It's weird how an iOS updated DOES seem to have an effect on the way Maps behaves. The park I take my dog to quite a bit has been a thorn in my side as Maps always seems to want to take me to the parking lot, but then direct me to walk to the middle of the park. I seem to correct this every few months (directions should just take you to the entrance/parking area).

They've fixed it at least a couple of times and then it will revert back to the marker in the center of the park.

Was magically fixed this morning again...hopeful they flipped a switch on some stuff (user submitted or algorithm based) to coincide with the release of iOS14 knowing that a new group of users may be on board trying out Maps again or for the first time.

Nope, still not working. Can you see them?
I'm not seeing the outline of the zone in London like it was shown during the WWDC keynote where they used Paris as an example. Could Apple be implementing it different for every city? After all different cities have chosen slightly different approaches to try and address this issue. It lets me know about toll roads as usual though. As far as I can say based on these reddit comments, it should at least work in some cities in Germany right now. Maybe the rollout isn't complete yet in London despite the city being mentioned on the iOS and iPadOS Feature Availability page?

NYC Bike directions went live today

Just a random question... in the UK I thought they used km, but it looks like your speed limits are in mph and the distance left on that trip is in miles. Do you use miles for driving related things, but the metric system for everything else? Are the speedometers on your cars mph?
Miles and mph in the UK, dont use km at all.
Traffic lights and speed cameras are now live in the UK!

Be interesting to see if this is outside the big cities as well. I really hope i get the new maps back soon, they taunted me by letting me have them for a while then taking them off me.

For driving we use imperial, so yes we use mph and the distances are miles.

For most other measurements, we use metric. So for example if I were measuring my garden I would measure in metres. We also use grams / kilograms etc when cooking (most older people still use imperial measurements though).

When measuring our own height, most people use feet and inches, but officially (e.g. medical records) then height is listed in cm.

Same for weight, most use stone and pounds but kg is used for medical records.

It is all quite confusing really!

Yes, they seem to be nationwide. They only show whilst navigating though, you can’t see them when you moving through the standard map.

Satellite imagery in my area (northern Illinois) was updated about a year ago (based on what the imagery looks like vs. new construction that has happened/been completed in the last year). As for 3D imagery, about half of my town previously had 3D. Some time within the last few days, it's grown to about 3/4 of it as the 3D seems to have expanded west.

The 3D imagery is actually more current than the satellite imagery, so that's interesting! Even the 3D imagery we had previously has been updated!

I've used iOS 14 CarPlay for the past two days, so I have some initial impressions.

The new colors (wallpapers) for CarPlay aren't really doing it for me. They seem a bit low-res for my 9.2 inch HD screen, so I went back to the default black and white.

Apple Maps seems to behave a *bit* snappier on CarPlay versus iOS 13, but still does bizarre things, like bouncing around when you first open the app, or the screen not sliding over immediately when "selecting" from an on-screen option.

I might be crazy, but I think the little images which illustrate your upcoming turn (and the shape of the intersecting roads) have been updated.

The GUI has been refreshed, which is nice to see, but it's more or less the same. When choosing from available routes, they now more clearly display if you need to pay tolls on that route or not. Unfortunately, in CarPlay, Apple Maps STILL does not tell you the mileage of the different routes you can choose from. I can't fathom how they continue to leave that out.

When driving in night mode, there is a new graphical glitch I'm constantly seeing on my car screen. It looks like little white dots or sparkles that randomly appear and vanish all over the map. Not certain if that's a CarPlay (night mode) specific glitch, or if it happens on the phone as well. It's visible enough to be annoying.

I got to experience the speed camera alert this morning. It shows up on the map as just a small icon displaying the speed limit for that road (unlike the UK, which includes the UK traffic guide's standardized logo for a speed camera). I guess Apple Maps is tracking your approximate speed (even though it doesn't display it). If you drive above the posted speed limit, the icon on the map turns red (similar to Waze), and Siri makes an additional announcement advising you to slow down. The icon on the map seemed to be roughly 400 to 800 feet prior to the actual camera. Maybe that's intentional to make sure you slow down before you reach the actual camera.

While Apple Maps on my phone now defaults to the 3D view when I open the app, Apple Maps on CarPlay continues to switch back to the 2D view after cancelling or completing a route. Which is annoying, because then I have to switch back to 3D again.

On iOS 13 CarPlay, there was a "glitch" where the POI icons and street name bubbles would sometimes display at an unusual size. Unplugging the phone and plugging it back in (to restart CarPlay) usually fixed that. On iOS 14, I haven't had to do that yet. It seems to be the correct size always.

The looking forward view while navigating (which I obsessed about in the transition from iOS 12 to iOS 13) is still straight behind the car arrow on local roads. On iOS 13, switching to the route overview and back would give the view a slight angle to the right. In iOS 14 CarPlay, that *slight* view adjustment after switching back from the overview is even less pronounced than before. It might be gone entirely, and I'm just seeing things.

The "car arrow" also looks redesigned. The stop signs also seem larger.

The ability to rate and add photos to venues is back again (running iOS 14 GM, 14.0 (18A373)) - the photos and ratings I gave back when the feature first launched in beta 6 show in Maps

("You Recommended - 3 Photos"), but don't actually appear against in the Place's card for me or anyone else.

More important than ever now that Yelp have given up on moderating venues outside the US and Canada (previously the quickest way to create a venue, add photos and have it appear in Apple Maps)

For a first time user (I grabbed my work iPhone using a different Apple ID), navigate to a place (eg, cafe), scroll down to 'Rate and Add Photos', and follow the prompts.

Maps have been acting really wacky ever since I updated. When you get into it, your home and work icons seem to be jumping in and out of each other. I got to think that is a bug, but it's surprising considering it's Apple's own app.

London has support for Cycling Directions in Maps according to the watchOS Feature Availability page. I have tried getting Cycling Directions between different places within London. It tells me that Cycling Directions isn’t supported in London when I try it. Does this mean that London will be the next city with support for Cycling Directions? I guess it would make sense if it rolled out around the time of the public release of Apple’s own map data for the UK and Ireland. If anyone is able to see the new map data for the UK and Ireland, could you then try getting Cycling Directions between places in London and see if it works?

Updated the first post with the Ratings and Photos feature.
Turns out it's listed on https://www.apple.com/au/ios/ios-14/features/ - but I'm not sure what other countries it's offered in?

It's definitely not in the US by the looks of things.

Has anyone submitted any place edits since the iOS 14 launch ('POI located in' 'places located in POI') and had them approved and appear on the map?

On a trip, Saturday 9/19, I set a destination in CarPlay got there and it ended as usual, then went to a second destination and it ended as usual, then was going home--didn't need Maps, so didn't set a destination. All of a sudden, it kept wanting me to restart the first destination, and if you closed the prompt, it popped right back up, over and over. Was also sending directions to my watch. Finally, just rebooted my iPhone and it stopped.

In the U.K. we use MPH, however pretty much every car comes with a speedometer dial that has MPH and KMH on it. Sometimes the KMH will be the bigger out dial, this is especially true for some commercial vehicles.
Also when you have a separate Speedomoter in a separate display, they will often be pre-set to KMH.
All our signs are in MPH though, except for the National speed limit sign, which gives no speed but instead a reference to 60 MPH OR 70 MPH.

Interestingly though all our bridge height signs are now duel signed between imperial and metric, with metric being the term most used in the heavy goods vehicle theory tests. Measurements for abnormal load dimensions are primarily in metric measurements.

About 15 years ago there was talk of moving our speed signs to KMH. I don’t think any government would be able to survive such a change though, not whilst the boomers are around in anyway.

The country as a whole though is a mess between imperial and metric measurements.

Quick question.
Do they only show as you approach the camera’s whilst driving in directions mode?
I have went in directions mode on my phone and moved further towards where I know camera’s are and not seen anything picked up.

Just tried navigating whilst sat at home on the sofa and the traffic lights still show up if I scroll along the route. The speed cameras show up as speed signs in the correct location but don’t seem to consistently have the camera icon next to them as they do when I approach them. Some show the icon and some don’t when not actually navigating.

Seems so, yes.

See above.

Interesting as when I have tried scrolling along I can’t see either traffic lights or speed cameras.

Just set up a random route to Edinburgh (over 400 miles away from where I currently am) and I can see traffic lights as you can see from the screenshot. The ‘30’ speed sign is a speed camera. Strangely when I am zooming the camera icon shows up but as soon as I let go of the screen, the camera icon disappears. This doesn’t happen when actually in the car approaching the camera.

Yeah, I’m not getting that. Maybe it’s not a full release yet.

This was one of the features I looked forward to the most and they, what a surprise, skipped over my region once again for this.
Pretty mind boggling that they always do slow rollouts for stuff like this which would greatly benefit the userbase if it were available for everyone.

Guess I‘ll have to Google Maps it for another 1-3 years, because Apple Maps is hell for finding and rating POI with the 500 gazillion crap POI apps it pulls data from, on a single street.
