Hey,

Try to re-install Truecaller and see if you can enable CallKit. It usually works.

You don't need internet connection to be notified about spammers once you activated the CallKit.

Kamran @ Truecaller

Unfortunately that doesn't work. The last response I got from support was to disable Hiya and any other Callkit enabled apps in the iOS settings, remove all Callkit apps and reinstall Truecaller, but that's not working either.

I've given up trying to get Truecaller working, since every time I'm told to remove other apps and then I have to pay 20 cents to reinstall Hiya because it sends a SMS message.

Truecaller seems to not bother sending the SMS when logging in and just logs me in. I wish Hiya would do that.

Hi again,

Sorry to hear that Morac. Can you please share me the ticket number from Truecaller support and i'll follow up with you asap.

Best,
Kamran

Thanks for confirming that without access to contacts this app is severely crippled and can't be really considered a call blocking app.
Oops, I just hit the delete app button - that's the user call I made.

Here's one that I'm interested to try:

https://callblockapp.com

I haven't tried it, and the iOS 10 update hasn't gone live yet (although it's in review), but the developer on Twitter said that no contact access is required and it can still block calls. $3.99, right now (will later go to subscription, although apparently, if you buy it now, you won't be subject to it), so I might give it a go once the update is out. This looks more in line with what I'm looking for.

I have this one, specifically because it doesn't require access to contacts. While the updated app for 10.1 isn't out yet, I've had an interesting experience with the current version (which does work for some people). Prior to updating to iOS 10.1, I had installed this and it did nothing. After updating iOS, I reinstalled Callblock because I had been getting a daily spam call or two for about a month. Since that point...zero calls.

Could be coincidence. There's no way to tell, since unlike iBlacklist (jailbroken), none of these apps leave you a record of blocked calls. But it's interesting...

Just an FYI on the price tag; that $3.99 is for the next year according to their site. The subscription model will start sometime after that.

I'm using callblock. Seems to be ok. No need to share my contacts with them. The other two apps mentioned here requires access and sharing of contacts. I am not the type of person sharing these details to anyone or any company.

Hey everyone!

I will take the liberty to repost what i wrote earlier in this thread.

You can still use our (Truecallers) spam filter without allowing contact access. But our first two tabs 'Call' and 'Contacts' will not be functioning.
Regarding 'Contact access', we use the contact information to generate a personalised graph which helps us to provide you with more accurate search results. With that being said, please keep in mind that we never upload the contact information to our servers. That is against the Appstores guidelines. We only use the numbers to generate the graph.

Best,
Kamran @ Truecaller

Is Mr. Number also supposed to show up in the Caller Blocking and ID settings? It's not showing up for me.

At this point of the three apps I've tried (True Caller, Hiya and Mr. Number) only Hiya shows up. It shows up the moment I install it. I don't even have to run it.

I used TrueCaller all the time while on Android and it blocked spam calls without me having to manually do it for each number. Doesn't seem that way with iOS. Is this possible in iOS? Do I need to use another app?

From what you said earlier in the thread though, I understood that if a user does not provide contact access, calls will not be blocked. They will only be marked as spam and allowed to ring through. Is that correct?

The top spammers are in the "SPAM" contact which you can turn off inside Truecaller settings. Other spam numbers which is not in the "SPAM" contact cannot be blocked as the reject/block feature is iOS own where you "Block this caller" at the bottom inside the contact.

@IrishVixen , Since CallKit was released we don't need contact access it anymore to identify spammers. We do however have the "SPAM" contact which is the top spammers in your region and that require contact access. With that being said, please keep in mind that we never upload the contact information to our servers. That is against the Appstores guidelines. We only use the numbers to generate the graph.

@Ulenspiegel , please refer to our FAQ link for more details -> (https://truecaller.desk.com/custome...345371-is-my-phonebook-shared-to-other-users-)

That is because we don't create the contact "Identified as spam" anymore. The calls were blocked because they were placed in that contact and you blocked it through iOS own block function "Block this caller". All spam calls are in the CallKit now.

@IrishVixen , That applies in the prior version of Truecaller where we required to create the contact "Identified as spam" to block calls. And in order to create that contact we needed Contact access. Since CallKit was released we don't need contact access it anymore to identify spammers.

@Ulenspiegel , please refer to our FAQ link for more details -> (https://truecaller.desk.com/custome...345371-is-my-phonebook-shared-to-other-users-)

It is not an answer to my question. Let me be crystal clear: if something is searchable on your site and within the app whilst you have to be connected to the net, then there is a database. Where is this database situated?

I think the database here is in the Cloud. It's searchable online.

re truecaller....the version i have places a Spam entry with LOTS of numbers in my contacts. I don't see an update in the store. does the new version have a different name?

If in the new version access to contacts is not allowed, is my profile info still in truecallers database in the cloud?

A good read about Truecaller and the "Cloud". Just a short extract:
"...Well, it suffices that users allow for the app to access his/her contacts list as foreseen in the end user agreement, which might not have been read by many. Once this consent has been obtained, the information of the contacts book is uploaded to the Truecaller’s servers and made available to the rest of its subscribers. According to this crowd-sourced data system, you are able to identify unknown numbers..."
And so much for not having data on Truecaller servers: "Exclusive: Truecaller Databese hacked by Syrian Electronic Army".
