But if I do that, won't i have the opposite issue with Apple IMessage users not being able to send me a text on my cell phone number?

No, because when an iMessage is sent from a mobile phone it will default to a text message if the recipient is no longer in a position to receive the message as an iMessage.

I removed my phone number from my ipad and computer IMessage apps, but my wife's texts from her iphone 5 then do not get delivered to either. They were being delivered to my IPad and my Mac before I made this change.

Sadly you cannot have your cake and eat it too.

You have to decide where your priorities lie. You can either have text messages delivered to your mobile (but no iMessage delivered to your iPad and Mac), or you can have iMessages going to your Apple devices but no text to your HTC One.

I guess I would be OK with just getting text messages delivered to mobile, but that is not happening

Not sure why that is if you have removed your phone number from iMessage.

Perhaps you could try signing out of iMessage on each of your devices and then signing back in on each one in turn.
Thx for all of your help. I am thinking that there may be a 24 hour period for changes to take place. And/or that I may also have to turn my wife's iPhone off in orde to disassociate iMessage to texts so that my former iPhone is not recognized and texts are defaulted to iMessage.

No, I checked both my wife's and step-daughters phones. Both are sending to telephone number.
This happend when we switched from iPhones to GS4s as well. What I told all of my iPhone friends was to delete the existing message threads they have for me. Then start a new message that will start a new thread with the correct protocol.

Working now from both my wife's iPhone & stepdaughters iPhone. I had to disassociate my cell phone number in IMessage on both my Mac & my IPad. I set myself up as a new contact on my stepdaughters phone and after about 2 hours messaging works. With my wife's, I had to delete the last thread and start a new one. Solution is a combination of all steps. Thx to all for suggestions/help.

By the way, I am really liking the HTC One. Now to get into some mods of the skins

I got a look at the black HTC One today at BestBuy....OMG....I love that one.... I might have to get one!

So, I will hopefully be picking up a HTC One during this month or next. As I'm going to Turkey in June though, I'm thinking of getting a Canon Ixus 500 HS camera to bring with me, just in case the camera of the HTC One disappoints.

Am I right in believing that the Ixus 500 HS will be much better compared to the HTC One camera? Or iPhone 4S camera for that matter?

EDIT: Made my post in the wrong thread. Mods, feel free to remove.

i, too, saw the black htc one, and it is a very pretty device. makes me wonder, though, if it's prone to the chipping/peeling that the iphone 5 is.

Does the stock browser on the One have quick controls like the AOSP browser?

Oddly enough it is black under the paint unlike the silver the iphone has. A scratch really wouldn't show that much :)
