I ordered it online because I thought that was the only way I could get the academic discount. But my friend said that (albeit, a couple of years ago) she went into an Apple store, showed her ID, and got the discount and her MacBook Air. Is this true?

Yea, you can get the education discounts from the Apple store with proper ID.

Oh, that's a real bummer! I can only hope (and with all probability be utterly delusional) that the delay is being caused by a minor upgrade to the MacBook Pro line...

New to tha party!

Just got my macbook pro with snow leopard. All I can say is I haven't been able to put it down for more than a few mins to get a drink or eat. I love this thing. And knowing that I saved almost 700 bucks by going through my school makes me love it even more.:apple:

Ordered MBP on Sept 27th

I ordered my MBP 15" 2.8 ghz, anti-glare screen with 500gb 7200 rpm.

I did get educational discount (and yes you can get the discount in the store) but they did not have the upgraded hard drives in store.

Shipped on the 28th of September and has always said to arrive on October 2nd. But it still shows it is in Shanghai CN. I checked the fedex ground delivery for today and it's not there. I called Fedex and they said it was held up at customs but when through last night and should arrive in the US today and to me by Monday. According to Fedex Rep. I called yesterday to the Apple rep to see if they could upgrade my shipping...they couldn't and said it would arrive by the 7th of October - Tuesday.

Bought the 13" MacBook Pro (2.26GHz / 2GB DDR3 RAM / 160GB HDD) from the Apple retail store yesterday. Not my first mac, as I have a year old iMac. Got this for Uni, its excellent. Like it more than my iMac :apple:.

New Purchase- Questions

Hey!

I've always been a iMac and MBA person. I Decided to go MBPro since it will be my desk replacement and mostly do photo/audio editing.

I don't mind purchasing refurbs - so looking through the Apple site I found one I liked.

It is a 17", 2.93 dual core with 128SSD (i MUST have a SSD ever since using one in my MBA) - internal space is not an issue in my setup.

QUESTION - being unfamiliar to Macbook Pros - because this has a 2.93 cpu in it - does that make it an older model? I get the feeling it is? But I see no difference compared to the 3.06 versions? Except maybe the express card?

Unfortunately I couldn't find on the Apple site a list of what processors/combos are for what generation of MBPro.

Any help? thanks!

BTW i DID already order it - but it won't ship until the work week...

UPDATE - found all the info on another site listing in detail the various models - so ya mine is the early 2009 version. no probs.

After 4 months of deciding if I should purchase a Macbook pro or not and if it was worth it. I found myself purchasing one 3 weeks ago. My friend gave me a good deal and I could not turn down the offer.

I got myself a 15.4" macbook pro, 2.8ghz.

I am still pretty lost. Only thing I know how to work is mailbox, safari, and thats pretty much it. lol

learning new stuff everyday.

First Mac

Well guys, I'm really excited, just ordered my first Mac. It's a 13" MacBook Pro, 2.26 GHz, 4GB DDR RAM, 250 GB HDD.
After using PC for many years, I believe that it is time for a change, and I couldn't find any better change than a Mac. :apple:
It'll probably arrive next week, can't wait!

I cut the cord with Microsoft

I am now a complete MacTard. I just ordered the Macbook Pro 17" from BTO with the 7200 RPM HDD and anti-glare screen. I stayed with the 2.8 GHz processor as it's plenty fast enough for what I want. Also ordered a 1TB time capsule to replace my Airport Extreme n router. We also have an Intel based iMac and two iPhones. The iMac will be updated to Snow Leopard from Tiger and both will (hopefully) back up seamlessly to the Time Capsule.

My 17" HP laptop will be put out to pasture after 4 years of faithful service. While the HP hardware has been totally reliable and trouble free, I can't say the same for the Microsoft operating system and I'm running XP. The constant updates from Redmond and Norton got tedious. I was never going to get sucked into Vista and I won't trust Win 7 for a good two years either.

This completes my move away from the PC world at home. I simply tired of the hassles of living in the Windows world. I'm happy to pay the "Apple Tax" and live in a closed ecosystem if I can reclaim large portions of my personal time. Yeah, the choices are more limited but, I don't really care because the H/W & S/W choices tend to be very very good inside the Apple bubble.

No more researching 10 brands of PC and agonizing over price/performance/quality. No more sifting through a smorgasbord of 20 applications for every purpose. Instead, I only have to chose a single brand of computer and maybe three tiers of S/W products for beginner, advanced, and pro...for instance iLife, Final Cut Express, or Final Cut Pro.

And no one does industrial design and man-machine interface better than Apple. The H/W, S/W, and OS just make life easier for the average Joe. And, I'm just an average Joe. Add in Apple support like Genius bars and in store training along with web tutorials and the Apple value proposition begins to look pretty damned strong.

I have drunk the Kool-Aid and it is good.

Buggernuts. UPS didn't have my full address, they had the street name but not the number, so I have to go collect it between 6 and 8pm. Sadface.

Just ordered my new uMBP 17'' as my old MBP died on me. Luckily my insurance covered it :D

Now I just hope that Apple won't release new MBPs later that about a month from now. Because then I'm no longer able to return mine within 14 days and get a new one.(yeah, estimated delivery will be in 10 long days )

I just bought my new MBP!

I never thought the day would come, but it did. I've been needing a new laptop for about 4 months and I have been researching tirelessly. I've always been a pc guy and have really enjoyed building pc's in the past. Unfortunately my wife is a graphic designer and she has been a die hard mac user since college. During my search for a new laptop I had some issues with my desktop and decided to take the plunge since it would be better for the "household" using one type of OS. Also, until we can afford a Mac Pro, it will be nice to have a back up from her older MBP. Besides, I'm all about build quality and the MBP is well superior to ANYTHING else on the market. Of course you have to pay for that quality, but I'm getting over it.

The crossover hasn't been that bad since I've used my wifes computer in the past. I also changed the "Macintosh HD" button name to "My Computer" to make the transition a little easier. On the bad side, I'm still having trouble getting WMP files to play through quicktime, but I should be able to get it running eventually. Also, my working surface is a little high that I have the mbp on so the edge of the computer gets a little uncomfortable when typing. A rolled edge would have been nice, but it would have taken away from the finish. Also, I miss having the taskbar on the bottom when I open up new windows in Firefox for quick access.

But all in all, I really love my new 13" MBP 2.53 GHz. I still have a lot to learn, but I appreciate having the resource of this site at my disposal.

question!

I just bought my macbook pro and its the new unibody style with the 9600 gpu.

I've been reading posts on the forum about gpu failure in select mbp models. I guess my question is do the most current macs have this problem???? If so why would they keep selling them.
