Is camera performance as bad as everybody says?
I'd like to buy the One, but I'm a bit worried. I like taking photos with my phone.

HTC are an absolute joke, I have just spoken to their Support Line in the UK.

4.2.2 Update is still NOT available here, my device is an unlocked handset and they have officially said the update is not released for the UK.

When the update is available, it could take a further 40 days for 4.2.2 to reach your handset as the updates are sent out in batches according to your IMEI number.

This is a joke

There was a story on Gizmodo UK yesterday that updates are starting to be rolled out.

Yes, I'd like 4.2.2 right now, but it's not a deal-breaker for me, so I'll just wait

Keep an eye on the 4.2.2 thread on XDA. As soon as you seen your CID being rolled out - it will happen quickly. And no it's not based on IMEI it's based on CID. If it was based on IMEI then I wouldn't be able to get it - despite changing my CID.

:)

Use CID Get on playstore if you don't know your CID.

What kind of photos are you taking. If your snapping for social media and your shots are generally snap shots of friends and family, and if you like snapping photos in bars / clubs when your out, then the camera will be fine and dandy.

If you are looking for landscape photo shooting and blowing them up to print, then yes you will be disappointed as 4mp just isn't enough in that scenario to do pictures the justice.

So yes, it depends on what you are shooting. There are many folks who are social snappers who think the camera is great, personally I shoot in daylight conditions and pretty much a lot of landscapes and seascapes. For me I find the camera a challenge for anything other than sharing on twitter / facebook / instagram and as my wallpaper on the phone. I wouldn't dream of printing them out at 10x8 for example.

Thank you.
Well, I like using my smartphone camera when I travel and taking lots of pictures.
I don't want to print them, just to store them in my Mac and watch them later.

I don't know, in fact, if I should buy the One or the S4.

Yes. Prepare your disappointments. All your base are belong to disappointments. Brace yourself, disappointment is coming.

Wait, what?

Niko91, let me translate couch...LOL.

In plain English...yes, the camera is bad comparatively speaking. In low light, you'll get a lot more detail without a flash than other phone cameras. If you like taking shots of people or animals (in other words, close up shots), the camera is pretty good. But if you like taking wide angle nature-type pictures, prepare to be disappointed. If you look at MRU's photos a few posts ago, they look fantastic...sharp and clean. Unfortunately, if you click on them and view the full sized images, you'll notice they're not as good as you originally thought. There are TONS of artifacts and noise, especially in the landscape photos (look at the hills in the background...see how soft the edges of the hills are?)

The fact of the matter is, less megapixels (even if it's "Ultrapixels") means less detail...period. HTC can spin it any way they want, but they can't change that fact.

While I loved the rest of the One, in the end the camera was a deal breaker for me. I sold mine last night and will be picking up a 32gb S4 in the near future. I take a lot of landscape shots and the camera on the One just isn't up to par. It's a shame, too, because if HTC had just stuck the camera from the One X or X+ in this phone, it could've been the perfect phone. But they took a risk and I think they lost because of it.

Exactly :) Looking at them small they look great, enlarge them to full size and the lack of pixels in the background just can't do landscapes justice :)

And yes whatever phone I get next..... It will have 13mp or more :)

If you don't mind touchwiz, and you want a great camera. The S4 is the way to go.

For me I weighed the pros and cons and it was a desperately hard choice whether to keep my HTC one or keep my Samsung S4.
In the end, I decided I could not live with Touchwiz, more than I couldn't live without a great camera. I had to compromise one way or the other.

If you don't mind Touchwiz, then the S4 is way to go for great photos.

Ok.. It's S4 for me, then.
Camera is too much important for me.

I hate TouchWiz, but.. I'll just change (visually) as much as possible.

It's the bits I couldn't change that drove me mad (dialler / contacts etc...)

But yeah if you can handle those - then go for it and enjoy :) :)

Depends on what you plan to use the camera for. If you fancy yourself a serious photographer than you may be dissappointed. However if you just take day-to-day snapshots for fun and post them to social media sites than you'll probably be happy with it. I had a One for a while and found it to work fine for pics. I'm not an avid photographer though. I can't tell the difference between "noise" and "softness" in pictures so it didn't bother me.

Call Reception?

Did anyone here move from an iPhone 4S to the One? I've been trying to decide between the One and the SGS4 and have been pretty evenly split but leaning towards the One. However, one thing that will be important is call reception! I live in an area that is edging out towards marginal and the signal strength as reported by my iPhone 4S ranges from -94 to -111 so I need a phone that will be in roughly the same ballpark for actual reception.

I live in a rural area and there are black spots, my iPhone 4/4S/4 dropped calls / lost connection far more than my HTC One in same area.

I can confirm this as well when using the elevators in my building. With my iphone 4, when I entered the elevator and took a short ride, half the time the call would drop. With my One, never once has the call dropped in this situation.

What makes it all the more remarkable is that for 3G with my carrier (which the iphone 4 uses), they use 850 mhz (lower frequencies better at penetrating structures) whereas for 4G/LTE (with my One) they use AWS (1700 mhz uplink, 2100 mhz downlink).

Great, thanks for the feedback! I still plan a trip to the store to compare numbers side by side but this is encouraging.

I've been debating about which phone to go with for a week or so and if the One had a better camera and fewer build quality/quality control issues it would have been a slam dunk. I'm still leaning towards the One though.

For those that have updated to 4.2.2, can you report on the quality of the sound coming from the speakers? I read that ppl were reporting that the sound is not as loud as before.

I can't tell. Could be the same, could be quieter. To me it sounds the same but without two phones side by side with different software its too hard to tell.

However, When one person says it seems quieter - there is a placebo effect and folks will often start thinking that there is - even if its not true. Its the same with folks who always report 'safari seems snappier' after every update.

RF performance is on par with the Nexus 4 and LG devices IMO. Its fine in high signal situations, but just downright struggles in low signal areas.

Out of my three devices, the One is, by far, the poorest, whereas my iPhone5 is the best. For example, my office is in the bottom floor of our building. Basically a black hole for phones. I have a microcell set up. But if I unplug it, my iPhone5 still maintains a weak (but usable) LTE signal. My GS4 bounces between the weak LTE and HSPA signals. My One gets unusable EDGE in the same spots. Doesn't even see the LTE. If I put the phone against the wall, it hooks into the weak HSPA signal

I don't understand how HTC can make such a beautiful device, but screw it up in so many fundamental ways. (Battery, camera, software, RF performance, etc)

I'm sorry ppl feel that way but I love my One lol. After rooting and I installing XPOSE Framework + GREENIFIED , my HTC ONE functions just like iOS in terms of hibernating apps that would run in the background while the device is asleep. My battery life is amazing after this essential mod!

There is an adage in life that many live by. "Consider the source".

Call Reception?
I have a Sprint HTC One. Classifying Spring reception in my area as marginal would be an optimistic classification.

The HTC One maintains better voice/sms reception than my previous phones (iPhone 4S and a Nexus S). In my office I can still make and receive calls/texts. The other phones wouldn't even find a signal.

I purchased the HTC One last Thursday. With the sole intention of turing it into a quasi-GPe One. After a hiccup with the keyboard because of the CID being different, I'm absolutely in love with this phone.
I've used a plethora of Androids, my favourites have been the Nexus devices, while not always fully featured, they have to me at least been the best blend of hardware and software. I really like the look of vanilla Android.
Now that I have what is essentially the best physical hardware with the best software, I couldn't be happier. This phone is the best one I've owned, nay, the best I've ever used. Apart from the camera, but who transfers their images to a computer for scrutiny anyway?

I know many of you will tell me that I'm missing a boatload of features from Sense. I've never used them and until they change the way it looks, I won't be using them for a while.

For a slightly longer gushing, check out my five-day review here

Out of interest, what google edition rom are you running. I see on XDA they just got the official bootloader and stock recovery meaning you can turn your phone into essentially an official google edition if you want to and I may be tempted when 4.3 ships. :)

I came by again to maybe notify any rooted HTC One owners out there that want to improve their audio on the phone. I recently installed a mod called PureXAudio that was created by ZeroInfinity on the XDA forums.

Check out this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2211163&page=43

I am blown away at the difference it made by simply flashing this mod to the DAC on the phone. The difference it made is night and day, and I'm only using 320kbps encoded mp3s. I will try it on some FLACs later tonight.

This PureXAudio sound mod, and the Greenify tweak has really improved the quality of my life away from Apple and it's ecosystem lol. Iphone 6 will really have to blow me away to lure me back into Jail.

My previous Jailbroken Iphone4s = Parole.

My Android = Freedom.

Life is good.

P.S. if you have any questions, please PM me for details on what I did.
