But a google edition S4 is not what made samsung into a household smartphone name, galaxy brand did.

HTC is not losing because they are not making stock devices. C'mon, are people really believing that stock makes or breaks companies?

I think the whole stock Google thing is more attractive to the geekish amongst us including developers and those that upgrade the minute something comes out. Its a vocal minority for sure.

I'd love to see some granular analysis of who has purchased Nexus devices, because recently you had to make the decision to forgo LTE in order to have stock Google.

Also as more than one blog has pointed out recently, the device makers overlay of Android is getting better and better, so perhaps stock will be less of an issue. I like to see the choices though!

Outside of timely updates, I'd actually take Sense 5 HTC One over a Nexus edition all day any day.

To me Sense 5 > Nexus Android > Touchwiz.

HTC did a remarkable job. Its not perfect but its the best representation of Android right now as far as i'm concerned.

Stock Android is so dull and utilitarian that i fail to see the appeall of it. Then again i can understand why geeks fall over themselves for it.

That said it is still superior to Touchwiz in my opinion. Touchwiz is just a clunky bag of hurt.

Yuck.

how do you figure the s4 is more "futureproof" than the one? they're both so similary specced.

Updates. Simple as that.

Look, I've got no axe to grind here. I'm typing this on my One. But the S4 came with 4.2.2 while the One was already behind with 4.1.2. And HTC hasn't proven to be the most timely company when it comes to updates.

Then there's the camera, that while good for what it is, still can't compare to the camera on the S3 or Note 2, let alone the S4.

I love my One. But I'm also a realist.

Um. I never said that. Didn't even insinuate that.

It's simple. Updates.

Samsung released it with the newest version of Android and HTC didn't. With HTC's track record (One X getting JB almost a year later), I really don't have much hope. It tips in Sammy's favor some more with the upcoming Google Edition.

Samsung is an Android powerhouse. Even though they might crack out new phones monthly, that doesn't stop of them supporting their flagship devices. Even the Galaxy Note from 2011 just got a JB update.

Fair point indeed. Updates though may becoming less of an issue. One of Google's problems with Android has been the fact that at any one time, a small percentage of its users could actually update. We did not see key lime pie at I/O for instance, (That is telling) and Google itself is trying to push out more functionality improvements through the browser and Google Now.

..and nothing against Samsung at all they make great stuff and i have owned a lot of it but their allegiance to Google may only go so far. If they could fork it completely or even have their own OS, they would do it. They are making exploratory steps in that direction.

Its really interesting to see all of this at play.

This might be changing. My S4 practically forced me to upgrade. Like I couldn't stop the utility from downloading and installing the most recent update. Pretty crazy.

Tizen is coming.

i agree :D

Both the one and s4 are at jellybean, the latest major release.

I think minor updates are not going to make it everytime, hence probably why google is spacing out major ones. As long as I get a major one, I am happy. As long as apps work on it, I am happy.

I run ios 6.0 on my iPhone 5 and not once have I seen the need to update to ios 6.1.3. Sure someone will say here ios isn't changing much, but there are bug fixes and small things. However, I am happy on the version I am on. Not a big deal. I'll upgrade to ios 7 when it comes out.

However, I do agree that home button should be in center as this seems more natural to use.

While I get your point, and you're correct that both the One and S4 are on Jellybean, in this case all Jellybeans are not equal. There are a lot of differences between 4.1.2 and 4.2.2. One of the major ones is the support of lock screen widgets on 4.2.2.

I do like your theory that Google is spacing out major updates to try and get devices updated to newer OSs. That's a very good thought.

True but the question remains if lock screen widgets are THAT important, especially with widget locker in place.

So far after my stint with n4, I found them as useless as homescreen ones for me. On the other hand, the one has a notifications lock screen which mimics the iPhone which looks pretty great to me as I like that implementation better.

So in this case 4.1.2 device gets a one up over a 4.2.2 device, at least as far as I am concerned.

What I care most about, things like project butter, app compatibility etc, are available on either device any way.

I had the two for weeks now and I've complained & criticized the One more but I still prefer it over the S4 at the end.

Why?

Display
Build & Design
Boom Sound
Zoe

My complaints...very minor.

Album. I thought I figured it out but after transferring new track it changed all the covers to Daft Punk. My S4 every covers shows up.

Lack of Menu. I'm getting used to it but a PITA when you lose screen space.

4.1.2. I hope we get 4.2.2 soon.

GOOGLE EDITION CONFIRMED

Speaking to Walt Mossberg at D11 this morning, Google's Sundar Pichai offered glorious news for anyone who loves the HTC One but craves an untouched Android experience: he confirmed that there is indeed a stock Android 4.2.2 version of the flagship device One coming, and it will be fully unlocked for T-Mobile and AT&T at the solid price of $599. It'll go on sale in the Google Play Store on June 26th, the same date as its $649 counterpart, the Samsung Galaxy S 4 stock edition. The new version of the device -- which will be sold in the US initially -- will come SIM-unlocked, with an unlocked bootloader and 32GB storage. In terms of radios, it will offer quadband LTE (700/850/AWS/1900), triband HSPA+ (850/1900/2100) and the usual quadband GSM / EDGE.

Let's just hope HTC doesn't delay software updates to this variant.

Any word on storage size? I assume 16 gb.

I also read it'll be extremely limited supply. Like only 50,000 will be made to test the selling strength before more are made.

I wonder how Samsung feels about this too. The one is undoubtedly a more attractive package. And it's cheaper.

Anyway, I want 4.2.2 on my developer one ASAP too. C'mon htc.

And again, this is great news for android.

More likely 32GB as I don't believe HTC even produces a 16GB version of the One.

And while I wholeheartedly agree this is great for Android, I can honestly say I don't feel much remorse for having jumped on the Developers Edition early as I would miss Blinkfeed and many of the camera features. I have concerns about camera performance on a One running stock Android as I believe I read somewhere that there are significant optimizations in Sense that allow for best use of the 4 Ultrapixel shooter.

Alright, maybe a little bit of envy for the Google Edition One. ;)

Doh! Everyone got there before me ;)

So S4 & HTC One $649 / 16gb and $599 / 32gb with 'google edition' experience (no one other than the press/media is calling it the nexus experience) makes me wonder if the Motorola X too comes with stock android - and LG reportedly on record as saying they are not interested in making any more nexus devices - does this mean an end to the nexus devices and a swing to stock android being offered on all future flagships. Even the Xperia Z is getting official AOKP support.

Google is still committed to making nexus devices. Verge.com

This is amazing news.

Different price points. Different screen sizes. Plastic glass or metal. Physical or on screen or capacitive buttons. Whatever you want. All stock all updated by google.
