The current quad-core iMacs should be a huge step up from your G5 iMac. If you already had a Core iX-based iMac, it'd definitely be worth it to wait until Sandy Bridge, but in your case, I think you're safe to take the plunge now.

I have my current G5 for five years, and I want my next Mac to last five years as well. When the refresh happens, instead of getting the 27" i7 quad, I plan to buy the 21.5" base (hopefully with i3 550 or even i5) right away and an iPad 2nd gen next spring for the same money. Will the i3 550 able to give me five good years?

I think you get the high end 21,5" if you want it to last for 5 years.

Having it last 5 years depends on what you'd want it to do. I'd personally get the i7, but I do lots of multimedia stuff.

so who thinks this tuesday??? it's the same date as my hiring seminar for :apple:. that could turn out to be the sweetest day ever. here's hoping

I think the Mac Pro & iMac will be updated simultaneously. I hope this tuesday, i think tuesday in two/three weeks.

I really doubt it will be this tuesday, both Apple Store and Amazon.com in the US show normal stock inventories with shipping within 24 hours.

I'd love it were this tuesday, but think we're looking at mid or late august IMHO.

I don't think they will go a full month without shipping iMac, not the month before the new school year. I mean, students is a very important market for Macs.

My guess is that there will be a refresh not this week, but maybe the one after that.

Apple typically uses the student buying season to deplete old stock. Sad but true. Often new models come out AFTER school has started.

It's harder for them (ok, not THAT hard, but still...) to sell Macs than iPods. The Back to School is more like a way to sell macs while depleting the iPod stock. Since iPods always get refresh in september, they want to attenuate the effect of having a refresh coming. The exact reason why they won't tell when a Mac refresh is going.

Anyway, the Macbook has been recently refreshed.

Also, on a more "global" scale, I think that they use Mac refresh as a way of getting constant media attention. Every month there is something new coming in the Apple World. iPad, then MacBooks, then iPhone 4, then Mac Mini, then iMacs|Mac Pro, then iPods, then MacBook Pro ?

(Ok, its just personal speculation.

I guess I will also be waiting.
I have decided to become a Mac user for the first time.
I was going to get the iMac 27" quad core... but I guess I can wait a little longer.
But dang... I want it now!

The best time to buy a Imac is at the beginning and at the end of a life cycle. We are at the end of the current Gen. You can get a refurb for 1699.I highly doubt the new entry level 27 inch will match the Current top end quad core which is the i5 Quad at the 1700 price point. And no I know the i7 is the top end but it is a BTO option from the i5. The i5 is still the base top end.

I see the top end 27 getting the dual core i5. Not the Quad core. I will take Quad core over dual core any day of the week. Now the new top end model will probably see the i5 760, not much difference from the i5 750. And the most likely processor for the top end BTO option is the i7 870 which is not much different than the i7 860. The reason I say this is that the price points are almost the same for the i5 750 and the i5 760 and the i7 860 and i7 870.

That is a great deal. If you are in the hunt for a 27 inch I see no reason to wait. Regardless of the refresh. The time to buy is now for a 27 model. That is my opinion. If you really want the little speed bump and maybe USB 3.0 and the 5670 GPU as opposed to the 4850 and pay a extra $300-$400 go ahead. If you want to pay $2000.00 as opposed to $1700.00 for a speed bump in processor speed and a slightly better GPU you can and maybe USB 3.0 and pay $300.00 more you can. I don't feel it's worth it. You can put that $300.00 towards a new ipad or something or buy a iphone 4 with it. Or better yet get a refurb i7 quad for $150.00 less at $1850 as opposed to $2000.00 at what a new one would cost when the refresh happens. Not unless they go with a i7 as standard which at the price point it is currently set at is not likely to happen. And the i5-760 at 2.8Ghz is not as good as the current i7 860 at 2.8Ghz due to the use of the i7 having hyper threading.

I don't see Apple deviating from their current line up strategy too much with the imacs high end models.

The biggest changes will be with the 21.5 models. Not the 27 models.

an update to the visual aspects is what i'm looking forward to the most. a GPU upgrade looks almost certain which is sweet. if we get lucky their might even be a display size bump but somehow i doubt it.

I'll be buying the top end standard channel config as soon as possible. i wouldn't be surprised if the yellow tint issue still survived into this next gen of imac though.

No Magic mouse?

Wasn't magic enough for me. I need my forward/back buttons, and middle click. Neither of these things worked very well on the Magic Mouse.

Anyone know how much smaller things look on the 27" iMac with 2560x1440 res than the 24" iMac with 1900x1200?

I haven't really noticed it because OSX scales well in different resolutions. Obviously in Safari/Firefox you will notice it, but you can always have the browser zoomed in a little.

No it really doesn't (13" screens on the MB/MBP being the best example of how bad OS X resolution scaling is); OS X doesn't even have resolution independence.

When Leo Laporte buys, then the iMac will be refreshed

For those of you who follow Leo Laporte and Macbreak Weekly, you know when he buys his next iMac, the iMac will be refreshed the following day. So just let him know you want him to buy a current generation iMac right now, and you might just have it this week then.

yea.. my plan was that... I actually heard lots of rumor about imac stock running low.. but when I place my order, they said will ship within 24hr after payment received... u guys decide if u still want to wait...

if update comes up n' it's worth it.. I may sell it n' get a new one... one good thing about mac is their resell value is quite good...

Apple gives you a 14 day window where you can return your machine for full price and no restocking fee if they happen to update within that time frame.

I'm fairly new to apple products, so I was wondering if its safe to pull the trigger on this new imac when its released, or is it better to wait a few weeks to ensure there arnt any major bugs. I know waiting is best, but id prefer not to. Plus, I've heard a few people comment that apples second generation products are usually pretty flawless (im assuming this would be considered 2nd gen, since it had a major redesign last time around?)

my thoughts on technology: you simply can never be sure. Whatever you do, no matter the company, always be prepared that something is wrong. Its just the way of the world.

The sooner you accept this, and just shrug it up, the sooner you wont have to live in fear of it not being "perfect" despite being the thing we all want.

Higher resolution mean "smaller images" ONLY when the pixels are smaller. For example, if you take the 15' MacBook Pro Display.

Basic Res : 1440x900
Hi Res option : 1680x1050.

In this case, everything will be smaller. Not because there is more pixel, but because the pixels are smaller because the screen is exactly the same size but with more pixel (more pixel on the same screen size mean higher pixel density, they need to be smaller) The way we measure density is by DPI (Dot Per Inch).

The iMac 27' have a higher resolution, but not that much more DPI. It is around 100 DPI

The iMac 24' had around 94 DPI

So, everything should be around 5% smaller (since OS X, like mentionned before, is not resolution independent)

can't agree more... this is very true.. it's all about luck in the end of the day..
