From Reddit...Google beta shows Google Maps in dashboard view, so everyone should have it available in the next week or so.

Interesting...well, when Google Maps updates again, I suppose I'll play around with it again, as I always do. I'm curious to know what will make the map change on the dashboard view. An option in the settings? Or simply whatever the last "opened" navigation app is? Probably the latter.

Wish they would do this for Waze. I generally am happy with Apple Maps, but I use Waze when I have to drive into or through NY City because of all the freaking cameras.

I'm back!
Anyway, what do you all think the rollout to Uk, Ireland, and canada will start, and what do you think will be the first country? UK, Ireland, or Canada?

You were gone? ;)

My guess is soft launch in the next 2-4 weeks for the UK/Ireland with wide availability coming around the same time as ios 14 launch...not because it is dependent on that, just because...

Canada soft launch in early November with wide release just before Christmas.

Japan has been released. I thought maybe it was in testing at first, but my post below this includes a screenshot of Look Around coverage, so Japan is officially out!

That is three pretty sizable areas! I wonder if this means we might see Look Around releases begin to speed up!

Wow...just did a hard restart and Japan is showing up for me as well...guess it is out....or could it be limited test and only some of us can see it?

Updating first page.

DuckDuckGo has the new Japan maps, as well. Looks like it's official!

Now, the question: Is this the future of new releases? Just BAM and it's out? We didn't hear of any limited testing, unless we don't have enough Apple Maps fans in Japan to notice or care.

Wonder if the upcoming Canada or Europe releases will similarly just appear out of nowhere.

I could see new releases possibly just popping up out of the blue. I think I'd be confident in saying that the US "testing to final release" method was just to see what they could do. Especially when you consider that many of those regions of the US...were the size equivalent of multiple, entire COUNTRIES, elsewhere around the world. Now that they (most likely) have all the kinks worked out, I imagine things will speed up.

Japan was first mentioned towards the end of last year, correct? If that's the case, we could see quite a bit in terms of releases this year! We'd have Canada, Ireland, and the UK (which they mentioned at the keynote), plus (hopefully) whatever they mentioned previously. And as I mentioned above, given the size of these three Look Around areas, I hope this is a sign of an acceleration. The data is all there (for the US for sure, and then I'm sure for quite a few areas outside of it), so it's just a matter of doing whatever the last steps are before pushing it out! In terms of the US, I can't imagine there would be much left to do in that aspect.

Apple is so slow to release Look Around which gives me no confidence in cycling coming anytime soon.

Notice how design of a pedestrian walkways is different and also stairs can be recognized.
Also the road tunnel under the park is marked differently than in the US (and Europe) used to be.

They are also showing traffic lights all the time, not just when routing. Interesting how the different data providers/country rules affect Maps. I like this one though.

Would be great to see “always on” small representations of lights/stop signs like this on Maps and then have them just be more pronounced like they are today in the US when routing.

Saw on Reddit...Not everywhere, but Japan also has Look Around for walking paths.

Just came here to mention that. But it’s not just walking paths...some sidewalks have Look Around footage, also!

I found a bunch in Kyoto and Tokyo. But the map doesn’t seem to indicate where sidewalks can be viewed. I just tried to move over onto some random sidewalks, and sometimes it worked. Coverage seems sparse, though.

So I guess the Apple Maps backpackers were in Japan, also.

Interestingly, those "path" designs for Japan's parks look very similar to the "pre-update" navigation mode park designs that we saw here in major U.S. cities before the new maps rolled out here.

But yeah, as has been mentioned, some countries dictate how certain features should look. Japan in particular likes to use certain colors for their highways, show the names of interchanges, and always show the locations of traffic lights on the maps.

Hmm...some people are suggesting that this is *not* a true “new maps” update. Apple announced the new maps were coming next for Canada and the U.K. Japan was only mentioned in that Look Around would be coming to some Japanese cities “soon”.

Also, while Japan does appear “green” in New Maps style when viewed from afar, if you zoom in, some areas which clearly *should* show varying levels of greenery aren’t.

The new map data is provided by a company called Increment P, which runs its own mapping website. Some believe this was merely a massive third party update using data from Increment P, and then Apple threw in some Look Around footage.

Perhaps a later “official” Apple update will come? Or, perhaps this is the way maps in Asian countries will be “updated”. Using a government-approved third party source for updated map data.

It does appear that all of Japan now has 3D building footprints, so I’m not sure what to make of all this.

Justin reveals that a lot of the new Japan data is coming from a third party source.

Yeah...why reinvent the wheel? Japan as a government was already providing so much data to fix the issue of their roads/GPS info.

I used to travel there for work (before iPhone) and my brother lived there for more than 10 years. You literally needed to know exactly where you were going, even in taxis, because it was so confusing and so many roads were not marked with signs.

I believe it is the latter...this is the update (for all the reasons you mentioned). But I hope I'm wrong, as it would be great to see a very consistent Apple Map solution across the entire globe IMHO.

I’ve been exploring more of Japan, and I’m noticing that there’s definitely a lack of varying green colors, and almost no beige to represent dirt fields or golf course sand traps.

This *could* be intentional, or perhaps how the Japanese government would prefer the land be represented. But some areas of the map look off compared to the satellite photos. Here are some examples:

Conclusion: inconclusive. Unless Apple officially comments, I’m not certain if this can be considered a true upgrade to “new maps” or not. Unless this will be the Japanese standard.
