Yeah - if your dell or HP breaks, they send a technician to your location - not drive 100 miles to the nearest Apple Store, so they can ship it out to another location to actually repair it.

It isn't out of my reach, but why on earth would I spend $6,000 for an 8 core, 32Gb ram box, when I can get a 16 core, 128 gb ram box for 20% less? OSX isn't that good anymore.

You are certainly right about that display.....
With the 8-core model, it looks like the closest Intel CPU is the Xeon Gold 6234, which retails for $2214.00 all by itself. That's a 1/3 the retail cost of the machine. Is there rest of it worth the remaining $4000? I guess we will see.

If you're comparing AMD to Intel, then AMD certainly has turned pricing on its head, but we all know that AMD was never, ever an option for Apple at this point. Not if they are truly just a few years from switching. Which, by the way, I don't think they are...ever...

Just as the average price of a pickup truck has skyrocketed as Ford, GMC and Toyota take them further upmarket to make more profit, Apple is doing the same thing. If this Mac Pro can actually do the things they say it can do, then they may have a winner regardless of cost.

The point about the technician is well taken and I wish Apple would pull their head out of their ass about service contracts for the MacBook Pro, iMac Pro and Mac Pro for anyone who purchases it. If I spend $20K on a workstation and it breaks, I need someone to get in a car and fix it, not tell me to schedule a Genius Bar appointment. I don't want a Genius poking around inside a $20K Mac Pro, no offense. Apple needs to step up their game.

Bad news about that default 8-core Xeon. Only Turbo to 4,0 GHz and it operates memory at 2666MHz, not 2933MHz like that others. :(:(

It's a shame they look like great machines, and exactly what I was waiting for. It's just too expensive at $6000 for a base model with only a 256 GB SSD. Why the hell did they go with THAT for the base? The iMac Pro has a 1 TB SSD for it's base model. At least go with a 512 GB. And I bet the SSDs are $600 - $700 to upgrade.

Oh well. I guess I'll be in PC land for a while.
Yeah, looks like a good upgrade, and what we should've gotten in 2013. But the price is outrageous, especially with that tiny SSD. 512 should be standard, they are expecting you to edit 8k with this and don't have the SSD space to store it

But what is there is a Super Duper Really Nifty Extra Coolio Reference Monitor?
That monitor is for those people who shop the really obscure pages of the Canon and Sony websites where a 4K HDR reference monitor for broadcast and $100 million movies costs $30K. That monitor is solid gold and actually as important if not more important than the intro of the Mac Pro.

Oh, I'm amazed by what the specs are- it's just so seriously ugly! The back of that display... OUCH!

I am afraid to hear the prices.
[doublepost=1559587475][/doublepost]Pricing wasn't as obscene as I expected. Must be the extra money they make from screwing MBP/MBA/Mini users.
I think it ugly too

28-core CPUs didn't exist in 2013 and they would have cost $30K each if they did.

No argument that 512GB should be standard, or even 1TB.

No one editing 8K is doing it on an internal SSD at any size. You are editing it from shared storage like a Jellyfish.

If you are trying to edit 8K on your internal only, you are doing it wrong. Or you don't know what you are doing. Take your pick.

Interestingly there is a new DriverKit added in 10.15. Could make Nvidia drivers more feasible.

"Use DriverKit to create device drivers that the user installs on their Mac. Drivers built with DriverKit run in user space, rather than as kernel extensions, for improved system security and stability."

Lol what about that 28-core CPU in 2013? That's gibberish! I meant the design is what we should've seen in 2013, instead of the trashcan.

I've got to say though, the display is pretty ugly. Even the base does not match the swooping design of the old Cinemas and the iMacs (Understandable considering the system used, but still doesn't look good) At least the front is fine.

I absolutely LOVE the design BUT! I can't see any front IO. I don't want to have to reach around the back every time I charge my iPhone or simply need to plug in a USB stick. Do I see IO on the top? It's hard to make out from the ad. ALSO, I want to add my 3.5" hard drives, can I do that?

I just find is amazing the iMac Pro has better specs for the SSD and Video and comparable for CPU and then comes with a screen for less

There are no clear analogues for the cores, clock speed and Turbo Boost speeds listed in the ARK. If Apple is using custom version of Intel Xeon 2nd Gen Scalable, then they are having Intel down clock the base clock and upclock the Turbo Boost.

I cannot believe these are going to be new Xeon W CPUs rumored for the Fall, but maybe they are. Bears paying attention to for the next few months. Not that I can afford one regardless.

In the notes, it is a preproduction chip, so they are subject to change.

It's on top along with the power button. Much better than reaching to the floor to plug something in. Love that they actually used a very common PC case feature instead of trying to think different.

There are 2 thunderbolt 3 ports on the top, but the USB 3 is only on the back. At least that's what I can see on the tech specs page.

Also, the tech specs page sucks. Why all these convoluted scrolling components? Just give me a page with all the info...

There's 2 TB3 ports on the top, no front IO though AFAICT

EDIT: retta283 beat me to it
