My problem with all this talk of getting an alternative NUC is that I want to run OSX... and as far as I know, no machine outsides of Apple's offerings can easily be configured to offer this capability.

My other alternative is to get another MBP, but A) they're much too expensive and B) they have a monitor and keyboard that I can do without (I have my current MBP hooked up to a projector).

Same with iMac: I have zero interest in a device integrated with a monitor with the more powerful versions costing twice as much as mini.

Mac mini is perfect for my needs, but I don't want to purchase this late in its current life-cycle.

So yeah... what to do.

Ah, I see. I just had a feeling that it is going to be Kaprekar's Constant for the post count, which happens to work out to 247 for the page count. I thought you might be suspecting the same thing... :)

Anyway, if we can just harness some of the negative energy from the Iphone and Watch threads, I think we should be able to reach 247 pages in time for the October event. Does anyone have any suggestions for appropriately negative rumors about the Mini to stir up some trouble here?

I heard the new mini will be in the shape of Bono.

I've had the idea for some time about moving Mac OS off my 2012 2.3 Mac/Win mini and buying a 2014/2015/2016 mini just for Mac. The current one would be just fine for Windows 8 & 9.

My mini works really well as a dual boot machine but there are just not enough places to permanently plug everything I need for both OSs into. Also there is the little problem of Windows and an OWC ThunderBay 4 on a TB1 machine (so I've read). BTW the ThunderBay 4 is spectacular.

I almost said heck with it an ordered another 2012 i7 to be the new Mac machine (and I still might). Sounds like a great plan to everyone except Apple. In view of that fact I just spent most of my saved-mini-money on an iPhone 6, a product that Apple really does care about.

One of these days I'll move my Windows installation to a small HP, Dell or Acer. $775 to $950 buys a really sturdy, business-oriented, i7 in a very reasonable size.

I feel for you. For me I have 1 x 2011 and 2x 2012 mini's and a few pc's.

The mini has the right size and can do most all that I want.

I squeezed a big pc in my HT and it crushes the mini. Picture quality sound speed all far better then a 2012 quad. Frankly Apple has pushed me into the pc world because of the 23 month gap in mini's.

Now I like windows 7 more the mac osx. In most but now all tasks.

I been running Ubuntu 14.04 in Parallels on mine and it does everything I need to do in it.

If it wasn't for ICloud, IPhone and the IPad, I known that Linux would work just as well as OSX.

My phone is old and my IPad is an IPad 2 and I'm really starting to debate the Apple tax in my head right now.

I'm waiting for Windows 9 to come out so I can run it in the VM and see if I can deal with it.

I may switch back to a regular PC for my next purchase.

Similarly it is iTunes, iPhone and Time Machine that keep me in OSX. I want a native backup that is always current with the OS. Windows File BU is fairly limited and not anyway near as easy to use as Time Machine. TM is fantastic. Both of my Macs have two TM backups, one combined on the 3TB Time capsule, another on an independent external HDD.

While Windows phones have not sold very well they appear to be getting better. I like the tiles on WP as much as I hate them on Metro. Microsoft does not appear that it can be trusted as a phone provider like Apple can.

Unfortunately (for Microsoft) I want lots of Hi-Def music and a few movies on my phone. Moving now from a 32GB iPhone 5c to a 128GB iPhone 6 will be heavenly, no more trying to figure out what to keep and what to dump. No more deleting music on a trip because I took too many pictures or movies.

While Apple still makes some very nice computers (iMacs), they are moving away from the types of hardware that I like. Building my own PC like I did several times in the past seems to be getting more relevant again.

According to the last screenshots of win 9 that I saw, MS still does NOT GET IT and insists on making a hodgepodge of diverse interfaces. Lord, what is the matter with that company?

We have a lot to watch...after iphone 6 and apple watch the new 5K iMac, mac mini, apple tv, macbook and ipads will be introduces in October
The best product pipeline already started with the iPhone 6 and the watch..and believe me i say this for those who wasn't at the event...boy, those products are feeling good to use them. The combination of curved line in combination of that vivid display and with the slimmer design and with that weight it is the most beautiful and balanced product

Yeah In a way as an older but still tech savvy guy. My mobile needs are few. I am not watching a movie on a phone for a few reasons. If I am mobile I am driving a car. So watching a movie and driving a car do not seem like a good idea to me.

I won't go into the I like a movie on a 55 inch screen with 5.3 sound (yeah I have 3 subs) once you do that movies on a phone are meh. I do realize lot of people use a bus or subway so the iPhone features become more valuable. To me a mini in my home is small enough and could stay around same size .
But apple has always been down on ht.. As they never really built a pc with ht in mind.
Yeah the cube but it was not powerful and cost a ton of money.

Many Windows users are older and just email and surf. They could care less about virtual desktops. They just do not want TO HAVE TO RELEARN their tasks every time MS releases a new Windows!

I'm 63 so I guess I'm the exception. I usually occupy my mind by learning new things although sometimes I become frustrated and then I'll just drink another Beer. :)

I think this says what we needed to know from that link about Windows 9 virtual desktops...

"Virtual desktops are old hat for Linux and OS X, but they haven't been a native option for Windows power users."

... and after a brief diversion... back to the Mac.

As long as MS thinks it's Windows user base cares about virtual desktops that's all the reason they need shove Win 9 down their user's throats and to force you to upgrade.

If Parallels 10 supports it I'll take a look at it when it comes out next spring.

Nobody is forcing anyone in using a certain os or pc. They are private companies creating new products for new technologies. We are free to choose. My dad still uses xp and he is not even aware of others. New windows is great and i guess yosemite will be great too. We just need new hardware to enjoy those years to come.

I am 62 and taught all those now 70 and 80 year old's how to surf and do email back when they were 62 and I was 50 :) I am a Tech person down to my bones. They are not.

Agree with the beer (or whatever else floats your boat) part for sure :)
