No it really doesn't (13" screens on the MB/MBP being the best example of how bad OS X resolution scaling is); OS X doesn't even have resolution independence.

I stand corrected. Although if your using a 13" screen you really can't expect much.

my thoughts on technology: you simply can never be sure. Whatever you do, no matter the company, always be prepared that something is wrong. Its just the way of the world.

The sooner you accept this, and just shrug it up, the sooner you wont have to live in fear of it not being "perfect" despite being the thing we all want.

Believe me, I know first hand that technology isn't perfect. I purchased four of the current iMacs, and all of them had serious problems in the first two weeks of use (and I'm not talking about sensory issues either like yellow screens or loud fans. Two of them had HD failures, one had power source failure, and the fourth was damaged by fed ex, not apples fault). So I said screw it, and have been waiting for the refresh. So I guess when I'm asking about second generation problems, im referring to serious ones, not the minor stuff thats to be expected with any update.

I know its all speculation anyway, but like i said im new to apple, so I was just wondering if peoples experiences with second gen apple products have been positive.

hmm... sorry to hear that.. u seem to have a very bad luck on apple... you had purchased 4 imac.. u can't be new.. :D

To be honest, if I experienced the same thing, I would have switched to PC. Pick up the parts myself and assemble it myself... that should be the least problem it can cause... hehe...

But u made me worry on my new imac... hope everything's alright when it comes.. :D

Ha, yeah I guess one could call me an experienced buyer if you look at it that way.

Im surprised I didn't just switch back to pc too, but I absolutely love the iMac. That fact that im waiting for the refresh (without a computer) should tell you how much I enjoyed the user experience. I was just one in a minority of people who have had bad luck, so I wouldn't worry about your computer. You'll love it, its hands down the coolest computer Ive ever owned.

I'm fairly new to apple products, so I was wondering if its safe to pull the trigger on this new imac when its released, or is it better to wait a few weeks to ensure there arnt any major bugs. I know waiting is best, but id prefer not to. Plus, I've heard a few people comment that apples second generation products are usually pretty flawless (im assuming this would be considered 2nd gen, since it had a major redesign last time around?)
Providing there isn't a major redesign of what an iMac is you ought to be fine. If it's just a speedbump they will have concentrated on the bits of the previous revision design that caused service issues, meaning the new models ought to be a safer purchase than the current ones.

this is good news considering i bought my i5 yesterday, even better news that i live in Australia

I for one hope the update is insignificant, as I bought a 27" i7 a couple of weeks ago :( .

The chance you take when you purchase a computer towards the end of its production cycle. If you like your computer don't worry about it. But for many of us - myself included - we have been waiting months for Apple to finally give the iMac line an upgrade. Hopefully it will include a new GPU and a bump in processor speed.

I was one of the many that had planned to get an iMac this past winter but got very discouraged with the quality problems that Apple was having with the 27" iMac. We opted to nurse our aging PC along until the refresh to allow Apple to both refine the production process and get a performance boost packaged inside. If they update the iMac tomorrow...I will be one of the first to place an order!!!

DITTO same story here!

Hoping for the refresh tomorrow my PC is over 10 years old and on it's last legs. It needs replacing.

I suspect that there is quite a bit of pent up demand for the iMac due to many people who could wait - waited due to all the issues that plagued the iMac this past winter/spring. When the new iMac dropps I suspect Apple will have yet another hot seller on their hands.

As for your PC...10 years...very impressive. We could only hope our new iMac's would last that long. But I fear I am not that content...my current PC - a Gateway Pentium - is a little over six years old. I have tried to keep it current with updated peripherals and RAM - but it now just needs to be replaced.

Here's hoping we can order a new one in the next week! :apple:

I wonder about this, as the majority of the general public does not read MacRumors or AppleInsider or any other tech site to know about product refresh cycles and rumored tech announcements. Most average people just walk into an Apple store or Best Buy and pick up their new computer.

The same is with the iPhone. You'd be surprised how many people I talked to didn't know that Apple releases a new updated iPhone every year. I meet people that buy brand new iPhones in May and then get upset when 1 month later a new model comes out.

For those of us on here...that's a different story of course. :D

As we know, iLife 11' is rumored to come out at the 7th of August, which is a Saturday. I'll think we'll se an update the Tuesday that comes right after, at Augusth the 10th. What do you guys think? That they release the iMac and the Mac Pro, right after iLife 11'?

That would makes sense.

Maybe...but that is a long time for the stores to go on with little to no inventory. Apple can still launch the iMac either tomorrow or next Tuesday and just give customers the opportunity to get a free upgrade online for iLife 11. Since 3rd party sellers were told to keep inventories low last week - it seems that a refresh would happen within the next 8 days....no two more weeks.

Who knows though. Apple likes to keep themselves in the news. So releasing the iMac tomorrow and then being in the news again with iLife 11 a week and a half later would allow them another opportunity to talk about the new iMac just released.

Seems the signs are pointing to a refresh very soon. I guess tomorrow we will all be waiting for the Apple store to go down in the morning, signaling a refresh. I know two weeks ago we were all thinking a refresh was coming, but now seems like the signs are even greater. I'm hoping they refresh before the back to school free ipod program ends so I can get a brand new iMac and free ipod.

I ordered a 27" i7 on Thursday morning (10:00am) and it still has not shipped. Could that be a sign of some kind?? At the time, the apple store had it listed as "ships in 1-3 business days."

Refresh or not there are deals to be had right now on the top end 27 i5 model. I just picked one up for $1734.00!.

I will probably buy another one for my Office but the one I just got is better than any refresh entry level 27 that is bound to happen for $1700.00.

The one I got has no yellowing of any kind and no issues what so ever. It is a keeper. I will get a 21.5 refresh for my wife and keep this here 27 that is flawless.

Unless they come out with a 27 i5 Quad core with USB 3.0 for 1700.00 which I doubt.

This one can always go back.

My fiancee and I have decided to switch to Mac after years of PC servitude. We're waiting to see what the refresh brings before we make the leap. I'm hoping it'll be within a month.

It'd really surprise me if the refresh occurs this week as I'd think they'd try to sell down their exisiting stock for a while longer. But that doesn't mean I'm not hopeful!

Yes - tomorrow seems optimistic as many retail sites still report inventory. I expect it will be August 3rd to give the retailers time to draw down inventory a bit more. But hey, tomorrow would be fine with me!
