The same guy that predicted [correctly] the google edition s4 just predicted the same thing for the htc one. Imminent announcement within weeks. To be released this summer.

Anyone else a little peeved about this not happening sooner?

This is tempting. Best of both worlds.

The article is at android authority dot com:

http://androidauthority.com/htc-one-stock-android-edition-215254/

It talks about how HTC saw the attention the Google edition s4 was getting so they want to follow suit.

This is what pisses me off. They seriously couldn't figure it out on their own that a stock Android device would get positive attention? Seriously? This is why they aren't the android leader anymore and Samsung is. They follow instead of lead. Shocker. Stock Android device is desirable. Who would've ever thought!

If this all ends up being true, I'll be annoyed I spent money being an early adopter. HTC... Sigh.

If you really don't want Sense why not go here to this tutorial for installing cyanogenmod 10.1 on your One?

http://www.redmondpie.com/install-cyanogenmod-10.1-android-4.2.2-on-htc-one-tutorial/

The issue is updates. An HTC one controlled by Google is > an HTC one controlled by HTC, who has yet to update it to 4.2.2. They will, the rumors say, within weeks but 4.3 is around the corner too.

The bigger picture is HTC just doesn't feel suited to be the leader. It's sad they couldn't have figured this out until Samsung did it.

Having said that, I'm glad about the even bigger picture. More stock options = a good thing for Google. The talking points of fragmentation and lack of immediate updates are going to be over.

I'm annoyed as an early adopter but happy about the future of stock Android. Bring on stock options from Sony, LG, and Motorola.

Meh....I actually kinda like Sense. My plans to keep an iPhone, skinned Android and stock Android won't change, and Sense >>>>>>> TouchWiz IMO.

To me the GS4 GE would've been the choice between the two anyways as I would go for the skinned One.

Now if I were only planning on buying 1 phone, I'd be pissed. Then again, if the GE One is released, it won't be long before someone ports over stock to the One and all you guys with dev editions can run stock on your One anyways.

No need to be pissed off at HTC.....between the mess that was 2012 and all the exec mixups, its a wonder they've been able to push 5 million One's out the door.

I don't know how anyone could expect a company in HTC's position to be leading any kind of charge. Sammy is on top right now, they lead and others follow. At this point, HTC needs to continue to grow and develop (build off the One's successes) and follow when they need to (like with this GE).

Eventually, HTC can build itself back to being in the top 10 worldwide, then in the top 5 and maybe further. Then it can being to dictate terms and throw weight around.

And I completely agree with you on the stock issue, though I'm interested to see how this affects the Nexus program. It would seem that Google would move to selling OEM's stock options along with a Motorola phone and the Nexus program (at least for smartphones) would kinda go by the wayside, or be relegated to mid-tier status permanently.

Well said--agree with pretty much everything here.

I also find it curious why a number of people expect the next Nexus to be a flagship level device? The Nexus phones have never been top level phones--their allure has always been stock Android at a more affordable price than other unlocked devices. Considering there would be 2 flagship devices available with stock Android already on the market, I don't see why Google would change that recipe this fall.

And even though I would be a bit bummed personally, having also been an early adopter of the HTC One Dev edition, no downside to seeing another top end device with stock Android on the market.

New report at android central says that Google expects Samsung and HTC to update their phones faster if they make this "google edition" deal with them . I assume that means the developers edition will get updates sooner/faster. That's great if true.

What's also interesting is that the Google edition HTC one will lack HTC features like beats which is a big deal for the boom speakers. Ever try the speakers with beats off? They suck without it. Will also lack zoe etc.

Ditto for the s4 Google edition. No touch wiz features.

Also interesting is how Google and HTC will sort out the home button configuration and menu button. Will google make HTC turn on the "htc" logo as home button?

Nope because HTC are actually closer to Googles own suggested guidelines in this regard I believe.

Google want to do away with the menu button and therefore home and back should suffice, although they'll have to offer some facility (double press or long press for multi-tasking).

i wouldnt trade sense for vanilla android, as much as i like it, htc brought some features and polish to android you just dont get with stock.

now if only they could get rid of the virtual menu button it would be perfect.

I dislike HTC One, It's appearance is very ugly, performance is poor. I still like my iphone 4s.

You clearly haven't used one if you think performance is poor, but hey thanks for registering to tell us that, and for the other posts spamming your card printing.... It gives your argument & opinion so much credence........

i just picked up a t-mobile htc one, and i completely forgot t-mobile phones had wifi calling. the nexus 4 and the iphone 5 i've been using both don't have it, so it was refreshing being able to call and receive calls at home (fyi, no carrier works well where i live, so it isn't just a t-mobile issue at home). this might actually be a keeper.

Read that its possible the GE could actually offer a slightly tweaked version of Stock adding HTC propriety drivers. So beats for example may indeed be supported.

I went camping with my family and took some pictures along the trip.

I've been going back and forth on the one all weekend, but I think I'm going to keep it. the display, the design and feel of the hardware, the wifi calling (t-mobile), it just makes it much more compelling than the nexus 4 I have. I like it!

The clouds look a little over exposed but overall amazing pictures for a 4 MP.

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. Unfortunately, I don't want pictures that are good while saying " for a 4 mp". If HTC holds up, their next revision should be sweet (assuming they up the MPs). The current version is great, except for the camera (I know, same old complaint).

Thanks for this reply. Does sound (voice) get distorted at all when set at max volume during podcasts? Do you think definitively that podcasts sound better on the One versus the iPhone 5 at max volume?

I would say yes, at full volume a podcast will sound better on the One vs. the iPhone 5. Its not a huge difference but its noticeable.

So I just found someone to trade my XPERIA Z with and he gave me a HTC One! So now I have both flagships to compare to.

Any questions? ask away!

I'm considering making the switch from an iPhone 4S to the One or GS4. If you were to sacrifice your iPhone, and only use one of your phones, for the next 2 years without upgrading - which one would it have to be - the One or the GS4?

I really like the camera and 5" screen of the GS4 but don't think I can stand the plastic feel or UI. The One seems ideal, except for the camera.

Thanks! :)

If you love the iPhone, I would think the One would be the way to go. It honestly does feel in the hand like something Apple would've designed.

However, the S4 is probably going to be more "futureproof". So it's a hard call.

But a google edition S4 is not what made samsung into a household smartphone name, galaxy brand did.

HTC is not losing because they are not making stock devices. C'mon, are people really believing that stock makes or breaks companies?

I'm leaning towards the Samsung, but I just got the One, so i'll report back in a few days.
