I mean if they cost and perform the same why not get a Liquid Retina XDR display with ProMotion, keyboard, camera and portability on top?
Because some people want/need a desktop. Generally speaking, it's my view that if you're looking for a desktop replacement, that's what you're gonna get. If you want a laptop that's what you're going to get.

But if they contain the same chip and you get a free screen etc with the laptop, most people would buy that instead and use it docked all the time.

Looking forward to retiring my 2013 rMBP if everything pans out at the event today, and if the price is right. Has mostly been used as a desktop in clamshell mode; have replaced the battery twice so far, so it doesn't make sense to buy another laptop and repeat the cycle.

I already have dual U2718Q displays, so it will be interesting to see if any Apple display unveiled today is enough to justify upgrading.

Since everyone is playing the guessing game in regards to pricing & specs, I will just roll this out again...

Mac Studio will replace the high-end 2018 Intel Mac mini, bridging the gap between the (new smaller design) Mn-series Mac mini and the full tower Mac Pro...
Mac Studio will go from a base single M1 Pro SoC model all the way up to a dual M1 Max SoC model:
  • Base model - 8/14, 16/512, Gigabit Ethernet, $1499
  • Fully loaded model - 20/64, 128/8T, 10Gb Ethernet, $6999
Four TB4/USB4 (USB-C) ports & two USB 3.1 Gen2 (USB-A) ports on the single SoC models..
Gigabit Ethernet standard on single SoC models, upgrade to 10Gb Ethernet is US$100...
Six TB4/USB4 (USB-C) ports & four USB 3.1 Gen2 (USB-A) ports on the dual SoC models..
Dual Gigabit Ethernet standard on dual SoC models, upgrade to dual 10Gb Ethernet is US$200...

So, if I heard that right, the Ultra with 64gb RAM and 1tb disk is $4000? I actually would have expected it to be more expensive, the 64gb hex i7 2018 Mini was $3500 IIRC (although it had a 2tb disk).

Big, ugly silver thing though. :p

Was hoping for an updated Mini with a similar price point. No mention if the Intel Mini is discontinued but I imagine so. I'm not sure why anyone would buy a Mac Pro anymore if the benchmarks shown are true? Somewhat of a bummer you have to spend $2000 to get a computer that supports three displays. I'll probably wait to see what M2 Mac Mini has in store.

Ordered!

Cool event, but not for me. I don’t need that much power. M2 mini it is in Oct/Nov I guess. I don’t find the display very impressive for the price point either.
Same. Was hoping for something starting at $1,200-$1,400 vs. $2k because I need a bigger hard drive. I was on the store earlier and the intro price was $1,799 which was a little better but looks like it has been fixed...

The Intel mini is still on sale.

I returned my maxxed out M1 Max laptop 3 weeks after using it as wasn't quite as powerfull (for my needs) for the price and didn't really need a laptop with screen i wouldn't use. This new Studio sounds good though so just ordered the 20-core CPU/64-core version and the new monitor - shame its not bigger though as 32" would be much better.
Fingers crossed and delivery date say for this month too :)

The Intel Mac mini has not been discontinued.

My question is whether or not the Mac Studio replaces it and they're just keeping it around for legacy users, or if Apple will still release a high end Apple Silicon Mac mini to replace the high end Intel Mac mini.

I'm still hopeful for the latter, because of the big price gap between the entry level Mac mini and the entry level Mac Studio, and because M1 Pro doesn't exist anywhere in the headless Mac desktop lineup yet.
