MRU, how is the HTC stock keyboard? I am using SwiftKey trial on my S3 right now and wondering if I should go ahead and buy or not.

Buy it. It'll be the best app you've ever purchased. If you want to wait, there usually are deals on Swiftkey. I got it for 99 cents during a promo.

Even at full price, though, it's worth it.

Not so much for the prediction engine, but more so for the auto correction. As it continues to learn how you type (which is still customizable), the level of auto correction is just brilliant.

And yes, once in a while, when predictions work, it can finish whole sentences for you. Those times are only few and far between, but when it happens, it's magic.

Here's my game plan for the HTC One:

1) SwipePad - I love gestures and I have to credit the Jailbreak community and the makers of Zephyr for this. Zephyr is an absolutely brilliant, reliable, and simple to use app that lets you swipe upwards from anywhere and anytime to go back to the iOS home screen. Think of it as a reverse notification center. Instead of pulling down to reveal your notifications, you pull up to reveal your home screen. It's a thing of beauty. With SwipePad, the idea is the same. And though it's not as aesthetically slick as Zephyr, it does offer a lot more flexibility. Swiping instantaneously brings up a portal screen whereby you can set various apps and actions to portals of your choice. One of them being, of course, going back to the home screen. And you can have this gesture from left, right or bottom of the screen. Below is a video of a very brief demo.

Take a wild guess where I'll set mine up. Yes, from bottom center, right above the HTC logo. If this works out really well, I'll forgive HTC for moving the home button to the right. ;)

2) Power Toggles - Excellent app. And free. It allows you to customize your Notification pull down with a huge selection of different toggles (and shortcuts to apps). One of my favorite being "screen off" (forgot the actual name as I don't have an Android device currently). This action basically puts your device to sleep. And you can place this anywhere on your home screen, too. It works very reliably and the best thing is it can be customized so that it's very subtle and transparent. Here's an old screen cap. The icon above the DropBox icon. One tap, and the screen and device go to sleep. The point here is, I don't have to reach up to that far-away power/wake button to shut the device off. The only time I'll need it is to turn the device on, which is fair.

3) Apex or Nova launcher - I've only owned stock Android before, thus never needing either of these apps, which is the better one? I'd love opinions. But yes, if I find myself not digging Sense 5 (very high possibility), I will load up one of these guys as my default launcher. Also, I just know I won't be a fan of BlinkFeed. The fact that HTC forces it on you turns me off (Android is supposed to be about choice!). And the fact that I can very easily set up Flipboard (which I already have an account with) to do almost the exact same thing without being so obnoxiously obtrusive makes it an easy decision to ditch Sense 5.

4) SwiftKey - I actually don't mind giving the stock keyboard a shot, but ultimately, I foresee Swiftkey winning out. It's just hands down the best mobile keyboard bar none.

Anything else I should try?

Couch you should allow atleast the first 5 days to try "stock" sense :) ive never used or seen in person lol but i would do that first before installing things like launchers etc

Yeah, I'm going to give it a shot. Can't promise I'll last 5 days.

I'm actually now very excited about the One. For example, using SwipePad would make far less sense on the S4 because the physical home button would sort of get in the way of swiping up. Whereas with the One, the HTC logo will have no reaction. It'll be very much like the Blackberry Z10's center swipe up to go home gesture.

Boy, I hate Samsung's decision to stay with physical home button.

I think samsung will remove the physical button when they figure out how to remove some of that extra bezel down there, im positive the note 3 will not have a home button.

Hm, all these positive marks makes me want to go out and get the dev edition. :) one thing I hate about the galaxy is using it in landscape and accidentally pressing the back or menu button

You should check out sidebar, it is very slick and doubles as your multitasking bar along with shortcuts and toggles. You use a slide in from the right or left to activate it, though I sent an email to the developer and I was told they were definitely going to add a swipe up from the bottom gesture.

And thanks for power toggles, trying it out now.

Sidebar looks great. Do you know if it can be customized to do actions, though?

The reason Swipepad is a big deal is because you can set actions to the portals. Like, going Home, for example. Not just switching to other apps.

I'll give Sidebar a go when my One arrives. Looks very slick. Thanks.

Enjoy Power Toggles. It's great.

It has home and app drawer as a toggle as well as play, back, and forward. Plus your normal wife and bluetooth, etc.

This times 1,000 especially when you give it to non S3 users and they look at you like why the heck did you give this to me? Also this is the reason I hate the power/lock button being on the side. It just lines up perfect with where I set my hands and I hit it all the time.

Couch have you ever used the S3? I believe I saw that u liked your friends Note II, ever consider that?

Just bought swipe pad pro. Its a very good tool. Thanks for highlighting it. Definetly worth the € over the lite version.

:(

You know what's a little frustrating with the HTC One? When you google it (for accessories, etc.) HTC One X always comes up. This really highlights how stupid their naming scheme is.

In general, HTC just doesn't instill a lot of confidence... And what's worse is, I don't get the sense (get it?) that they've really learned from their mistakes. Why should I trust they'll release timely updates this time around when they historically haven't?

Yep if your looking for accessories on ebay, amazon etc.. Use HTC M7 and you'll get the right stuff.

I just got my Steinheil SGP screen protector. Vastly superior than the official branded version.

Does the screen protector work well with a case? I've had times where the protector peels due to the case. I was gonna get the double dip case. Steinheil/spigen is the way to go by far

Ya, I stopped Googling the HTC One b/c of that. So annoying and makes no sense at all. You'd think someone in the marketing department would raise their hand and say, um, I think we might have an issue when people are trying to query our phone...

And the fact that I am seeing Droid DNA commercials and rumors of a flagship Droid DNA 2 phone don't help that I'm not at all interested in this =D

Couldnt find one for the M7 (at least recently) but thanks for the info. I love a nice screen protector.

Wonder how a screen protector sits on the curved glass on the One X - or if the one M7 will be as (slightly) curved. My one X screen is just awsome with the slightly curved edges. Thats why I was wondering - about how a screen protect sits on that curved glass.

The one surface is flat so the screen protector is really easy to apply. In fact its just a square shape. The manufacturers of screen protectors got lucky :)

The difference the SGP screen protector makes is night and day to the HTC one. The HTC one looked like I'd dipped my fingers in a grease jar before touching the screen, the SGP has oleophobic coating thank goodness that keeps finger prints at bay so you spend less time cleaning it :)

Yep no trouble. Just a tip though. After you have applied the screen protector. Give it an hour before you put the case on. Just gives the screen protector enough time to rest and any residual air pockets to get themselves out and it will help prevent any bubbles where the protector may come into contact with the case :)

here's the SGP screen protector on the phone with the double dip case - as you can see perfect, no air-bubbles with the case in contact with the screen protector. :)

Thank you very much for sharing your experiences. May I ask if the screen protector has interfered at all with the sensitivity of the capacitive buttons? There's a few posts at XDA that suggest it might be an issue.

I had to cancel my order for the Glas.t because of it :(
