*pocket computer. Considering we all spend a majority of our free time on the devices, you can see why we don’t mind. But I agree, it is getting too expensive.

I think you will find out that consumers will still upgrade to the iPhone X, but they are less likely to upgrade annually, given the price point of what these iPhones cost and there overall monthly payment, assuming they don't pay in full.

When you complain about the price seems like you couldn’t afford it.

I can afford it and I have it but I still think it’s ridiculously priced for a phone. ‍♀️

^^ This I have 4 days left to return mine and the cost is the only reason. Pointless though the ship has sailed, this is now what Apple will charge and I'd guess the new Samsung will creep up in price when it launches next year.

On one hand there is nothing I own that gets more use so I have never minded spending the money, on the other hand though £1150 i just insane really.

I don’t mind spending the money but the X in my opinion is like a Rolls Royce body with a Chevy interior. Like a Rolls Royce kit car. Has a great engine but...

Returned my iPhone X after trying it out for 2 weeks. In my opinion, for £999, it is far from perfect. I found the following:
  • The battery life wasn't great, it lost around 10% overnight on standby which I thought was the crown jewel of iPhone's - their great standby battery. It could get me through the day, at least, but wasn't anything better than Androids or previous iPhones.
  • FaceID as a 1st gen is not reliable or fast enough (to replace the speed of TouchID), and was inconvenient when the phone was on a desk or not looking at you and having to alter your position or pick the phone to use it, big no-no. And the thing is that this WILL be made 4x faster and have a wider viewing angle in the next iPhone, so I feel as if I was testing a beta product.
  • iOS 11 is rubbish, the notification system is a complete disaster and the well-documented issues with iOS 11 making it a significant downgrade on not only iOS 10 but on Android Nougat/Oreo.
  • No fast-charger included in the box (having to pay £75 for the Apple certified parts is a punch in the face after paying £999)
  • The camera is great but the portrait mode on both front and rear is abysmal, even my partner's 7s has a far better portrait mode, and really was the straw that broke the camel's back for me, it just screams incompetence and a rushed product. I know it's a software thing mostly but come on.
  • The notch just seems like an inconvenient compromise and that Apple are dressing it up as a 'design choice', I bet in the next iPhone the notch will be reduced.
  • The screen is stunning, but it's not any better than the flagships out there - my Galaxy S6 has a higher resolution and pixel density, so it's not a game-changer for me
  • I loved the gestures and navigating around the interface - this is probably the best thing it does and I will miss it on any other phone I go to.
If you're going to start charging £800-1000 for a phone - it needs to be perfect. Not a beta, not a 1st gen untested innovation, you need to nail it otherwise people will get buyers remorse - it's what has happened to me and Apple lost a customer.

What'd make the iPhone 'worth' £999 (because no phone ever will be worth that much) would be 4x faster FaceID, 120hz display (Ala iPad Pro), USB-C, fast-charger included, better battery, and the software needs a massive overhaul. iOS 10 + Android's notification system would be perfect.

I can afford a lot of things I don't buy, because I think they aren't a good value for their cost. But I also don't complain about the price, I just don't buy it. A company can set a price point where ever they want, and it will affect how many people buy. In the case of the X, it was one of several factors that led to me buying non-Apple this round. Very glad I did.

I’m guessing 95% of the people here can’t afford it. But ask anyone and they all sound like millionaires buying fine wine.

I complain about price because it’s too high. That’s all. Prices are getting out of control, not beyond reach. It’s a choice.

All these “rich people” seem to think it’s a good idea to perpetually pay $50 a month for the rest of their lives just to have the latest phone.

So you can afford it, but 95% of the people here can't? That's quite an opinion you have there about others.

I have turned off TrueTone after a couple of minutes, but of course this does not fix the viewing angles issue... I have no experience with other OLED panels, but if those are even worse, then "no thanks". The colors/contrast etc. on my iPhone 7 are already great, I see no real difference compared to the iPhone X to be honest.
I returned my X for the 8 plus for exactly the same reason as you. I saw no difference. My son has the 7 plus and I preferred using his. I hated the narrower screen and don't get me started on the notch and face id. I really missed the home button most and I don't think I would. The apple genius said they've had quite a few swaps like this from people thinking the X was meant to be a plus sized iphone when it isn't when viewing videos etc. A lot of apps just displayed weirdly too. Love my 8 plus and I saved a lot of money too.

Same reasons why I and most of my co workers returned the X. My wife and daughter were going to order the X but after playing with mine they decided against it. They didn’t like it. Returned my X went with the 8 plus and got them the 8 plus as well. See what happens next year.

Never said anything about my financial status. I said I complain about price at that’s all. I think prices are getting too high.

I think you made the best choice by deciding to buy a phone based on value. Good move.

There was a lot of talk on the forums about different ways to purchase the X, which carriers are offering the best payment methods, even talk of financing, loans, trying to sell off an older model, trading in wth a balance still due, etc.

Gave me the impression that phone companies are trying to make it easier for customers to afford more and more expensive phones they could not buy it outright. Or worse, trade in a phone when they still have a balance. There seems to be a lot of people making monthly payments on phones they never pay off. Or they choose to trade in based on some “deal” offered by the carriers and start the cycle again.

With these types of scenarios you never actually own the phone, so I have to ask, can we really afford it? What is going to happen next year when a newer or bigger model costs $1500? How many people will drop $1500 every year for a phone? Not many. It will be financed, which brings me to my original comment. Can we afford it?

It's just like other things like student loans and cars. Prices and costs rise because they make it easier to obtain a loan or financing. College costs are higher overall due to the student loans that are easily attainable. Cars cost more due to the auto loans being offered.

Wow the screen is so narrow and horrible yellow tint and as you turn slightly it gets white this is so poor I wanna swap for 8 plus this is disgusting

I seriously seriously doubt you even have an iPhone X.

You know what I don’t need to prove anything I know this forum has people that don’t like to hear something they don’t wanna hear it’s all good I’m just upset the screen isn’t for me

I think this could be due to some people in this forum being a bit allergic to trolls.

Having been an iPhone user since Day 1, the only versions I skipped were the 3GS (and 8). But I'll be sitting out this iteration of the iPhone X, hoping that my tiny, tiny voice (and missing $$) will encourage Apple to release a larger screened version.

I got my iPhone X this week as a new daily driver, bumping my current 7+ to my international phone stack along with a 6s+ and kicking a beleaguered 6+ to retirement. Just processed a return with Verizon and am keeping my 7+, 6s+, and 6+ lineup for now.

The iPhone X feels great in hand. Fit and finish are stellar and the device seems to recede from detection when in use.

But most importantly, the wireless performance on LTE was really substandard for me in rural areas. The iPhone X has (at least from an indicator display perspective and subjective data download speeds) much worse performance than my 7+. I don't have time or interest to trouble shoot.

The screen size was disappointing. The diagonal mode measurement is very misleading from a functional perspective. The iPhone X display feels tiny compared to a the + phones I am used to using for three years. The keyboard feels very cramped. If you need to use larger text for vision reasons the display feels even smaller. I miss landscape mode functionality. The iPhone X is nearly unusable if you ever need to do things like logging into remote servers using a terminal app.

I don't notice a big difference in the screen, aside from the deep, deep intensity of black. Getting old has some advantages.

In my opinion and with the size of my hands, the iPhone X is awkward and inconvenient to use. Swiping along the bottom is almost painful from a repetitive stress standpoint. The fact that the keyboard is bumped up on the screen is a testament to the difficulty of accessing the bottom of the screen.

FaceID is great and works very well but can also be awkward. This is especially true with Apple Pay and purchasing things from the App Store. The redundant double tap on the side button to confirm just feels awkward and is really a pain if your hands are full.

I'd welcome wireless charging but it will really only be of value to me once the multi-device Apple charging mat is available and who knows when that will ship.

The swiping along the bottom with a case is almost painful. With a case with some lay on the table you have to ‘dig’. A swiping down from the top is painful.

OLED does not have the same viewing angles as Apple's brilliant IPS panels. This is part of stepping down to a cheaper tech.

The cross width reach for one handed use, doesn't look any different than an iPhone 6-8...

OLED screen in the X is several times more expensive than IPS used in other iPhones. It’s also not a step down. I always liked Apple LCDs but X does have a better screen.

Also, while there is a slight color shift when viewed from an angle, IPS has a brightness shift (it gets darker). Just a different side-effect.

I am currently on my second iPhone X and seriously am considering exchanging it for an 8+. My first one had a bad speaker and was replaced. This one, which I'm finding out is a common problem with the X, gets noticeably warm after 15 minutes of normal use. Unacceptable. Also, I feel like the Stainless Steel bezel on the X is a deal breaker. It just scratches too easily. I've had the second X day three now with an Apple silicone case. I baby it and still managed to get a nice pitted spec on my Space Gray on the top band and the bottom has a few tiny specs already. Apparently the Space Gray has a painted / coated bezel. I don't even want to think of what it will look like in a few months. The Silver isn't any better and it too scratches easily and I think it's rather ridiculous to have to polish out the scratches on it. The Space Gray can not be polished out because of the coating and will show silver underneath. Another problem is the display. OLED is great but color shifting is annoying. Also the 18:9 aspect ration makes watching movies and video a bit drab with the black lines.

Most importantly, kind of like avoiding a car that has undergone a big redesign because of bugs, same too with the X. I have a feeling Apple is going to address these durability, aspect ratio, and heat issues in the sequel that is going to make everyone wish they waited before buying an X. Kind of like the 6 and 6S. Even though I love the smaller footprint of the X, I think I will will go back to the tried and true 8+ and hold off until the next "X" comes out.

So you’ve owned every iPhone and this is the first you’re returning... because of the screen to chassis edge...?

Has your nitpickyness increased over time? Every phone has had a make or break worse than this one.

I think you're over projecting based on what you think the space gray coating "Will look like in a few months." That would also be dependent on how somebody takes care of their iPhone as well. And that coating you are referring to, is the physical vapor deposition coating. It's a protective layer to prevent against minor scratches and corrosion. Similarly to what to used on firearms.

The Silver isn't any better and it too scratches easily and I think it's rather ridiculous to have to polish out the scratches on it.

Your Post seems rather ignorant regarding stainless steel Do you even own a stainless steel watch? If you did, then you understand how it takes a little effort to scratch the stainless Stainless steel scratches relatively easy, but it does have the advantage of where it can be polished out. You're Saying that's ridiculous, but that's the properties of stainless steel and how it is almost universally scratches across many different Products the same way.

If the X was in the 6/7/8 chassis it would be perfect for me. One of the big reasons for me is because my favorite case is the Magpul Field case. The 6/7/8 chassis is perfect in the hand. Once you put a similar case on the X is makes the X yuge. And since there’s a lip you can’t swipe at the bottom very easily on the X. That’s why you see of cases for the X with an opened bottom

I still have my 7 and although I thought for a while that FaceID felt slower, it isn't. In practical use, there is no difference between how fast you get to the home screen when you swipe up vs. tap the Home button.

The iPhone X feels great in hand. Fit and finish are stellar and the device seems to recede from detection when in use.

Your comment about receding from detection is really true and very well put. It's sort of spooky at times. I think the UI and UX could use some tweaks, but when it works it's really something else.

It has taken me three weeks to get to the point where ApplePay isn't a big embarrassment (to me, if not to Apple). I would have people bailing out of the line behind me because it took so long. I've now got it down, but the learning curve was real and even so there are a lot of readers where TouchID will beat FaceID every time.

I’ve been using the X for a month now. Tonight I put my SIM back in my 7+.

I’m not going to return or sell it. I’ll sit on it and wait for iOS 12 to see if it helps. As a long-time iPhone user skipping only the 3GS and 4S up to this point it just wasn’t clicking with me. It wasn’t as intuitive to use as a regular iPhone and the screen with the weird aspect ratio is definitely a major reason I don’t like it.

FaceID is also not ready for prime time. A friend offered to trade me a 8+ for it... I might also consider taking him up on it.

Actually I do. More than one. A brushed stainless would have been a better option.

The SG coating obvious doesn’t give a significant amount of “protection” since it already has blemishes after three days of being babied.

I am trying out the Silver now as it can apparently be polished out whereas the Sg cannot.

I have an iPhone SE, I've had practically the same design iPhone since 2012. As you guess my previous iPhone was the iPhone 5.

I ordered an iPhone x case and screen protector on Amazon but I just cancelled my order. I won't be buying the iPhone x as much as I want it. I'll let apple iron out the problems until next year.
