I suspect that Apple has redesigned the Mini for Broadwell and are stuck waiting for chips. :)

yeah they made it tiny like the nuc.

And they keep pushing the tired old iMac as the goto apple.

Mistake in the long run,

but in the long rung we are all dead and the Sun is a cold dead star.

Although I suspect Apple is only thinking for the next 4 to 10 years.

Not the 10 billion I was talking about.

I have a strange feeling that Apple has a different view for the mini... OSX Yosemite and iOS 8 seem to be headed on an eventual collision course, what if the Apple TV and mini share the same fate?

people keep saying that but I just don't see how that would be priced. Why wouldn't people get a $50-100 roku or $35 chromecast. I can see the added functionality added to the mac mini, but i just don't see how anyone would by a hybrid between the two rather than each one separately or, more like, one or the other.

People keep suggesting this mini/apple tv hybrid and honestly, i don't see how that would possible work to the point that would be appealing to more than 1000 people.

new iMac = new mini?

I say YES because I think both iMac and Mac mini were supposed to get their next update with BROADWELL ... but as BROADWELL is delayed, APPLE is slipping in HASWELL updates for both in the meantime

There could be a problem with putting a Haswell chip in a redesigned Broadwell Mini mainly due to thermals especially if the Apple took the fan out or put a smaller fan in.

An Apple TV needs to be around $100 ideally lower. You can see a more fully functioned vs ATV cheap Mini with a form factor similar to the ATV but its going to cost $300+. You cannot in my view merge the Mini and ATV as it cannot be cheap enough.

solution: keep the old design! ;-)

most mini fans would prefer this anyway ... me too!!!

Definitely. The old case is fine. I say add 15-20mm to it for better cooling as well as room for a discrete GPU. A slightly taller case would allow room for more USB ports.

Yes.. One of the things I hope the new mini has is more USB 3 ports, update to thunderbolt 2 ports and updated wifi.

Apple is all about smaller except for the IPhone and maybe the iPad.

Yep, "Thinner, Lighter, Smaller" everything. I would not be shocked to see Apple make a Mac Nano with the fanless Broadwell Mobile CPUs that will come out in September/October. The current Mac Mini design is still dictated by the size and shape of a DVD drive (in case you've forgotten, the first run of the unibody Minis in mid 2010 came with internal Superdrives), but a Mac Nano would not. Everyone seems to want a black hockey puck that matches the Mac Pro, but I'm going to guess it will be a rectangle even smaller than an Intel NUC's 4.6 x 4.4 x 1.6 inches.

Quad core broadwell chips will not come out until early 2015. Mobile broadwell chips are being released during the "holiday season" but not the chips they would use in the mini.

You made me chuckle, reminded me of Monty Python and "What have the Romans ever done for us"

Apple are all about smaller
What about the iPhone ?
OK, Apple are all about smaller except the iPhone
What about the iPad ?
OK OK, Apple are all about smaller except the iPhone and the iPad

Life of Brian: What Have the Romans ..

Really hoping you are right about a Broadwell Mini, that would be worth waiting till 2015 for.

I've been saying this for almost a year.

They will probably still call it a MacMini, but there is a very good possibility of Apple making a Mini without fan, soldering down everything, limiting expandability, in order to make something very small and still inexpensive. Perhaps it will cost even less.

And it will be crunched down into a tiny footprint. Tall and thin seems to be the directive within Apple at this time.

At which point it ceases to be a computer and becomes an 'appliance', meaning that the cheapest headless Mac is $3000.

:(

If a new Mac Mini was small enough then I suppose they could use the same manufacturing for both, except that the Apple TV would continue to use ARM and fixed specs for affordability, while the Mac Mini (in brushed aluminium to differentiate it) has the better specs at a higher price, i.e - they merge the manufacturing, not the product as-such.

Personally though I don't see the Mac Mini going as small as an Apple TV just yet; it would only create problems, and it's not like the Mac Mini isn't already pretty small. I mean, IMO the Intel NUC size is too small; don't get me wrong, I'm loving the tiny motherboards and cool running chips they use, but Apple could easily use similar components in a slightly bigger case, which gives them the ability to run better specs with no, or modest, cooling, keep the power supply internal and keep a good level of connectivity. So while the Mac Mini could be a bit smaller, I don't think making it so much smaller really benefits it; I don't know many people who are in the market for the smallest ever desktop computer, they just want one that isn't too big, i.e - unless you're a gamer or need a workstation with tons of expansion cards and hard drives, then there really isn't much need for you to have a bulky tower anymore.

I do hope Apple will return some of the media capabilities that the Mac Mini has lost though; Front Row was annoying to lose, and considering the Mac Mini has an HDMI port as standard it really should be able to take the place of an Apple TV out of the box, as you're paying enough for it.

I don't believe the mini will get a discrete GPU.
It would increase both price and power consumption, which are key attributes of the line, specially when integrated GPUs get better and begin to be used in more expensive machines like the iMac.
