They do not actually charge the card until it ships. they just put a hold on the amount to make sure when it ships that you have that much available on your care. You can cancel at any time prior to shipment. you can make changes anytime prior to shipment....

Thanks, that's how I thought it worked.

How come no one is getting the 8 GB RAM?
I'm sure someone, somewhere, is.

The cost for third-party DDR3 RAM, 2x4GB = $700. That really is the cheapest you can find it right now. I'm sure in six months that will drop by at least $200, and maybe as much as $400.

Apple sells it for $1000 (or $900 edu). That's crazy talk, but at least they have it in stock!

hi,
bit off topic but does anyone know if they will have the ATI card in store or is it only and online BTO thing?

cheers

och, i am not happy!
I was waiting for ages for the new imac, and read how everyone was dissapointed, so i was not sure if should get one....
and now i read this one, and i know for sure i am going to buy one! My credit card is going to scream!!:)

well, i get the education discount, so am getting the 2.93 for basically price of the 2.66!!

off shopping tommorow, so does anyone know if you can get the edu discount in store?

Anyway, just to say thanks for persuading me that i dont need to go on holiday this year and that i need the new iMAC instead!!!!!

Just got me an older one... something to tide me over until snow leopard comes installed on the next bump (hopefully this fall).

24" 2.8GHz 2600 HD Pro = 1,199

1260 w/ tax :D

I'm sure something better will come out in the next year. I'll buy the "new" one then. I couldn't resist this deal.

I am waiting for the store to get the iMacs, then I am going to purchase my first Mac ever. I am going with the 2.93 GHz model, extremely excited, as I am getting a student discount. Buying at www.m-store.at.

How did you get it for 1199? I see it as 1299...unless you got the refurb..

I've ordered this morning the 2.93ghz model at the reseller in my city, next week they sad :) Hopefully!

Whats the diff between a refurb and the clearance one?

.... the box.

I dont care about the box :D

Yes, I got the refurb.

Oh, I wasn't putting your purchase down, just wondering if you got a discount I didn't know about :).

Also, I believe that the clearance imac is "new" in the sense that it hasn't been purchased and sent back for repair; whereas, the refurb has. It doesn't make any difference to me really. I would likely get the applecare with it just to be safe, so the refurb makes more sense. Although, SOME people are saying when they ordered the clearance imac, Apple changed their order to the newest model comparable to the one they ordered...

I'm not sure I'd even want them to "upgrade" me to the new one, some people are saying they are seeing slower performance. But, the official benchmarks have not come out, so I can't say.

Thanks for the reply!

No you are right. The resale value of the "new" is slightly higher since you can sell it later with its original box, but other than that, there's no real difference.

I dont know about the 'upgrade" from the clearance one. I think a couple people might be lucky, but I called the apple store here in MD today and they said the old 24" 2.8's that havent been sold yet are listed at 1499 in store. Thats 100 more than online. And they are in stock, so I dont think there's any need to replace it with something else.

An even better (greedy) deal would be to get the student discount on the clearance or refurb imac. Very unlikely, but I wonder if they would do it if you call to place an order, since the option is not available online.

Well If they are really upgrading people from the clearance ones i'd swap in a second. I'm not going to take a 100 dollar bet on it though. Theres no student discount on refurbs unfortunately.

I dont really mind. I'm basically just buying this so I can hold off until sometime in the next year when the next model comes and has 10.6 installed for free.

Yea, I hear ya...and like I said, I'm not sure I'd want to be upgraded until I've seen some benchmarks that prove the new ones aren't slower...

I'll likely go with the refurb, that will guarantee I wont be upgraded. I don't mind just "leopard" and the hardware is the same anyway.

Yes I am 100% sure it was 2.93GHz and not 2.66Ghz. I actually did more testing than stated before, I actually was amazed and tested the same old model against a different 2.93Ghz model and got almost same results +/- had to be seconds. I then tested a different old 2.8GHz model against the new 2.93GHz and near identical results. I also tested against MacPro 15" unibody not sure the speed but it also took around 5 minutes to complete, but I did not test this one directly against the new iMac as far as starting both rendering at the same time.

Yikers! Doesn't sound good!

Still I am very pleased with the old model I got last night, but like I said my luck Snow Leopard will require 2or3GB of memory and 320GB hard drive space.

Well, I doubt that. Besides, if it takes more RAM you can get 4GB of RAM these days for $50. You may want to do that anyway as you're photo editing.

Yes, I got the refurb.

Clearance has never been sold, while a refurb was sold and then returned. It may not have even been opened, but once it leaves Apple it can't be sold as new.

Nothing wrong with a refurb - I just picked up a 20"/2.66 for $999. Excellent deal for my kids....
