the beginning of the quarter. If they stay under that projection, no additional fees from FedEX to Apple. If they go over, they pay a per unit premium on each unit shipped over the projected.

Anyway, since their contract addresses International shipments, and FedEX US cannot hold the APAC FedEX business unit to the same standards, all shipments go as "economy" if they originate from APAC. I begged them to take more money to get it here quicker, but they refused, lol...

Yeah, I did my homework. I spent almost 40 hours in my Apple store testing and playing. I actually spent two solid days working from the store on a floor model. I had to have them open up outbound VPN on their firewall for me so I could work. That was the ultimate test, I was able to do my job without fail. I still had my Dell in my bag with me thought just in case...

Ain't Mac grand???

Here's a question. My son turns 6 in one hour. (Can't believe it) Anyway, I got my first computer on my 6th birthday (Commodore 64) what would be the idea Mac to get him? An IMac? A Mac Mini? Obviously something inexpensive but durable. He will really only play games and maybe nick.com or something.

I think your MBP can go up to 8GB of RAM. It probably has 2-2GB sticks in it now so you'll have to remove something to increase it. System Profiler (in the Utilities folder) will tell you exactly what's in there now. A hard drive in a Mac isn't any different than a hard drive in a PC in that a certain amount of space is lost to formatting and they're never as big as stated. My G4 iMac has a 80GB HD (74.4 formatted) and I've only used 24.7GB so I can't really advise on filling it up, but I've always heard that you should leave 10% free. If you go less than 10% you start having problems. HTH.

while you're waiting for it.

i'm hoping tmrw
