That's a notification light--will blink when you have an unread/unviewed notification (i.e. text, email, etc). You can turn it off if you don't want to use it in Settings.

This isn't the two LEDs located near the speaker grill. It's a much smaller green dot located inside the speaker grill. It turns read when the charger is plugged in, but my son's phone doesn't have this tiny light....

That is the notification LED. I'm not exactly sure what the two near the speaker grill are, but I bet they are the proximity and light sensors.

It could be a setting you have turned on that he does not. It would probably be something in settings called "battery LED indicator" or around those lines.

Didn't think this phone could be any snappier, but everything feels faster on 4.3.

Androidandme says the same thing: http://androidandme.com/2013/09/new...oid-4-3-update-for-htc-one-developer-edition/

Here's the new notification settings:

And here's the sweet sweet setting to turn off the dreaded on-screen menu bar. Swipe up for Google Now works amazingly well -- I didn't know Capacitive buttons could recognize gestures like that:

Yup, that little light inside the speaker grill is the notification light. You have the option to use it to blink when you have new notifications. Go to Settings > Display, gestured & buttons and you'll see the option about 6 rows down. Touch it and you'll be given the option to choose the notifications for which you want it to blink.

It'll be static when you're charging the phone, red when taking a charge and green when fully charged.

The hold for menu button option alone makes this an awesome update--everything else is gravy!

UPDATE: One aspect of this update that I don't like is that the NFC icon permanently resides in the top bar if that option is activated. Space is at a premium up there, don't need an icon for something rarely used, IMO.

BTW, just as a public service announcement to HTC One owners, don't forget you can enable "Show Magnifier" to get that magnifying glass when you edit text. It's under Accessibility in your Settings menu.

Yessum!

Think you're less inclined to switch to the Nexus 5 now?

I think it'll come down to storage size and pricing of the N5 to decide for me. And I guess, depending on what KitKat brings.

I'm back to Sense 5 on my One (European unlocked RUU) in the hopes that we'll see 4.3 soon.

I'm missing some of the camera features and can always convert back to Google Play Edition once KitKat lands.

Anyone know if this update brings about any camera improvements? I can't really tell from the few shots I've taken. It looks the same to me. The same mediocrity.

I hope Sprint rolls out this update ASAP. I cannot wait to get rid of that menu bar. Otherwise, I've always been quite happy with the HTC One, especially when I switched to the red one!

Thanks for the heads up about the magnifyer, though it seems to be hit or miss when it works. I tried using it when editing text in a post and it wouldn't activate but did work when i used it in the browser address bar. One element I miss from iOS.

And yes, it makes the user experience on the One even better but I'm still almost certainly going to also be getting a Nexus anyways. At this point the only thing that would stop me is if Google doesn't offer at least a 32GB option. Too much to entice me at this point-- larger display yet smaller form factor, better camera, on screen buttons, and of course stock KitKat. I'm also becoming spoiled by the wireless charging of the Nexus 7 and would love it on my phone.

I've been fighting the urge to try out the Moto X and definitely won't be able to suppress the urge any longer once the Nexus comes out. :D

Yeah, who am I kidding? Me too, most likely.

Right, but those are software keys. I wasn't aware Capacitive keys could register gestures, too.

Wait...in that case it would actually be theoretically possible to implement my ultimate wet dream - swipe right on the back button to go forward! E.g. when you've accidentally gone back.

:O

Actually that's genius! In theory you could work off a single home button-- touch for home, double tap for task drawer, long press for menu, swipe left for back, right for forward, and up for Google. I'd love a setup like this.

hey,

what made you dislike the s4 when you choose the one?

I never got the S4. I went from Nexus 4 > iPhone 5 > HTC One.

Double genius!

But I'd go one step further and eliminate a button altogether.

Gestures. Have you guys used Flipboard app on the smartphone? You swipe to go back and it works very reliably.

Don't know where Google Now would fit, though...

Another GREAT feature that 4.3 brings is expandable notifications with just one finger. It was always a mistake on Google's part to make it require two-fingers to expand -- I was very vocal about this back when it was first introduced in 4.1.

Now, it's great.

Expandable notifications in general is great.

It's faster b/c they bumped the usable RAM from 1.5 GB to 1.7 GB. You can check this by going to settings --> apps and see the total RAM #.
