Here are some closer ups to prove I don't believe there's anything wrong with my lens. These photos are okay. The dish one demonstrates the overblown white/lights that I talked about before.

The camera just isn't that good.

The Lg takes great shots, the HTC one needs to be turned into macro for first shot but yeah second the dreaded too high contrast has kicked in. I find in that scenario turning on HDR helps get rid of the contrast issue when it raises its head....

Yeah, I neglected to include that I shot all the photos in "normal" mode. If I'd had more time, I would've gone more in depth and used the different modes to get a feel for how those compared. This was just an off the cuff, spontaneous test. :)

My next phone will have an amazing camera.

After owning the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, and now the HTC One, I'm sick of having a compromised camera experience. Ultrapixels are only ultra in hype. I really don't know what the fuss is about the low light pictures either. They're not even that great. And they're certainly not worth the tradeoffs of almost everything else camera-wise.

Carry around a PureView phone :)

You are not the social hipster htc's camera department wanted to target. We are in the same boat :(

Have you considered the S4? :D

S4 looks great, but I'm pretty committed to the One now. There's much to like about it. It's just the camera sucks and Ultrapixels are way more hype than they're worth. I really wish HTC gave us a regular good ol' 13 MP camera. If they did, they probably could've made the One thinner, too.

Whos running custom ROMs on their One? Which one is good?

I'm currently running Android Revolution HD 10.1 on mine. I was running CleanROM 2.5 before that, but the developer stopped supporting it after some Verizon S4 owners bought him a Verizon S4 so he'd dev for them.

Android Revolution HD is great. It's a stock-based ROM, but it's got a few bells and whistles. It's also an international-model ROM, but you can run it on your AT&T One just fine (I didn't realize this until the other day). You'll have to go into settings and change the system language from English (UK) to English (US), but other than that, it's a great, fast, clean ROM.

One of the nice things is it's based on 4.2.2, so you get the AOSP settings toggles and such.

Here's some I snagged at the mall of America today over my lunch break. No issues with my camera at all!

+1 on Android Revolution HD. Makes a big difference on the user experience.

I was playing around with my wife's HTC One and I think I'm pretty convinced now that I'll give Samsung another shot with the GS4. The button configuration is just looney and what is with the 3 row app drawer? Sense 5 just feels so different from my One X. Although the boom speakers are f'n brilliant.

I just think it's time I try something new and I'm really loving the bezel free display on S4. Probably go pick one up later on today.

You do realise you can change the app drawer to 4x5? Just select the grid size in the drop-down menu.

I disagree. I've seen more than enough good pictures to know that a lot depends on who is taking the pictures and what the expectations around the phone's camera is. Obviously this is not going to replace a real camera or even produce as good of shots as they S4 will but it will fit the bill for 90% of people who use a cell phone camera for taking and posting pics to social network sites. Pictures that aren't being blown up on huge screens look good. I've produced some great pictures myself w/ the HTC One so I know personally that it's not crap.

I agree with you. I constantly compare it to the other phone i carry, the iPhone 5 and am pleased generally. I agree that they aimed at the social market not the landscape photographer. The iPhone certainly does better in many situations but the included software options on the One plus the low light performance make it a great camera in my estimate.

Beautiful morning walking on beach. Took this snap. (obviously where the sky is burned out on the right is where I panned into the sun).

Add battery life issues and a ton of bugs in my HTC 8X alongside the most awkward power button and my last two HTC phones have really turned me off them which is sad....

I agree that the 8X power button is awful, and the sharp pointy edges digged into your hands. Battery life on the 8X is usually down to Skype. It kills the battery life very quickly.

The Ones button is a marvel in comparison the atrocity that befit the 8X. Battery life is very good too on the one, but yeah I think its clear the mistakes of 2012 are going to take a while to forgive, but at least they are rectifying them, and evidently is paying off with better than expected sales of the one.

PS.... why do newbies insist on inserting cut and paste emoticons ??? It's as if you are just cutting and pasting your entire post from one forum to the next ? Which comes across as a bit odd and suspicious ....
