dream on about htc selling 30-40 million one's, that's not going to happen by a longshot.

they would be happy to sell 15-20% of the s4, thats the cold hard truth.

Uhhh, ok.....

HTC sold 7-8 million One X's last year.....the 2013 One will blow that out of the water.

how would they conceivably be able to ramp up production by the factor of 5? source the parts etc - demand estimation may have been too conservative but im sure they werent expecting to sell that amount so parts sourcing will be difficult - you cannot just get 5 times the amount of screens by calling samsung and ordering them for delivery in 2 weeks, no way thats conceivable.

i wish htc all the best and hope they sell a lot of ones (and not have to exchange a lot of phones because of fit and finish issues like has been the case at amazon apparently) but they wont come near those figures. i can guarantee that.

How many DIFFERENT HTC One variants were there last year?

The One X, One XL, One S......

How many HTC One variants are there THIS year?

The One.

Maybe 30 million is too high.....but I think they clear 10 million easily, and hope they sell enough to climb back into the race. Samsung needs an Android competitor pushing it to shore up that god-awful software......

Would a little optimization and cohesiveness kill them?

i just hope there wont be a one + this year. that would seriously tick me (and a lot of people) off.

IMO HTC could refine their handset line, and adopt more of the one-for-all that Apple has going with the iPhone.
HTC has countless series of phones, Apple has one, the iPhone.
HTC could just go up in steps from the HTC One, i.e. HTC Two?
Or am I being ignorant? :(

Why, it's called marketing. Everyone does it. iPhone 4>4S, 5<5S, the S3> S4 (which is really the SIII(S). HTC would be smart to release an updated/ enhanced HTC One just before the holidays. This is how technology evolves. Especially when it comes to Android, if you have a top of the line Android device for 6 months, that's considered a win for most of them.

of course, i dont dispute that. but all the phones you mentioned had a life span of about a year, not 6 months.

and i think a lot of people that shell out 600 € for a phone would be happy if it stayed relevant for at least a year, plus htc said the one is their only flagship for 2013. that of course could easily be spun so that the one + is the one with updated specs.

Cosmetically the S4 has a different shape and is smaller and thinner than it's predecessor, it has a larger screen display with gorilla glass 3 rather than 2 and the case is finished differently. It has an upgraded processor, twice the RAM, has a 13mp camera instead of 8 and a better front facing camera, has an addition of air gestures, (for those that like to use them) the screens PPI is greatly increased, it has more sensors, infra red port, has better wi/fi and bluetooth and has a bigger battery, amongst other things.

Why would you liken it to a S upgrade? What should they have done differently in your opinion to take it up from a S upgrade to a full number upgrade?

The S4 just seemed more of an evolutionary upgrade than a revolutionary update. It took what worked and built upon that foundation. I bet the next S5 will take much bigger steps in terms of design and Its OS.

It actually has the same amount of ram, but it is faster, the S3 had ddr2 while the S4 has ddr3, both 2gb though.

So camera update... The ultra pixel is shooting some good shots since.

As you know the camera update rolled out a while ago to some of us. Since then there has been a marked improvement in camera shots. Here just a few more from last 48 hours. :)

Stunning photography, to my eyes there aint much wrong with that camera, I particularly like the last photo where the water meets the sand one can see and almost feel the depth in the water. Stunning. :)

Thanks Dave :)

Yeah the water is very dark in that shot because the river flowing into the sea had a lot of peat in it after a heavy night of rain, hence the darker brown colour hitting the sand at the bottom. So there was a real contrast in colours from top to bottom which the camera managed to capture very well.

Certainly a few more mega pixels would be nice, but yeah - I'm quite happy with it now if truth be told. :)

Did they fix the terrible bloom in video recording yet? There is no way to lock exposure yet. Was this the fix? Is there an ability to tap hold or some rectangle you can manipulate to indicate to the camera that in this square you should not have bloom, and it should be what the exposure is calculated from. Apple's iphone allows you to tap and hold and a square tells you what is being used to calculated, and eventually after holding a while AE lock is indicated at the bottom of the screen (auto exposure lock).

Played with my friends today at the beach and its a love/hate thing. I love the front facing speakers, design/build quality, the way Sense interacts with your contacts showing everything you have going with them like emails, calls, messages...and I really like the display. I hated the camera, sealed battery, lack of SD card slot, lack of dedicated menu button, lack of toggles in the notification drop down and the display felt a bit too narrow. Maybe I am just too used to Samsung after having the S3 and now the Note 2. I think the One is a great device but for me, I will be getting the S4.

This is pretty much the exact same thing I went through

went from HTC One to Canadian S4 with unlocked bootloader. Now just waiting for the bootloader to be unlocked on the At&T version to custom Roms get going. Sooo much Samsung bloat

So the camera is receiving updates but I understand....

Understand if removable batteries and SD cards are your thing, you won't like the One.....

Lack of dedicated menu button will likely be taken care of as well.....

But come on.....Android users should know this by now....

Want toggles in the menu bar? Download Power toggles.....

And the display is the same aspect ratio as the GS4's - just 4.7" instead of 4.99".....

Anyways, don't mean to try and talk you into anything. Just wanted to point some things out that will likely be fixed and the toggles thing which is easily remedied with a simple app download.

For some reason it does feel awkward though. I felt that one when I had the one.

I guess coming from an iP5 and Nexus 4 (which feels wide to me, probably because the on screen buttons make the 4.7" display look like 4.5") its different.

I think its simply a mind-game...eyes playing tricks on you. But I understand - these flagships are all so close, its things like feel/build, sd cards and removable batteries that cause people to make certain choices.

Completely understand on that front.
